Default N Frame carriers, get your burly selves in here.

Whether it comes from personal conversation or the internet, it seems the conventional wisdom is that N Frame revolvers are, for a number of reasons, unfit for carrying (particularly CC). I am likely not the first to do so, and I will certainly not be the most knowledgeable, but I would like to humbly offer my dissenting opinion. I will speak on my personal experience as it pertains to what I have taken to be the two most common objections to carrying an N Frame, i.e., the physical drawbacks stemming from the heft and weight of the piece, and the aesthetic issues regarding difficulty in concealing it.

I'll start with weight. SOOO many people told me, "Oh boy, you're going to get tired of lugging that huge thing around within a week, snirk snirk." What? Do all of you guys have little birdy arms? (kidding...) Anyway, I've been shoulder carrying my stainless, six inch 629 for over a month now and I love the way it feels. I feel that big smoke wagon resting under my arm and know that I'll be ready the next time a Grizzly wanders into the haberdashery. Maybe my perspective is unique, as I had been renting and shooting an N Frame before I had ever had a gun, and had only ever planned to carry one, so it didn't seem cumbersome relative to having worn something smaller.

With regard to concealment, I was legitimately shocked the first time I put on a sport coat, suit jacket, and hoodie while wearing the gun. From everything I had heard, I was half expecting to see a bulge so outrageous that I would have to eat crow and get a different gun. I carry my gun under my left shoulder, and regardless of the garment (so long as it isn't a very light fabric), the impression of the gun is pretty modest. The outline of the but of the grips is visible, but is not protruding far and really does seem subtle. I live in a predominantly liberal metropolitan area, and I would expect most people (as I once did before changing my views on guns) to recoil at the sight of a giant .44 magnum. To this point, I have not picked up on anyone noticing it. I will acknowledge, knowing it is there myself, that I can see it - so too would I imagine could someone familiar with firearms. So to be completely honest, this method of carrying might better be designated "covered carrying" than concealed, but in my case the difference has been nominal.

So I just wanted to come in here and congratulate all the other broad shouldered behemoths in here who have gone against the grain and equipped themselves with a monster worthy of such a description.

I have both a 3" 625-3, and a 2-3/4" 310 Night Guard. I have no problem carrying either concealed. The 625 is definently heavier on the hip.
I prefer belt carry in a quality Pancake holster.

My first Smith was a 4 inch M 28.
I open carried it in Virginia and North Carolina back in the 70s.
Sometimes It needed to be carried concealed.
I was about 160 pounds or so at the time and there weren't many holsters available for concealment. None I knew of so it was Mexican carried just a handful of times at most.
I had one occasion to just reach for it at the Norfolk bus station when I was carrying a large sum of cash taped to my leg in an envelope. Some clown chose t approach me and offered for sale some cocaine. I quickly asked him if he wanted to die? I don't think I ever saw eyes so big before or since and he left in a flash. Too bad my bus had arrived as this happened or it would have been a bit more involved. Seems like I can not just ignore things like this. Maybe i should have perused a LEO career. It is way too late now.
I now carry a k or L frame with 2 1/2 to 4 inch barrel. Depending on the mood. The 686p 3 inch is very nice and about the same size and weight as a 28 four inch. Problem being the SQ butt on the N frame. I should get a nice Simply Rugged pancake one day.
It is on the list.

Well I got the SR Cumberland here it is.

Nice. I am thinking about belt carrying when the situation is informal enough to wear an untucked shirt, but I am a bit concerned about the barrel length causing uncomfortability while sitting.

Ha! That's a great story. I really dig the seven shot 686 models, and have been thinking about getting one.

I've carried my 627 Pro into gas stations or quick run into the store before. I agree the weight isn't too bad, then again I wear a gun belt at work that isn't the lightest. But for every day carry I still prefer my Glock 19 with a spare mag. 8 rounds of .357 is pretty awesome, but 33 rounds of 9mm is better in my opinion.

That's awesome. I special ordered the Performance Center V Comp 627 and I can't wait until it shows up. I don't know enough about guns to be comfortable with the nuances of a semi auto, and prefer the simplicity/reliability of a revolver, but you're right about the Glock with the extra mag; that is some serious capacity.

My sister is pretty talented with sewing (among other things), and she helped me modify my shoulder holster to hold four speed loaders on the off side; so I roll with thirty rounds of 240 grain hollow points (not bad capacity for a wheel gun). I also like how all the extra weight helps balance out the feeling of carrying.

I got a LOBO IWB holster a while ago and have carried several 4" N- Frames and my 5" Heavy Duty in complete comfort under a sweatshirt.
I also have carried my 3" M29-3 in a belly band under a tucked in shirt. The shirt is bloused enough that it is undectectable.
If you know what you're doing, an N-Frame is easy to conceal.

Default People can also carry.....

People can also carry a .22 Derringer but it wouldn't be the first suggestion to come out of my mouth.

Ha. I'm such a terrible shot it probably wouldn't make a difference.

I knew there had to be some others with reasonable takes around here.

Seriously, the way people talk about N Frames, you'd think they were bazookas.

