Default The sore spot, or guns you sold and regretted it.

I'll start, and open myself up to vast ridicule. I got a CHERRY 10-2 with stock uh, stocks and a set or rubber grips for $250.00 about 10 years ago. Thing looked almost brand new. Anyway I shot the heck out of it for years and in a fit of stupidity, traded it off for a like new AMT Hardballer second design. While the AMT was a wonderful gun, I always missed that darn 10-2~ Still do to this day.

Are you sure it wasn't a 10-1 or -3? The 10-2s I've seen all had the standard or tapered barrel.

Anyhow, to answer your question, I can't recall selling a gun I really wanted and decided to keep. I can live with the (relatively few) sales I've done.

Sold of or traded many. Usually because I changed my mind, something I wanted even more came along, change in taste...Sold/traded many including Garands, Lugers, Mausers, M&P (current semi autos). Haven't regretted any

Oh, let's see...I moved to Chicago twenty five years ago, which I needed to do for business, so I complied with the handgun ban and sold my six inch Colt Python, two Jim Stroh custom Colt 1911s, an M60, and an M64. I'm in the process of fixing my regret by buying better guns than I had. I still miss those guns, though!

Yep, it was a 10-2. It was hard to find pics of a 10-2 with the heavy barrel when I looked before I got it. Are they rare? Now I feel worse.

The ones I regret the most....
A pre war Heavy Duty 5". It had been reblued, but very nicely. I got it for $250 because the store didn't know what it had. The grips alone were worth close to that. Traded it later on for something else.
A plain jane M&P 5". Great shape but nobody wanted revolvers at the time. Think I paid $195 for it. Can't even remember what I got for it.
Colt 1903 Pocket.
Walther PP in .380

In 1967 I was given a NIB Browning A-5 Light Twenty, 28" vent rib barrel, modified choke. Lovely French walnut. Loved the gun and took a lot of doves and rabbits with it. Then alcoholism kicked in, hard. I was catching hell from my then-wife about the cost of my drinking. Sold the Browning. Later sold a fine Remington 700ADL in .243 Winchester, scoped, for the same reason.

I've kicked myself for both ever since (and haven't had a drink for a very long time).

There have been others over the years, but those two screw-ups sting the most.

When I started I could only afford cheap guns,so those went with no regrets. The few good ones I let go,I no longer had a use for,so no regrets.Everything has been an upgrade.

I've been so fickle in my life, changing my mind from one interest to another.. guns is not exception. I've lost count or can't remember every gun I ever owned but I wish I had all of them back. A Ruger 77 30-06 with tang safety comes to mind, a Marling 336 with walnut stock is another, a couple of Ruger .22 "Mark" pistols, A now very valuable High Standard "double nine" (it was actually stolen). a 98 Mauser factory chambered for 30-06, an 03A3 Springfield.... the list is seemingly endless. My self imposed rule now is "hang on to them no matter what" or I'll live to regret it.

I do still have my first .22 rifle. I've owned it for 64 years... a single shot Rem. 514. I've never considered selling inherited shotguns, I'm just the custodian of those. And I've owned my S&W 686 for 26 years, again never considered selling it.

Have only sold a few, and never regretted it. Most of my regrets are for the ones that I didn't buy. I guess those are the firearms analogy to the "ones that got away" while fishing.

+1 for the last post. I've had several of those "is this a good buy?" while walking the isles at a gun show. I'll pass on it and go home only to discover that it was a steal. Of course, when I go back the next day, it's gone. I've decided to start trusting my trusting my instincts more.

Only sold a couple with no real regrets but I passed on a LNIB 3914TSW a couple of years ago because I thought it was $50 too high...still lose sleep over that one.

I did sell a 98% 6" blue Python that was a pretty gun...like shooting my Smiths better but wouldn't mind having it back just to admire now and again.

So true, and with me it is usually when I see a deal and either hem and haw round till it is gone, or one comes up when I can't justify the purchase that month or week....GAH! Like the beauty 19-5 in 2.5in, nickel I lost out on by a DAY for a trade the 19-5 owner said he would have done in a heart beat if I had sent him the request the day before I did.

