Default S&W 640 Pro Series - The Ultimate Snubnose

I am really impressed with the 640 Pro Series J-frame .357 Magnum snub nose! All stainless steel with the 2 1/8" fluted barrel and covered ejector rod. The little angled area under the muzzle with the lightening flutes just gives this little double action a "one of kind" look.

The ejector rod is long enough to really kick out the empty cases too.

I think the ultimate snubnose has to be chambered for the .357 Magnum and of course it shoots .38 Specials as well. Very unique about this revolver is that the rear of the cylinder is cut to accept full moon clips. In the hard plastic case are three 5-shot full moon clips so you can drop all five rounds in at the same time, no speedloader needed to toss away after a reload. Pretty slick! The gun still loads just as well with speedloaders (I have two Safariland speedloaders and two metal Blackhawk belt holders for them) or with speed strips (I have two of those as well).

The S&W logo rubber grip is perfectly contoured for a full grip and firing hot .357s is no problem with this awesome grip. It's a little big for pocket carry, but it's perfect in the Italian leather Blackhawk hip holster that keeps it up high and tight. This holster has an elastic band at the front to keep the gun super secure, while still allowing a very fast draw. A Blackhawk "inside the pants" rough out leather holster works great too and this one features the belt clips so a shirt can be tucked in over the gun.

I also have a pair of Crimson Trace lasergrips for it. They're smaller than the factory grip and they cushion recoil just as well as the factory grip.

Of course, the big thing about this Pro Series (as laser etched in script on the right side of the frame) is the Trijicon night sights! Big, bold, no-snag night sights on a J-frame! They're just what the little snubbies have always needed! The sights are fantastic! They're so easy to see night or day!

S&W designed this revolver as a fighting gun, so the double action trigger is smooth with that classic S&W feel. It's not a super tuned, too light trigger. Instead, it is designed to go off 100% guaranteed, no matter what kind of primers you've got in your cartridges.

And there's that one last item that truly makes this ultimate modern day snubby so desirable...NO INTERNAL LOCK! There's no ugly keyhole above the angled cylinder release latch!

S&W sure did this Model 640 right!

Thumbs up

Nice review mm6mm6,
This is the one that sold me! It’s my first S&W. Sorry, also my first post here. About 5 years ago for my daughter’s 21st birthday I told her to pick a gun for her birthday present. I gently nudged her towards any US or European auto, but I gave her enough material to make her own choice. She chose an Airweight 38 J frame – I loved IT ! Since then I wanted something similar but in a 357. It took all this time until the stars lined up and I stumbled into the local bricks and mortar place and it was there. I wasn’t even aware of this model. I think it was the fluted barrel that did me in. The full moon clips with a countersunk cylinder .. seriously? why did it take a hundred years to come up with that? I must have it. And “the lock” was missing .. really? I don’t need to keep looking for an old gun! I need this one!
After 80 rounds of a variety of ammo my hand did indeed hurt. Ok, I’ll admit, it hurt more the next day and even more the third day. The backbone is a bit pointed. Yes, rubber but pointed rubber still hurts. I trimmed it with a razor blade and followed up with different grades of sandpaper until it looked good again. I haven’t shot it since, still waiting for my hand to heal.
Most of what I had shot low and left. The muzzle crown looks to be off center a little. One load was a lot better than the rest but my targets ended up in the trash so I have to start over again.

I should have one coming straight from S&W as a replacement for the 632 Carry Comp I had. Hope it will be a flawless gun, but my streak with new revolvers has been BAD!
Two out of three S&W's needed warranty work, and two out of three Rugers. My older used ones have been fine, though.

A gun store here in Roseville CA has a new 640 on the shelf. I looked at it the other day.

It has the cuts for the moon clips, but has regular groove and front ramp sights.

It also has the internal lock.

Seems like a great snubby.

I think it was $609 if I remember right.

It must be another model of the same gun.

Wonderful eye candy, thank you.

I'd like to add that the S&W logo is stamped and not laser etched.

Another detail that makes this gun so appealing to me.

No lock either makes it an even more compelling self defense weapon.

