I just got back from Sand Burr in Indiana .
A friend and I took the Basic Revolver school.
The school was nice , the owner "ruff " but friendly and most knowledgeable
We ran 3in m-25's and 625's
Millspec handloads in 45acp with moon clips and 45AR .
Although I am not Jerry M , those moonclips are Quickkkkkkkkkk!!!!!!!
One thing though , For CCW [pants belt] I will need a lighter gun.
Does anyone have info which models [Nightguard etc] have the problems burning through the top strap or guard???????
41 mag is my prefered round but would consider 357 and up.

No idea...there...The nightguards have a steel cylinder versus titanium...Which I think gives them an addvantage...But I dislike the titanium...

a 657 Nighguard is chambered in 41 Magnum and pretty Bad *** in my opinion

327 eight shot with moon clips. Think of it as a J frame on steroids.

I shoot my M25 effector and 625 3" and carry the 325NG. had them out last Friday, very cool.

I'd go for the 325 PD. Scandium frame, titanium cylinder. Very light & shoots good too! You can get 'em with a 4 or 2-1/2 " barrel.

I hav e never heard of a S&W revolver of any type that has burned through it's topstrap. Where have you heard of this?

The 41 Magnum Night Guard is the 357NG, not the 657. 657 would be a stainless revolver.

I have three NGs at the moment, a 310NG, 327NG and 357NG.



While hard to come by, the 310NG will offer you the greatest versatility. I opened mine to 10MM Magnum. The revovler will now chamber and fire 40S&W, 10MM Auto and 10MM Magnum.



If you handload the 10MM Magnum cartridge offers you 41 Magnum performance with moon clip convience. Obviously if you do not hand load this is not an advantage for you. My bet is that an avid 41 shooter is also a hand loader.

The 357NGs are not that common to find either. Kind of a toss up as to which is tougher to find the 310NG or the 357NG

A little eaiser to locate would be a 357PD. This is a 4" revolver.



I put the factory combat grips on mine. I also replaced the factory V notch rear sight blade with a standard white outline square notch

I like N Frames.

I like Snubs.

But that doesn't automatically make them a good combination. I really wanted to like like the idea , came away otherwise.

Back in mid-'80s , I got a then state of the art .44Mag , 2.75in bbl , grip reduced to) K frame size.

Took a while to find a grip that felt and balanced well , but eventuqlly found some serve reasonably well. At the time full power .357 from a snub (medium fr ) was no problem. But had to get Mag Na Ports on .44 to be vaguely controlable in actual rapid DA. Then I aquired a chrono . The vel loss was huge , even compared to a 4in . Was going to take it Boar hunting, and it took a hefty chare of Blue Dot ( it was still well regarded at the time , and wanted faster than 2400 due to bbl length ) to get a worthwile velocity w/ 240 swc.
And then I fired it ONCE , in an open field w/o ear protection. Once was enough, my ears rang the rest of the day, and I promised myself that I would never fire it w/o ears again unless someone was shooting at me.

And for the final straw , I got curious , and did some comparing. The .44 was longer , taller , and thicker than 4in SB M65 (wt was close , but wasn't an issue either way ).

I still have the .44 , and a cute aspect to it is that the Federal 200gr LHP .44spl and full power .44Mag 240jhps hit to same POI.

But I also deduced that if I'm going to step up to an N frame , I need to commit to at least a 4in bbl. If I don't want to do that , a medium frame .357 is a better answer.

biggfoot44 --- you definitely lose a fair bit of velocity with the Magnums out of a snub. I imagine the lower velocity big-bores (.44 Special, .45 ACP) will lose less velocity as a percentage.

But some guys take all that "sissy talk" about what's efficient and practical in a handgun and throw it away...

Most Night Guards have a replaceable Stainless Steel Blast Guard. I have heard of some of the Magnums blowing the Blast Guard out of the gun, and needing it replaced, which S&W has.

I have a 310NG in 40 S&W and 10mm. It is a great revolver for concealed carry. I really like the 325NG also. The 325NG is a 45acp N Frame.
To me the N Frame Night Guards feel more like carrying a steel K Frame snub.
As far as I know the 310NG, 325NG, and Governor are the only ones that load with moon clips.

I would not have a problem with a 41 or 44 Magnum, but full house factory ammo would be a little brutal I am afraid. I am also sure that Buffalo Bore and probably others make carry ammo that is shootable in a Night Guard, you just need to look for it.

Yes, the NGs have the blast shield & as light as they are, I don't think you'll shoot enough full magnum loads in to ruin the shield like some have done with it's longer barrelled siblings. If you handload them to a more moderate power level, then it's not an issue.

I just added a 396NG to my collection of NGs. Seems like a nice compromise in size & power, & it's a little lighter than the N frames. I just loaded up some fodder for it so I'll let you know if that's right once I get to the range.

The 325NG is the lightest of my N frames (short cylinder, big holes)

Oh yeh, it's best to shoot them with the rubber grips on. Hard grips hurt after a little bit, but they look nicer!

I have smaller guns but the N frame just "sings" for me.
I know the 44mag has some problems with the guard burning through
or departing the area but did not know about the 41mag.
I have steel 3in 41,44,45acp guns.
The 44 is ported and a brute.
the 45 is "fun"
But the 41 just seems to go where I want when I want and 7 yd
SD shooting causes the center of the target to shred.
Ps I only shoot full power mags in these guns.[or mill spec 45]
The big problem is the middle age spreed/pull down the pants
condition , and I was looking at the lighter n-frame's.

The lighter guns are certainly easier to carry. I don't have a lightweight, but I sure like my 657 in .41 magnum.



Its weight can be noticeable with the wrong belt.