I only traded or sold 2 guns in my life and I regret both of them! Around 1969 I let my brother talk me into trading him my 3-screw Ruger Blackhawk .357mag for his pump shotgun. Not sure what happened to the shotgun but that Ruger was missed almost immediately!
I let a friend talk me into selling him my Factory bright nickel Colt MKlV Series 70 1911 I had bought brand new for $170.00 in about 1974! I, foolishly, thought I wanted a blued one instead. My brother let the replacement blued Series 70 rust and pit terribly when I loaned him the gun and forgot to get it back from him for about 6 months! I made him buy me another one to replace that one and, by then, the Series 80 had been introduced and it was a 1982 model. I still have it. All stock and pristine but the box and docs are long gone!

Oh my God! Don't get me started on all the 1911s I should have never sold. JUST to name a few,

Ted Yost SA Defender he did for me while I was there at Gunsite and he was affordable.
Dan Wesson Bobtail Classic, UGH!
First year Kimber Tactical Pro.
My first 1911, a Series 70 Gold Cup.

I learned early to purchase only the firearms I really wanted. I have a bunch now (need another new safe), but have never sold or traded one...can't seem to let them go. I have gifted two different firearms, a Colt Police Positive and a Marlin single shot bolt .22, but that is it. I have several firearms of a variety a good friend laments letting go (627-0, Colt Combat Elite [old version] among others). I tease him from time to time, but he needed diapers and school supplies on a young cop's salary, so doesn't feel too bad.

I moved up to Anchorage, Alaska in 1969 when I was in the AF, and took all of my guns with me. While there, and short on funds, I decided I needed a very nice 1950 original Model 70 Supergrade in .257 Roberts. Problem was I had to part with an almost new M53 Jet, in 8 3/8" bbl, and newly fitted cylinder, an almost new Colt Woodsman, and a Ruger Super Blackhawk. Don't miss the Ruger too much, but the Colt and 53 still hurt!

I had lusted for a Browning HP Mark III for many years and finally found a near mint one with (4) 13 round magazines and bought it. I was thrilled and loved that gun and after about 4 years I sold it to buy a Sig P220R Super Match SAO. While I loved the Sig Super Match I began to really miss the Browning HP. Well it took 4 years but I found another Browning HP Mark III and bought it and the Sig Super Match has been gone for a while now.

Recent Browning HP purchase to stop the crying late at night

I kinda miss a lot of the guns that have come and gone, and one near miss, a Marlin Model 1894 Octagon barrel carbine in 44 Magnum. The ones I've owned but sold that I really wish most that I still had were the Ruger Buckeye Special 32 combo gun and the Model 16-4 I bought when they first came out. I played around with them both long enough to enjoy them then sold them to buy single shot rifles. Oh well, "we grow too soon oldt und too late schmardt!"

I've sold and regretted selling a Model 36 3-inch HB and a Model 27 6-inch. Both were sold in the late 1970s or early '80s. I have replaced the Model 36 with a duplicate just this past week. Someday I will replace the 27 if I can ever get one at a reasonable price.

I once sold a Model 25-5 with 4-inch barrel, regretted it, and bought it back. Won't let it go again.

Cheers,
Whisper

I've regretted getting rid of 2 but really only 1. I bought a NIB Colt Diamondback 4" in 1972 and when I lost my job in 1976 I sold it and a Colt 1911 I inherited from my dad who used it when he was a deputy sheriff. I'll always wish I had that Diamondback again but 3 years ago the person I sold the 1911 to offered to sell it back to me and I jumped on it. I sold it to him for $150 in 1976 and he actually sold it back to me for that amount. That one will I will pass on to my daughter when I die. She lusts after it every time she sees it.

Where to start?

Years in the Army often meant selling some when transferring, something I did too often.

Colt MK IV Series 70 .45
Colt Hartford 1927 Modelo Ejercito Argentino
Colt 1911 AA rebuild.
Springfield 1903A3
U.S. Stevens 520-30 Slide Action Riot Shotgun

But, I always managed to preserve my S&W revolvers!

Really glad you got "your" 1911 back

On my list is a 1962 M70 300 Win Mag. Thought I needed the $$, big mistake. I replaced it when Winchester started making CRF rifles again, not the same.......

Red face I try not to think about it.

I've been buying/trading guns for going on 50 years. The list of guns that I have traded off that I wished I hadn't would be too long to list. But, I've had the pleasure of owning and shooting a large variety of guns, great country we live in, and still own a number of them that I enjoy very much. So, I try not to dwell on the mistakes I have made in the past.

