SW 586- is it worth it?
So I have a local person I might trade with who has a NIB - 1980's 586. Never fired and has original box and paperwork. He is claiming that they go for $950 in that condition in Texas. I have a hard time believing that after reading other forums. I have a BNIB colt 1911 lightweight he wants to trade with $350 on top of his SW.
To me it seems like I am on the short end. Your thoughts?

It's a great revolver and a nice package but not $950 worth IMO. What do you value your Colt at? I would say the 586 is an $800 deal.

Definitely on the short end, the blued 586 in NIB condition is a 700-725 gun. Your box pictured is a older box that the 586 would have not come in. That is not the Original box. I would put the value on what's pictured there about $ 600.00 I just sold a nickel one for 825.00 shipped and that had the correct original box.

Actually, I think that some of the early 586's did come in the two piece box with the metal on the corneres. I have a 6" with the same type of box and I did not pay any premium back when I bought it for being with the box.
He does not mention a serial number nor dash number. Mine is a no dash with a very early serial number.
I do not disagree with the prices mentioned here. I would think a NIB 4" would be in the 700 area and 950 is really reaching.

I would go to Gunbroker and try to find sold examples of a NIB 586. I am betting they are in the $700-800 range.

I love 586's, however $700 to $750 is about the realistic limit for a NIB early version.
Now, on Gun BROKE r some dolt with too high a credit limit and too little common sense would pay $1200

My Colt is a brand new in box Colt lightweight government. With taxes I paid right over $1,200 for it out the door.

Welcome to the forum!
I wouldn't even think of doing that deal.
I would agree with the prices mentioned above. For example; I prefer the 686, and with those grips, box etc (assuming it's correct) I wouldn't pay more than $750ish AND I'd pay less for a 586. But that's just me.
TO ME, the 586 would be worth 700-725 and the Colt would be worth 800-1,000. So the $350 would go the other way. If you know what I mean.

It's worth whatever it's worth to you and whatever you're willing to pay. Don't not really matter the going price unless you're looking at it as a financial investment. I don't mind paying more for older new and new condition guns for the simple fact that they are old (cool factor for me) and still new (idiots have not been "modifying" it for the past 20 years). Old guns in new condition catch my eye and I'm willing to pay more than the next guy for them. That's just me.

Your "local person" has been standing in the Texas sun toooooooooo long. I agree with others that the $350 goes to you. I don't agree with the enthusiasm that Colt collectors show for anything with a pony on it, but there is such a thing as "fair and reasonable" value.
A M586 for $950 NIB is fantasy, and $600 for your Colt is insulting. But my opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it. I have 10 S&W model 586s and 4 Colt 1911s.

Smith & Wesson 586 - Is It Worth It?
steamloco76 nailed it (again)!
"steamloco76; Now, on Gun BROKE r some dolt with too high a credit limit and too little common sense would pay $1200 "
This past Sunday I watched a Model 586 No Dash nickel, initially posted at $825.00 finally close at $1,454.00 when the gavel fell for the last time on GB. 18 bids. Sold to a young whipper-snapper with six GB purchases under his belt.

Guns sell at market value correct? I can go to the store and buy a colt 1911 any day of the week.
When is the last time you saw a 586, no dash, no smith mod, original box (rare initial release box) serial number AAAxxxx come up for sale?
I can buy a like new colt 1911 for $800-$900 all day long. For $1200 I'd buy a Kimber. I've turned down offers of $900 cash for the gun. Oh it's mine :-p.
I have a couple 13-1's if that's more in y'all's price range. Haha also have a model 64 I'd like to sell, my wife likes the 357s better then the 38. The 64 shoots great though.

I bought a 1992 586, great shape, for $500.00.
Just my 2 cents.
Good luck.

I'll just add that depending on the "dash" of that gun the box can absolutely be correct for it. My 686, my dad bought it new in July 1981, came in that same box.
As for the trade + cash, I'll be another voice in the choir of "no way". Your 1911 is at least worth $850, as it's new in the box. If it were me, the only trade I'd do is an even swap but I'd have to really really want the 586.

Hello Conservative T.
There is a short answer for this. If you want it, make your best offer, if you can't get close, walk.
It is his gun, but you can chose to not deal. It is your choice.
I think it is at best an even trade. If I could not get that, I would walk.

I bought an "as new" 586 (no dash) blued 6" no box for 700
last year. If you really want the gun i would also ask him
if he wants to trade you could go "straight up" and thats
about it. As previously stated, the foolishness on GB is not
a true indicator of the value of these guns.

SW 586- is it worth it?
I have made two 586 No Dash purchases this year through GB.
1) April - 98%, no docs or box or "M" stamp. 4" nickel $725.00
2) August - 99%, all docs and box, with "M" stamp 6" nickel $872.00
I just had both appraised two weeks ago. Both came in at $800.00. Neither came with "round counters" so I have no idea how many rounds were fired by the previous owners.

I know I'm new to the forum, but I can't help but chime in with everyone else! Too much! At best... an even swap and that depends on your desire for the revolver.

Early L frames did come in the two piece box, didn't they? However, that early, make sure it has been through the Product Improvement and has the "M" stamped in the crane. Assuming that work has already been done, I say the price quoted is still way too high. Quite frankly, if you have one of the 5 inch Lightweight Government Models that were introduced just a couple of years ago, he should be giving you the money difference, and I am not sure $350.00 is enough.

Two or so years ago I paid $425.00 for a 586 no dash, in very good condition. That price was for the revolver only, no box or tools. As nice as they are I find it hard to believe that 586's have doubled in price in 24-36 months. To me that would be a $600.00 gun at best, so I would keep looking.
Good Luck
