Default New model 10 owner with questions!

Hello,

I am new here, have had many many firearms so far in my life. ALOT of S&W autos and revolvers, 1911's, Glocks to name a few.

I recently received an older looking model 10 from my father. It is a square butt, heavy barrel 10-8. I am wondering if you all could look up how old it is for me? The serial number is AEE61xx.

Also the trigger likes to stick a little bit on the "reset" portion of travel. I.e. if I pull the trigger fully to the rear then softly and slowly release it it will stick at about the halfway reset area of travel. And will not return fully on its own.

If I squeeze the trigger fully rearward and quickly let off the trigger it snaps right back forward like normal. It only happens when I slowly let it forward. I have never had a revolver do this before. Admittedly I am not a greatly experienced revolver owner, mainly own safe queens when it comes to them.

Thanks for any help!

First off, welcome to the Forum.
You're M10-8 was born in 1984 according to the Catalog.
I'm not a gunsmith, but I'll take a guess and say it might need some light lubricating in it's innards.

I'm not able to help you with a date, but others will. It's likely that your gun needs a good cleaning...probably some grease and grit has built up in the mechanism over the years. A quick way to take care of it would be to take the grips off and spray it out real good with solvent, then dry it and lightly lubricate it. A friend of mine uses the technique of putting used revolvers in a gallon baggie, pours in some Hoppes #9, or plain old kerosene, and gives 'em a few good shakes (grips removed, of course). Since you're not a revolver guy, and may not want to be, I would not recommend pulling the sideplate. And there is really no compelling need to do so.

Thank you P&R Fan! Also thank you DAinTX for the advice, I will take the grips off and clean everything out and see where it gets me from there.

Is the proper way to take the sideplate off: take screws out, smack butt of the pistol until the plate pops off method? I have seen my father do that a few times when I was younger. Never knew if this was correct or not though!

That's how it's done. I use a wood dowel to hit it. You must get the correct fitting screw drivers. Even for grip removal, or you'll burr the screw slots and scratch up the grips or side plate when it slips off. Once inside a rebound spring compressor tool is so handy. I would think you father would have gotten the tools you need because he knew how to open them up. Most who don't know try to pry up the plate. It always dents and burrs where ever you pry. I could take pictures of my 19-5 to show where the previous owner butchered it. When you get the grips off check the hammer spring screw, some people back it off thinking they are improving trigger pull. The screw is ment to be in all the way, fixes a lot of lite primer strikes. Then just balistal under the hammer spring tward the trigger. That's where the rebound slide and spring sit and that's what returns the trigger. Then hit it with a shot of clp dry it up with a clean rag and some q tips so the oil doesn't soak the grips or gum up the works later on.
