Model 640 Engraved
Can anyone verify if the new Model 640 that is machine engraved has the internal lock? I saw on on gunbroker with photos and it says it does not, yet S&W customer service said it has the internal lock.

I had some credit at S&W so I opted for the M640 Machine Engraved. I've been waiting over 3 months and Smith has finally resumed production of machine engraved pieces. As I've seen 640's - some with and some without the IL - I asked for a no IL and got different stories from different smiths at Smith - some said I could order it w/o the IL and others said the current SKU number mandates they WILL all have IL's from now on. The piece is due here tomorrow. We'll see. Keep you posted.
PS: Regardless of the rumors circulating among newbees, engraved guns are not more accurate.

Well, I'm impressed. The 640 Machine Engraved I rec. today from S&W does NOT have the IL - just like I requested! That's right: no Infernal Lock - and absolutely NIB. Apparently they ARE still making some NoLock guns. The crane has 640-1 which, according to the Std. Cat. of S&W,indicate its DOB is after the 1996 intro of the .357 version of the 640. S&W went to a 640-2 the next year for some NYPD orders, then to a -3 in 2003 indicating the Infernal Lock. I called S&W today and ran the SN on my 640-1 (CPZ7xxx) and it was mfg. in Feb 2011. They sent me what I asked and tends to prove: Smith CAN get shooters the NoLock guns if they are politely persistent. In any case, I'm totally satisfied. The smiths at Smith got it right.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Unrelated note on IL's: A smith at Smith also recently said "There has never been a proven case of an IL 'freezing' in a firefight. In most every case an IL is blamed for a malfunction, its a backed-out extractor rod, some other part breaking, or bad ammo that causes a lockup. It's only in aluminum frame IL guns fed a diet of heavy loads that can cause an IL to break loose."
Hey, this is S&W talking: not me. If ya differ, I ain't sayin....I'm just quotin.
No mystery, its current production. So far pretty much every Centennial S&W makes is available in a no lock now, even the 640.
Congrates on your new revolver btw.
