Here's one of the 478 2" RB K frame NY-1 Model 64's from 1993 that was shipped to and sold from the NYPD Equipment section at 1 Police Plaza. The S&W 5946 is pre MIM and a amazing example of the quality and craftsmanship S&W produced, This example has SW0059 laser etched on the dust shroud, This was done by the S&W Factory and is lettered by Roy Jinks as one of the original testing and evaluation guns that was shipped to the NYPD Rodmans Neck Outdoor Range January 1993, The NYPD Transitioned over to Semi-Automatic Pistols in August of 1993. It is wearing a custom textured set of Factory straight back grips and a factory lanyard loop attachment.

The trigger pull is heavy due the extra power mainspring that was installed as per spec in the NY-1 60's, I changed mine back to a standard mainspring and it makes a huge difference. Does this happen to be the one that was being sold with no grips on sidegig. P.S. You still need a 640-2 on your to find list to round out your collection.

Yes this is the no grips gun, same seller had the 3" Ruger I keep an eye on things over there (I thought I had a hidden honey hole ). However not being a MOS or even live in NY it adds to the challenge. All part of the fun I suppose. I looked for this gun for years.

I forgot about that 640-2 one more for the list. Slowly but surely filling in the holes.

If I can fill the collection it will be unique I think

One thing on the Ruger Sixes, they have the star stamp and the speed has what look like a check mark stamped next to the star. I havent seen mention of that before, any insight?

The only NYPD guns I'd collect would have to be .357.

With saying that, your collection is impressive.

I don't think any .357 was NYPD authorized? I understand Big Boku should know the answer for certain.

Wheel can you post a picture of the inspection mark for me. I will keep an eye out for your lists of wants, Like with the last 3 NY-1 model 60's I came across, I tend to pass on them or send the info to guys looking nowadays as I have owned everyone several times over in the last 20 years.

I own a model 5946 and a model 640 carried both on patrol in the NYPD.
Both guns have performed flawless. I carry the 640 mostly and some of my newer stuff.

I understand the star to be a NYPD acceptance mark?

The check mark I havent seen any reference to before.

I just found my receipt for the 2" S&W chief I purchased in 1967 from the NYPD equipment bureau. Ready for this, it cost $43. I purchased my S&W Model 10 heavy barrel service revolver in 1966 & I believe it was the same price. Still looking for that receipt.

Mike, I have never seen one because of the 5 variations of NY-1 guns that was not one offered. The model 60 NY-1 of course and then 4 variations of the NY-1 Model 64's. The most common is the 4" square butt (approx 2,469) followed by the 4" round butt (approx 932) then the 3" round butt (approx 612) and the rarest being the 2" round butt (approx 478).

Yes, the star is the NYPD inspection mark, the check is most likely a Ruger inspection mark for factory work.

Thanks for the info Louie, now I can stop looking for the 3 inch SB. A guy from Mass, "RKelly?" had a RB 4inch 64, I should have grabbed it. He also was recently selling a 640-2, as you were awhile back, should have jumped on either of those too.

As you probably know, that extra-power mainspring is closely related to serious functional problems, so if you intend to shoot that thing, or even dry-fire it, it would probably be good to swap it out sooner than later. Bob Vivas had a fairly complete discussion of the issues here some years back.

I've got a GPNY that shoots like a laser and I would love to add a NYPD 64 4". I would also love to find a NYPD Service Six.

The NYPD never authorized any .357's.

To complete your collection you would have to start with the first issued wheelgun of the NYPD, the 1862 Colt Pocket Police .36 and work upward

Rkelly is a great guy and a Boston Brother, I actually grabbed a 4" RB for our favorite FFL holders best friend a few months back, had box and everything. I will keep my eyes open for you Mike.

This is correct, the extra power mainspring made the size of the hammer stud (hammer pin) hole in the sideplate more critical. If you notice on the OPs picture the silhouette inspection stamping is on the yoke cut out which means it passed the inspection with a go no go gauge to ensure the side plate hammer stud hole was within specification. I posted pictures of the go no go gauge and the actual NY-1 and Silhouette dies used to stamp the guns at the range awhile back. Ultimately all the guns were removed from service.

Questions for the NY-1 Crowd and Collectors of NYPD Guns Generally . . .

I think I saw that one in his shop. He also ad one on GB, but don't remember if it were SB or RB. Btw, I was there last week, the pickin's are slim, Richie can't get anything.

Yes he had another one he had someone come in the store to sell and it was a round butt, yes pickings are slim, I did find myself a very nice 3rd series Colt Detective Special with the super rare 3" barrel so I'm not complaining lol.

