Default Line On A 696-4 Classic 5" w/nice Leather Holster

Hi everyone:

In a separate post I indicated I'm interested in a 629 Classic 5".

A fellow-member has one, a early 626-4 Classic 5" made in 93/94 soon after S&W went to CNC. The gun appears in excellent shape though I'm unsure how much it has been shot.

What would you folks consider a reasonable asking price. I want do to right by both of us and think the gun maybe a real find: pre-MIM, pre-lock and from a different era of quality and pride in workmanship.

Take care all,

Rachel

The title says 696. The first sentence mentions a 629. The second paragraph lists a 626. Either this gal is a troll, she's gone without sleep for too long...or there's some adult beverages involved.

Maybe she should start over again?

You are indeed quite right Rachel, I had a 29-5 Classic DX which I have missed sorely, since in my leaner days I traded for a Colt Combat Commander that was not nearly as nice. The guns from that era harkened back to Smith and Wesson glory days, the DX had a beautiful finish, beveled cylinder, well it was outstanding. Since you don't mention a box or papers, I will say in the 750.00 to 1100. dollar range depending on condition and whether or not there are box, tools, and papers. My sincere apologies for the grumpy curmudgeons, I find that behavior out of character with the S&W forum, probably just paid their taxes.

Hope that helps and good luck buying from a fellow member, I hope you are able to reach an agreement that is fair to you both, I much prefer to deal with other members, as I have found them to be both more honest and polite than the general public. Happy hunting, errr shopping??? Billy Magg

P.S. The mods encourage lots of pics and clear communications, also a 3 day non-firing inspection period, with the buyer paying return shipping if dissatisfied...seems to keep most folks happy.

700-950 or so, around here, depending on what others have mentioned concerning box, papers, grips, etc...

Default 696 - Oh Come On, I got 2 of the Numbers Right If Not the Order

Sorry about the 696 - as Winny once said, "It's a damned poor person who can only afford to spell a word one way," or some such thing or another. Lets see: 696/2 = 348, which is somewhat more than 1/2 of 629. Sooo, (348-10)*2 = 676, and -10 is the devil's work, hmmm. Well then, that means if it's May we take three steps sideways and declare that this must be the Ides of 44s which some might call the magnum Equinox, having no SIG-nificance here, which means if S be conjoined with W and its half way between 43 and 45, then it has to be a 629, right? - whew, I was worried it would be a 796, and OMG, we know what that means . . . I'm Blond! (And I am, lol.)

Yes, I'm embarrassed but that's life, and as long as my name is spelled right, we here in Hollywood just love the exposure!!!

Enjoy,

Rachel

Dear BillyM: Thank you for your reply; it's helpful. I'll check on the box, papers, etc. Were are to hopefully talk on Sat AM and we shall see what we shall see. I'm hopeful and excited.

Take care,

Hi Dave: Hmmm, I did manage to mangle that message - was in a hurry and dashed off the note quickly. I'm definitely blond, I'm willing to start all over if it means taking a couple decades of my age, and the only trolling I've ever done was while game fishing - marlin, sails, tuna, and salmon.

Take good care my friend,

R

Well, and I actually had placed a like under that gun ad, but if you will notice where the cylinder Yoke or Crane recesses up into the frame, that top seam nearly disappears when the cylinder is latched up into the frame, always a sign of careful fitting and quality, it has had a spring kit installed to lighten the trigger pull, and that Milt Sparks holster is very nice, so those are all pluses in my book. If all you ever shot in this revolver were warm 44spcls you will be doing OK. I have two 29-2s at present and very seldom shoot 44mag, unless I am hunting. Others have pointed out that even Elmer Keith shot the 44 Magnum sparingly, saving both himself and his guns. This gun is also equipped with the factory "endurance package, so there is additional heat treating, a heavier bolt stop etc. So enjoy and I hope he takes your offer, I'm sure you will be quite pleased, if not send it back, always ask for a 3 day inspection if possible?? Billy

Thumbs up Thank You BillyM

Dear BillyM:

You have provided some great info . . . I'm hopeful we can reach an agreement. The more I hear the better the gun seems to get. Shooting my 686 357/38 mostly finds me shooting 38Spcls, and that's likely to occur with 44Spcls for my 629 when I get it.

I'm pretty new to shooting and it amazes me that such a fine firearm is available, especially after reading how many members seek out the earlier models and are still looking. I also note that a lot of folks have had some real treasures and let them go - it's shame when when reading such an account. But sometimes one has to do extraordinary things to deal with a world that can be pretty tough - been there done that.

Well anyway, I'm offing the light and am hopeful for tomorrow.

Again, thanks for your support . . .

Rachel

For what it's worth, I tend to think the late 1980s and the 1990s were S&W's "New Golden Age" for revolvers. (In actual fact, I'd just call it their high water mark, period, but that's as a shooter, not a collector.)

FWIW, I think Jay Moore has it right. I don't know if I'd say "the" high water mark but certainly right up there with the best of earlier periods - as shooters.

