Default Front Sight Height for 640/642

I would like to draw on the groups' collective experience, if I could.

I have a 640 and a 642 that I will be setting up to shoot standard pressure 125 grain hollowpoints. Of course, they are printing low at 10 yards. I want both to shoot to point-of-aim at 10 yards, especially for my wife (we have to qualify with the guns we will carry concealed where we live and I do not want her to have to deal with correcting for point-of-aim if she needs to use her gun).

Do any of you have any experience with how high the front sight blade should be in something close to this situation? On the 640 I can simply change sight blades but on the 642 I will have to machine (file) the blade and I am always afraid of cutting too much material (don't ask me how I know ;=} ).

Before you look at changing sights, what hold are you using? My 642 is a 100% combat hold. If I hold at 6'o clock at all they end up low. This will of course be worse at greater distances.

My 2 cents: I would not file the site down on the 642, I would just aim a bit higher.

Given that there's so much difference in ammo, you would probably have to file a little bit off, test it, repeat as necessary.

But hey, it's your gun, do what you like

The 642 is primarily my wife's carry gun. I have always taught her to put the sight where she wants the bullet to and she does great (women are generally better shots than men). I do not want her to be indecisive in a confrontation by thinking "now where do I aim." That said the distance will probably she short enough that the point of aim won't matter.

I have worked on metal for years but, sitting here holding my flat file and a $500 gun, I get rther nervous.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Hold on center-mass. At very short combat distances there will be less deflection.

Maybe I ought to just let her carry the 640 and use 158 grain ammo. That will solve the sight height problem.

Thanks for your suggestions.
