Default "Extra" numbers engraved on new 640 Pro???

Hello gents & ladies,

I just received a new 640 pro (sku 178044) and had a few questions about it.

Serial number CTY9XXX

There are some additional numbers engraved on the gun and I wanted to be sure it has not had parts replaced, and is indeed new, as I bought it from an out of state dealer.

938 is engraved on the yoke (inside), the right grip frame and inside the side plate – these numbers all match (I assume they are some type of assembly number?)

38280 is engraved on the right side of the grip frame and the letter C on the left side of the grip frame

38278 is engraved on the cylinder under the ejector star, as well as the number 22

I was wondering if the 38280 and 38278 should be the same, and if perhaps the cylinder is a replacement? Would like to be sure, as the gun was bought new from the dealer. The fired case is from 3/14/13, so I imagine all is well, but I am a little AR about stuff like this

Thanks for any help that you can provide!

They appear to be assembly numbers. I do not have those numbers on the cyl. I've owned Smiths since 1969 and their assembly procedures change from time to time.

Bottom line is: Is the weapon servicable? Does it shoot well? How is the fit and finish. Years ago I was a Smith trained police armorer and the fit and finish is an indicator of personal attention and integrity of the weapon. I love my 640 Pro and consider it the high water mark of Smith Js. Shoot and enjoy yours.

Thanks, it is a great little revolver. I emailed smith the same time that I posted here and their response was part / assembly numbers. I'm enjoying mine!
