Default 629-3 Magna Classic

Hello,

I joined the forum some time ago, regularly benefitting from the various posts and now seek some specific advice.

What pros or cons can you provide me on the limited production (3,000 qty.) and numbered Model 629-3 Stainless Steel Magna Classic w/ 7.5" barrel, specifically...

1) What one might be worth in a 98-100% condition with all the original goodies?
2) Should such a pistol be limited to a safe queen because of its collector value?
3) If I wanted to regularly shoot a Model 626 should I purchase something less expensive and a Model 626 that isn't considered such a collector item?

Thanks for any help you can provide,
Ron

Default Magna Classic

Do you know what year(s) the Magna Classic made? 7-1/2" is an unusual size for S&W. I just bought a NIB 657-5 Classic Hunter, 7-1/2" bbl. & saw this thread of a couple other 7-1/2" C-Hs. Armkev was wanting one too. To me, they're all "pros" & no "cons" for these big boys, but not everybody has the appetite for these.
Classic Hunters

Just found this, if you hadn't already....cool!!

Hi Ron,

Some guys on here will tell you that all guns were made to be shot and anything less is a waste. Others believe that there are 'collectables' and there are 'shooters'. I have plenty of each, and I think the Magna Classic series definitely is a 'collectable', a 'show' gun. They run $1250 to $1400 on Gun Broker and come in a beautiful presentation case. If you want to shoot, get a 629 DX for a lot less. Looks the same, just depends what you want it for.

Bill

I feel the magna classics are safe queens, there is nothing wrong with shooting one, I've heard they are wicked accurate. If I owned one it would lay there in red velvet because I've got a DX and a few of the regular classics to shoot. If moneys tight you might be better served with a regular production gun. Hope this helps