I'm still looking for the 640 around these parts. No luck yet.

Thanks for the pics and review.
One of the few modern Smiths that I want.

No lock, stainless, and night sights...moon clips too!

Have carried J Frames as a PO from 1970 to 2003. Meh, nice to carry but hard to shoot accurately, in a fast way. Always hoped I would never have to use a J for "real" as they never shot to point of aim for me. In December of 2011 found out on this forum that Smith was going to build the 640 Pro I ordered one immediately and paid full MSRP for it 3 months later in 2/12.

The gun sits beside me as I write and I love this little beast. It has everything to make a J Frame a first class defensive weapon. Serial# is:CRW28XX. My thanks to Smith and Wesson. Great job.....

Only the regular 640 is on the Hangun "Safety" Roster in CA, so we're not allowed to have the no-lock Pro Series model

The "pro-series" looks very nice ...

I happen to feel that the 640 is possibly the most practical revolver that S&W has ever produced. Mine is just a lowly "standard' model, but it's one of my favorites.

The grips are from Spegel.

You wouldn't happen to have some J frame Magnas you could put on it for a photo shoot?

I put them on my 686 and look awesome.

A little brother for it sporting them would be great.

Just wanted to see how it looked.

Wow! That is a great looking revolver. Already cut for moon clips and Trijicon sights to boot. I'm jealous.

A-Yep, Just picked up a 'plain' 640 also. When I carry on my person, usually take the PPK/s. But I like, 'car consul' firearms. So the 60 & 644 work well. Then when I picked up this Jeep, (a really clean 99), (of course) I, 'needed' another one. So I picked up a plain 640, with lock. (no cuts for speed-loader). Tons of 'J' frame holsters, so that's not a problem. Put a Pach 'Gripper', on it. (The SQ butt one, cause I have Big Hands). Use 38 +P's, The lock, (it's Not going to 'jump' and lock when I shoot). But now, here's a question. I really love my, 'Banana' Grip on the 60. Anyone have a set of them laying about? Finish NOT important, it's gonna get banged up anyway. If you want a DA only 'J' frame. Get a 640. For a little carry or conceal firearm. It beats the pants off the *** 'Plastic' stuff.

I had a similar thought process.

Today I put myself on the waiting list at the LGS.

Might be months of waiting but I have to have one.

I have one of the 640-1 and it is awesome. I like the nice small easy to carry 357 Magnum. I still need a front night sight.

I bought one on 01/03/2012. It's proven to be one of my favorites and one of my best new gun purchases. I changed my grips to the Uncle Mike's boot grip common on 642s for pocket carry. It's heavy, but hey, it's a true hand cannon. The sights are what sold me, and the lack of lock, of course. The sights make a huge difference in the J-frame shootability, IMHO.

Thumbs up Thought I had all the guns I wanted

I must admit, that is one beautiful revolver and I will have to start looking for one. Thanks for the post, that is the first I have seen it. I have a 340 PD which is nice but think this has it beat.

Very nice review. One of the best guns SW has come out with in a long time plus no stupid lock, I like your BH leather holster , will have to find one of those. You may want to consider changing out the rebound spring to a lighter 13 or 14 lb. It makes the trigger so much smoother and will not effect ignition.

I was going to get one but I have a regular 640 done by Gemini.
I also was lured by the 327 Federal Magnum and 6 shots so I got that one. I see by the new catalog that they no longer have it. Guess not enough interest in the 327 Mag, I think it is a great round plus it can shot 32 mag and regular 32. I reload so ammo is not a problem. I much prefer shooting the 327 Federal out of the J frame, the 357 Mag is too much for me so I load it with +P 38's.

Little brother 6 shot. 115 Gold Dots chronographed at 1289 FPS, the 110 JSP Federal are 1327 fps and the 85 gr Hydra Shoks 1337 FPS

I got a 640 Pro about a year ago, and really like it. I agree with all of the rest of you that S&W really got it right with this gun.