Well my DX was a LOOKER too, and the beveled cylinder, well try to find and 29 Classic DX, and make it a 5 inch for fun, now when the hidey-hole and frame mounted firing pin came along, yes I do love some of the Heritage series, and a friend owned a 45ACP Thunder Ranch, all good but the gold junk on the sideplate. My factory test target was 1.25 at 50yds, but alas.....Now if they got rid of the manhole, and pinned the barrel and recessed the cylinder, well maybe, actually another forum member has a 6 inch pinned and recessed no dash 629, now that might work for me too???? Wow, sounds like a movie is in there somewhere.

Had a great conversation with the 629 seller/member, really a nice guy and got a lot of great info and advice. I'm a Thinkin and may go for the piece on Monday if it's still available.

More to follow as I still have the itch and need to scratch it some how . . . it's a beautiful gun and holster (viewed the high res pics - drool)

Rachel

P.S. Wish I was home and could go shooting today. It'll be two weeks now before I get another opportunity.

Yup. WTHeck is Grande Torina? Google doesn't respond. Sounds like CA, but I thought you couldn't own guns, or even 3D printers, in CA any more???

Dear JN: I do live in Hollywood, CA. It's crazy here, for sure regarding firearms, but still not impossible for the dedicated.

And Grande Torina - a feminization of Clint's "Grand Torino" . . . now get off the lawn (lol). He's older than me but who's counting?

Well GRachel, the world awaits your decision? and now you're just trading Obama bucks, almost like funny money, for a REAL STEEL, wood and leather, but you know you'll have to spring for a gun belt next, so you can wear that N frame down low. billy

Dear Billy (and Others):

Sooo, I do want the gun and totally get it's real value and a deal is probably there to be made (read a ton about the -1, -2, -3, and -4 . . . great history of a firearm). However, the SA trigger pull is exceptionally light, < 2 lbs, and I'm not willing to own a gun that requires an inordinate amount of safety consciousness. Therefore, I'm still on the hunt and a little sad but the seller was great and I'm glad to have had him share his perspective on 629s and shooting - so much to learn!

Thank you for your support and interest - folks here are simply a delight. I'll keep you posted as my search continues.

Take care and tight groups,

R

Smith and Wesson would happily restore that 629 to factory, as you noted earlier those 5" Classics are rather rare, and that one does appear to be fit quite nicely. Its simply a matter of 30 mins and a few springs being replaced, even if they did charge for the springs, (which I would bet 10 bucks they wouldn't), you're looking at 25 dollars, anyway I got the impression that your being a "chick", was a factor, normally I am a MCP myself, but I wouldn't hesitate to sell you a 29/629 as you have built your skill set a step at a time.
Any competent gunsmith could pop the side cover and restore that revolver to factory, heck I could do it, so in spite of the sellers reticence, I would go for it if I were you. So guys the lady is still I assume looking for a nice 5" Classic or Classic DX, maybe one of the brothers on here has a nice low milage NIB or ANIB, with all the factory goodies??? Maybe a local one in Kali that you wouldn't have to jump through hoops for. I think one of the mods like S&W Chad could possibly be of help to you, they may have some contacts?? sorry this one didn't pan out??? besides being a little high it was perfect.
Oh and personally you're on the right track with the pre-lock guns IMHO. billy magg

Actually mmcwillis still has that pinned and recessed no dash 629, he's down to 750.00 which is a steal for a semi rare classic, they did not make these long. billy

Default A 629 and It's All Mine!!!! (yea)

Sooo . . . today at the LGS, this darned new 629 5" Classic kept following me around the store. Maybe because I keep looking at it, and - - - I finally told G to wrap it up and bought the poor thing: beautiful finish, great feel and nice action/trigger.

Here's my plan - going to send it to the PC for one of their action/trigger tune-ups. Am also considering some engraving to personalize it: Tasteful and classy so that it is bumped a notch or two all round, but done so as to be appealing to connoisseurs of great guns made even greater.

Simultaneously, I'm going to look for a great pre-lock 629 (probably a 6" classic) and a 4" model 67 38spcl. If I could do that by year end plus get another Equinox, maybe the P229 or 226 in an S&W 40 and get the barrel conversion to a 9mm, then I'd be pretty darned happy. My new safe would feel like it was being useful, and all my preciouses would have lots of company.

Now, if I could get out to the range every morning for 90 min, what a life that would be.

In real debt and gratitude to so many of you,

R

If you send it to the PC for their action package you can get shipping billed at their corporate rate, which for you living in California will save you at least $200 in shipping fees. Overnight from Cali to Mass would be very expensive, I had a gun shipped to me from San Diego, it was over $100, 3 yeas ago. They wouldn't do engraving at the Express Services rate, however.

Express Services
  • Fast 5-Day turnaround on select Gunsmithing Packages
  • Priority Pick-up and Delivery Service
  • Customer must call Customer Service at 1-800-331-0852 to set up Express Service
  • Round-trip Freight and Handling Prepaid and Billed at Corporate Rate
(Note: This cost not included in prices shown)
Express Service Packages are designed for unaltered guns 1990 and newer. Finishing and major component replacement (barrel, cylinder, frame or slide) cannot be done as Express Service.