About a week ago, I sold my Glock M19 2nd gen with crimson trace lazer grips for $400. I regret that sale and wish I could have it back (at the same price course of).

I used the $400 to purchase another firearm but, in the big scheme of things.........I should have just tapped the bank account.

Aloha, Mark

My list is almost endless as well.
I'm a trader from way back.
Lets see..A 6"model 19 nickel that was my first handgun
(don't even remember what dash it was).
A Browning Auto Five sweet sixteen.
Probably my most painful was a Sig P210 like new with
box that i had 750 bucks in back in early 80's
Believe i sold it at a gunshow in Columbus OH and turned
around and bought a Colt A2 H-Bar.

My one and only regret is selling my S&W 29 with 8 3/8 barrel. Bought it new in 1974 and had to wait almost a year to get it because of the Dirty Harry movies popularity at that time.

I buy/sell/trade frequently, and in that way, I get to own many great guns. Due to a limited gun budget, I am forced to keep my "collection" at only a few guns at a time.

But, the biggest regret I have was a sale that I made to a forum member, of my LNIB 66-4. (He did offer me first chance if he ever sells it..)

I will never sell another gun as long as I live. After I'm gone it won't matter.

Yes i have done it twice

In the summer of 2011 i sold off a Colt official police nickel finish made in 1957 and a S&W Model 36 no dash made in 1972 to help my family pay for a new fridge that we needed.

In August 2013 i sold off a Heritage rough rider single action .22 a Second generation Glock 17 and A S&W model 60-10 with a 3 inch barrel to help my family pay some bills off.

Out all of those guns selling the .22 hurt the most.

Every Smith that I have sold or traded, I regret selling or trading it. I won't bore you with a list, but the last two were M12s, a 2" and a 4". Even though I sold them to fund another Smith, I regret that I had to sell them to fund the other Smith. I know, silly, but I just hate losing a Smith.

Same here! I spent 10 years in Germany consecutive from 88-98 and that is when all the base closures were going on. if they had a rod and gun club, they were selling off guns for 25% off below wholesale as they were not allowed to make a profit.
Let's put it this way, i got a Nickel model 29 for $200, total of 6 guns for $500! I can't remember how many i've sold or traded, but that 29 eats at me, plus a M19 no dash nickel snub that i loved.

should have posted that Glock 19 on the board, i have the exact same gun with the CT's and could have used another!!!
nowadays, i only buy to keep, but if there is quick flip that is guaranteed, i'll pick it up.

Of all I've sold off over the years the ones I miss & regret selling the most are:
S&W 4" 66-2 with 3 Ts (sold here on the forum)
S&W 2.5" 66-2 (also sold here on the forum just this year)
S&W 2" 64 (don't remember the "-", also gone to a forum member lol)
S&W 4567
Les Baer Thunder Ranch Special 5"

"Regrets, I've had a few, but then again too few to mention, I did what I had to do." lol

Wow, I was thinking the same thing. I have a M19 2nd gen Glock I was thinking of parting with....had it since new. I think I'll hold onto it now, even though I never shoot it.

Thanks!

I was lucky in the Army because of the combat MOS. I was either training members, or in charge of an arms room so had many 1911s and M16s at my disposal along with M60s and the odd M2. So my gun jones was fulfilled in the Army. After that though when i had to buy my own, (before the Army I had a Diamondback and a marlin Golden 39a) I started buying guns and have never stopped. Too bad some of the best are long gone. As an 18B in the Army, you get a lot of range time!

Too many to list, but close to the top would be:
Several like-new DCM 1911A1s (USS, Colt, and Ithaca)
Several minty Lugers
Several like-new DCM M1903A3s and one M1903A4 (that one really hurts)
An original Ruger flat-top Blackhawk .44 Mag
My very first .22 rifle - A Remington 550-1 (In my opinion, the finest .22 autoloader ever made)
An original Volcanic pistol

S&W 4596, first handgun I ever owned.

S&W Model 49, my BUG for quite a while, my eyes just got to the point that I couldn't pick up the sights very well. I replaced it with a 640 Pro Series which is great, but I still miss the old hump-back.

1950 Target (twice, no less)
Mint HD, long barrel
Numerous Winchester 70's, 71's, '86's

When you get old, you have a lot of opportunities for regrets!