You should all be aware that there are two thicknesses of moon clips for this revolver. .025, & .020. The ones that come with the gun are .025 and fit most brands of cartridges. The .020 clips are for Winchester, Hornady Critical Defense, and Speer Gold Dot. Don't try to put the cartridges designed for the .020 clip on the .025 clip, or you can bend the clip.
They are both manufactured by T K Customs, and are available from them.

Best Wishes,
Tom

Swee-eet gun, MM6MM6, and I know just why you like it so much.

I had been saving to get myself a really nice gun for my 50th birthday. I love snubbies, but have never owned a nice one. But, I had not made up my mind as to what type of gun I was gonna get. I've always wanted a PPK or a 1911, and was leaning toward one of those. Then I went to Cheaper than Dirt looking for .38spcl range ammo. They didn't have any, of course.

Then I made the mistake of strolling over to the gun counter and saw it - the Smith Model 640 Pro-Series. The best sights I've ever seen on a snubby, the impeccable S&W fit and finish, the awesome trigger pull, the great balance, the great grip... it followed me home, and it is my 50th BD present to myself.

I managed to scrounge up some ammo, and took it to the range. Swee-eet! The Trijicon sights make all the difference in the world, and I've got to say that it is the best snubby I've ever owned. Got it stoked with 110 grain WWB .357 right now, cuz that's the only .357mag I can find. But this Friday I'm gonna try some Remington 158gr FMI loads (.38spcl). I have no problem with carrying a snubby for an EDC, and this S&W 640 Pro-Series is one heck of a sweet primary carry. It's well-worth the extra coin, and in this case I think Smith really does have a right to charge a premium price.

I know you ask the Op by I find mine very stiff. I plan to have a trigger job done to lighten it up a little or do a spring kit job myself. I have a 649-3 that is older and the trigger on that is much smoother. If I could take that trigger and put it on my 640 pro I would be in High Cotton.

The trigger is standard SW J frame. Really heavy. same as all their other guns. The Pro Series does nothing for trigger action like the PC guns have.
As I mentioned above I changed the rebound to 13lb and polished the rebound slide and other wear areas. Makes a big difference. On a carry gun I leave the mainspring alone. Changing it only reduces it by 1/2lb anyway.

I totally agree, S&W got it right on this one. The look, the sights, and the right platform to perfect. The 640 is a durable platform with stainless steel construction. The 640 has enough weight to be shootable. The barrel really sets it off, and adds a great deal to it's looks. For serious carry the XS front sights are as good as it gets. Whats not to love.

A Blued version for a Barbecue Gun might be a good follow up to the 640 Pro.

I have a 442 Pro Moonclip, and the trigger on it was not bad at all out of the box. One of the wifes horse riding buddies has a regular 442 for her concealed carry gun, and the trigger was a little stiff to say the least. I added a Wolff Spring kit with 13 pound rebound spring to it for her, and the trigger pull is now just like my 442 Pro was from the factory. This led me to believe the factory may be using Wolff springs in the Pro Models. Just my observation, not based on any official information.

Well, that's nice... but I'll second the suggestion of the 640 Pro's sibling, the 632 Pro, as an alternate 'ultimate snubnose' suggestion. The 60 Pro grips, SKU #41174 0000, are a great hand fit to my medium+ sized hands, sufficient for the recoil, handsome, and a bargain at $43 + s/t + s/h from S&W Accessories.

Sadly, as has been said, the 632 Pro, the last of the three 632's to be released, is now gone. Besides the .327 Federal Magnums, it will chamber and fire .32 H&RM, .32 S&WL, .32 S&W, and even .32 ACP, due to it's vestige of a rim. I've shot all five in mine - poof loads to HELLO! The grips are great additions for most J-frames.

Thanks for that. I suspected it would be the same as other J's.

My 2012 686+ has a heavy DA pull but it's very smooth so I don't mind.

When my 640 Pro eventually arrives, I think I'll get S&W to work their magic on the trigger.

It's very easy to do yourself. Yes you can pay them or a good Smith and it will be a little better than just a spring change but not worth the money in my opinion.