I have a 64-4 marked NY-4 I also have a S&W. 3 inch blue, with the front of trigger guard cut off. Was told that it was also a NYPD gun.

Hi Marvin, is NY-4 a typo? as in did you mean NY-1 Because we never stamped our revolvers NY-4..............Post a pic if you can.

That is a later NY-1 which is laser engraved at the factory as opposed to stamped with the die I posted the link for and much more asthetically pleasing to the eye IMHO. That is what is called a Fitz special which was designed by John Henry Fitzgerald who was a NYPD officer and worked for Colt as well. Google his name and you will find a lot of information. I have seen one factory 3" Colt Agent. I like the so much that I have converted three of the 2" barrel versions to 3" using Detective Special barrels. Two of them are with close friends, the third one is still mine.

Anyone have any info about this little gem? Model 36-2 DAO bead blast blue finish factory combat grips,Spec. Order code 101520.I have read that it was ordered by NYPD for off duty detectives.This one was made in April of 1989 and is NIB.

Here are my NY-1 marked guns,A 4" SB and a 3" RB.The 2" model 64 is not a NY-1 gun.

Gorgeous gun, but they were never made for the NYPD, The 1987 academy class was the first group of officers to fall under the new stainless DAO revolver specifications. After the NY-1 Model 60s were pulled from service the S&W 640 was the stainless J frame DAO revolver that was authorized to replace it.

I sold a tapered barrel 3" model 36 to a guy recently who owned one of those matte-finish 36-2's. Nice gun. I don't care for the DAO feature on it or on the NYPD specials, but I do like a bobbed hammer & a matte finish. Although I prefer pinned barrels, I wouldn't mind one of those DAO matte-blue 37-2's that S&W produced in later years-- I believe one batch in the 1990's & another around 2005 or so.

I own a mix of both and mainly carry a 649, Personally DAO has never been a issue or a concern for me as it is the way the gun will be utilized in a combat situation..........I had a 37-2 and loved the gun, they were no lock/no mim beauties...............

They were by mistake in 1979. The first class after the fiscal crisis was in 1979, which is the first time the Ruger Police Service 6 was authorized. Less than 20 recruits I believe chose the Ruger. Well, unlike S&W who uses different sized cylinders in the Model 10 and 13 Ruger uses the same cylinder and just reems the cylinder deeper to accommodate the 357 over the 38.

The job received Police Service Six revolvers marked 38 special, but with 357 cylinders. Once discovered (by a dept. gunsmith) they were recalled and the cylinders were replaced with 38 special cylinders.

I came on with the Model 10, but acquired a Ruger from the equipment section as a spare after hearing how easy it was to convert. Also bought the Speed Six off duty, great guns. I wasn't assigned to the range, but several good friends were...you see where this is going? All my Rugers (eventually I bought the stainless versions of the service and off duty Rugers also) were converted to 357.

The original Blue one has one of the exchanged 357 cylinders and the others had the cylinders reemed to accommodate the 357. I have a full set.

This actually happened with the Class of September, 1980 as well. Several of my classmates had to return their revolvers within a week of receiving them after an armorer at Rodman's neck realized what had happened.

It's a long story, but here's my NY-1 revolver. Never even cracked open the cylinder, she's been sitting in her mahogany box since the late 1980s.

It took me eight or so years (of scheming mostly) to get the NYPD to go over to stainless revolvers (told you it was a long story). By the time I managed to do so we were about to switch over to semi-autos!

My claim to fame, as it is, is the change from ferrous metal to stainless and the making of J-frame handguns with full width front sights (which is how they've been made ever since I required it on the NYPD handguns). Hated those 1/10" wide sights on earlier J-frames!

The only NY-1 S&W I have is a 4 inch round butt Model 64, AWT29xx. I bought it NIB in 1988 from Harrison Carrol. He said that it was one of "about 60 NYPD contract over-run guns sold." I haven't shot it. It may need a new home with an NYPD collector.

One more little tidbit about the four guns with "0001" ending numbers. I was told the guys at S&W pulled four J-frames off the line, ground off the serial numbers that were already on them then renumbered them. Problem was, the grips (standard S&W J-frame grips) were overly long. So they had to make up custom grips for the four guns as well!

True, I love anything NYPD, especially revolver stuff. First hand accounts are always the best.

Always thought the 'no-choice' DAO revolvers for NY was sorta strange.

My first 10 years in LE were with revolvers (Colt Trooper MKIII and M66), but my department trusted us to understand that DA was the primary method of use, but the guns were capable of SA.
