3-400. The MSRP on a brand new one from the factory is $459, but nobody hardly ever pays MSRP anymore. For example, the MSRP on my 637-2 wyatt was $549, I picked it up for $475. Following that model, that's ~14% off MSRP, meaning your 642 would be $359 new in a store.

Prices in S. Nevada are WAY higher than the above quoted prices, say $529. In all shops. I regret you may have to sell it; the 642 is one of the best and most useful that S&W produces.

$375-425. I paid towards the higher end locally, though I could have driven 45 minutes each way to save $40.

I'm going to come up with the same value others did, but I will couch it a different way. Your competition on a recent model that is still being sold is the new version of that gun purchased direct from a gun store. Your "owned but new" gun will probably not pull the identical price, but maybe you could move it at a 10% discount from the street price of a new one.
If you live in a state with a sales tax, but it doesn't apply to private party transactions, maybe you could get a little closer to the street price for a new gun on the understanding that there would be no tax bite.

Thanks. I may put it up for sale depending on what my engraver says tomorrow.