If you want to do it, let me know I can guide you and provide video links, no special tools needed. I had a post on here a while back but the pictures are deleted when I cleaned out Photo Bucket. I think I still have them.
It is very easy a Caveman can do it.

I like it. I don't think it's heavy at all, and I'd have to say it is one of the better pull weights out there. I've heard some criticisms on it in the past, but I don't share them. Personally, I think that only the Ruger LCR has it beat when it comes to off-the-shelf revolver trigger pulls. But the 640 Pro has the LCR beat when it comes to sights, so over all I'd say S&W got this revolver right - and I'd say it just might be the best snubby on the market right now.

Some of you guys might have more S&W experience than me, but I think that my 640 Pro's trigger pull is pretty nice. It's way better than my Taurus Model 85. It's also better than the Charter I used to own, and the SP101 that my buddy has.

I'll say this about the trigger pull: The weight doesn't matter, it's the smoothness that matters. By smoothness, I mean that it doesn't stack like Colt double actions used to. As you pull the trigger, it does not get heavier or lighter during the pull. It is just perfectly consistent. The cylinder locks up like all S&W revolvers, which is to say it locks up way before the trigger lets the hammer release. If one would care to stage the trigger, pull it until the cylinder locks up and then pause, line up the sights more carefully, then pull the trigger that little bit more to let the hammer fall, it can be done with very little practice. That's for making a more precise shot a greater distance.

I can say that 9 of these revolvers functioned 100% during three days of shooting. All of them hit extremely well in the light, in lowlight, and in the dark.

Shots were being made at 25 yards on steel silhouettes smaller than a human target. The gun was easy to control for all kinds of shooting such as seated or on moving targets or on steel.

The 640 Pro Series rocked!

I agree, it is a fine magnum snub nose. But, I had to change the front sight (Trijicon) on mine to see it better.

I'd agree. The pull weight is nice on my 640 Pro, but what impresses me is how smooth the trigger pull is. I don't care for light trigger pulls on a self-defense gun. There is just too much going on in a self-defense shooting, so the last thing I want to worry about is a hair trigger. I want a trigger pull that is gonna be smooth and consistent.

Combine that with an excellent set of sights (what I think has been the traditional weakness on a snubby), and heavy frame so it can actually digest .357mag rounds or make the good old .38spcl FBI load feel almost like a non +P load, and I think that Smith has come up with the perfect civilian self-defense handgun. Well, at least it's perfect for this civilian. And if the probation department I work for ever lets us probation officers carry on duty, it's gonna be my duty gun as well.

Default 640-1 since 96

I've had my 640 since 96 and never consider getting rid of it. It's an awesome gun. I traded a 443 air weight and $25.00 for it at a gun show in Indiana. I paid $318.00 for the 442. Not knowing it at the time, but now I realize it was a great trade.

I think it was $609 if I remember right.

It must be another model of the same gun.
That one apparently is no longer in production but still listed on the idiotic CA DOJ approved guns roster.

I pirated the Model 65 (Ladysmith) that my wife won in an SCI banquet raffle. A set of Pachmayers and Magnaport treatment makes even 180 gr .357 loadings comfortable. This has become my favorite trail gun. I may have to get a 640 to eliminate all of the razzing about the Ladysmith logo on the 65.

Has anyone sent their Pro to the performance center for work?
I'd like to here how they did on the 640...

Also anyone have some standard old school slab panel grips to put on this gun for a pic!?

The thing that makes me want to buy one of those 640 pros are those sweet Novak Night Sights. I wish I could put them on an airlite PD 38.

As mentioned in post #3, I saw one at my local LGS a couple of weeks ago. After reading up on them, I had to have one. I went to buy it a week later it was gone. Fast foward to today; I stop by my LGS and there is another 640 Pro sitting in the case. Lets just say this one was not going to get away. Its in DROS / waiting period right now and I am one happy dude!

Questions: Why do you think S&W decided to go with moon clips on this revolver? Are the moon clips easy to load and unload? I'm not complaining, just curious as their other j frames don't have recessed cylinders.

Now I have to get a couple of holsters. I think I'll go with the same set up as MM6MM6.

regards.
