Maybe I posted the last incorrectly. but after working on older Smiths, I took a 686 apart yesterday and the hand spring fell out. I'd like to know what holds it in place -- on my older Smiths, the spring is held in place with a pin. There are no pins in the 686 trigger for the spring and no holes for pins. There is a hole in the trigger that one end of the handspring goes into. I can't tell you more as I just have to do it by experimentation until it slips in. Perhaps some with more experience can describe it better. Like you I mostly work on the pinned variety.

I had the same problem. Luckily I found this video on how to do it. I didn't use a shoelace, I just used an allen wrench.
