Good choice. I don't want a 686 with any shorter than a 4" barrel. 4" to 6" is ideal for me. My 5" 686+ meets nicely in the middle.

Guys, the OP is still around (he has a recent post in another subforum) but he bought his 4" 686 over 6 1/2 years ago. Hope he is still enjoying it.

I have a 4" -4 and a 6" no -. I'm kind of partial to 6" revolvers but I do think the 4" is the ideal weight balance wise for the 686. It's short enough to conceal carry if you want and just all around handy.
I like my 6" 686 but if I could do it reasonably I'd grind off most of that extra underlug. It doesn't need it on the 6". I have shot that 6" a whole bunch over the years and I do like it a lot. It's a no - I bought new.
I bought a 4" 1st, before the 6" but traded that one off after it saw too much salt water when I was on the marine unit. I replaced it with a used -4 last year. I didn't realize how much I'd missed the 4" until I got one again.
I guess it's obvious which one I'd have bought first.
OMG, I didn't notice that this was a zombie thread! I wouldn't have bothered, but hey, I spent the time typing it and now you wasted your time reading it. I know the software doesn't support it but it would be nice if when a zombie thread is resurrected a zombie head would appear next to it as a warning. Yeah, I could note the original post date but....

I generally prefer 6" or longer barrels in "full size" revolvers, but picked 4" for my 686 as it is the most versatile length.

I sold my no dash 4" and my -6+ 5" and kept my 6" no dash.

Not 686, but lot of .38 & .357 ammo with 586-no dash
With .38 it's like .22 lr
I have had 586 4" and 686 6", now I have 586 8 3/8" and 686 4". I think 4" is the best for L-frame (range use)