I'm a 59 YO with some old injuries coming home to roost. At 5'8"/175ish not a burly fellow either.
I've carried/concealed a S&W Mountain Gun and am fixing to tote a Mountain Revolver as soon as I acquire the holster.
Adding a set of Perry suspenders has made all the difference, for me. I'll probably use my Wilderness belt and a Lobo or Rosen pancake this go-round. Between the suspenders and belt, I can set the rig just where I want it, snug, but not uncomfortable.
I usually wear a t-shirt with a square-hemmed, untucked shirt over that. Works fine and so far, none the wiser, including many LEO friends and associates.

While an N is not an everyday carry, I try to have a holster on hand if the mood strikes. Just got my enhanced Avenger, for my M21, from Lobo the other day. Use a good belt and it is very manageable.

Though I must admit that I did have my 342 Ti in my pocket for the State Park woods walk yesterday. Macinaw, we all like steel but those lightweights sure do serve the purpose. That is a nice set up.

One of my co-workers, a big, tall guy, carried a 6" or 6 1/2" Model 29 concealed off duty in a shoulder holster. One winter, I did carry a 4" 29 off duty. Too big for me personally. I much prefer a flatter semi-auto or J-frame, etc.

BTW, .44Mag. ammo, even 240 JHP, is REALLY penetrative where unarmored humans are concerned...

Any way you can post a picture of your rig? I also like shoulder holsters and I am interested to see how she modified it.

I trundle along with either a Model 27 3 1/2" or more recently, a sawed off .455 HE converted to 45 ACP in a Dave Keith belt holster ever day in cold weather.

Just for the heck of it back in the late 70s I concealed carried a Model 29 4’’ in a strong side belt holster for a month... Now at that time I was 5’11 240# and had enough drape to hide the gun.
To the best of my knowledge it was never seen by anyone that might have had a concern. I live in the people’s republic of NY and know of a few “man with a gun” calls because someone saw a gun on a person not in a uniform.

It was loaded like Dirty Harry said with decent .44 SPECIAL loads not the full house Magnums. I found the gun a bit much for comfortable carry and was very concerned that it would “print” but I never had a problem. I did this just for a test and afterwards I went back to my 1911 .45. To me it was easier to conceal and not quite as cumbersome as the 29.

Carried that .45 for decades and then 11 months ago got XDs.45 for daily carry. As soon as it comes back from Springfield and I make sure it’s reliable it will be carried and the 1911 goes back to its retirement in the safe. The older I get the smaller large caliber gun is what I want to carry!

I carry a 2 3/4" 310 in a Simply Rugged pancake quite often. Needs nothing but an untucked shirt to conceal it.

Much depends on the job intended.
What advantage is gained from packing an N frame?
Well I would say accuracy, range penetration and power are the assets.
The old N frames served the Highway Patrols of out nation well in the past. In three and a half up to six inches im many calibers. Mostly .357 I think.
They were favored for use against barriers and what the 158 grain .357 would and could do. If in a situation where you are not able to take a long gun along I would opt to pack a 4 inch N since it would do its job at a greater range than most semi autos out there. Not that extended range defense use is very common but it could happen in a rural setting or even in urban America. Thoughts of the Texas Tower sniper come to mind. The officers had 38s and shotguns and the assign was pretty well out of range. Civilians grabbed the deer guns from their trucks and pinned the sniper down and saved some lives. A model 27 would have been handy or even a 29.
I like my Glock too but sometimes it won't serve the task at hand. Well maybe a 10mm could but I don't even know anyone carrying one today. I traded mine many years back. There were no concealment holsters available for it then. If they were it was a secrete.
If my wife ever packs her 4 inch nickle M 58 I will post it here. I will be giving it to her on her 41st birthday next April.

I have carried a 3" 629 IWB when it was all I had to carry. I carried it in a Simply Rugged Sourdough Pancake. Really wasn't bad but only carry it hiking now that I have smaller and lighter options available.

I rotate several guns for EDC. With cool weather and appropriate garments, I've often carried a 4" M28, a 4" M25-5, and a M58.

I used to be "burly" and manly and all that other macho stuff. Then I got old and all that vigorous stuff from my youth caught up with me (LOL). I still carry an N-frame most of the time but it is this one:

Light weight and fits in the Murse (my name for a man purse) from Maxpidition.

It amazes me at the amount of people who talk about lighter weight is needed edc or you will not carry every day.
Percentage of usa citizens 20 and over that are over weight 69.2% through 2009-2010
Perhaps if people carried less fat they could carry more steel.

I carry the N-Frame more than any other handgun, usually a mountain gun, 329 PD or one of my 5". Concealed in a Kramer OWB horsehide pancake holster, heavy gun belt and suspenders by better-S-penders. The Kramer holds the gun tight against my hip and is easily concealed by a vest.
In Alaska while guiding I use a "thumb break flap holster" in the cross draw position. This keeps the gun handy to either hand, yet out of the way.
I think cylinder width of the N-Frame as my main deterrent to daily concealed carry. They just don't conceal as easily as a 1911 or my 642.
So if I'm in town and don't need the range and power of the N-Frame I'll carry something else.

Although I usually carry a Colt Commander I was out in Oregon and Idaho for a month this summer and just brought one handgun...a 4" 57.

Started off with a Kramer Horse hide IWB holster and later a DeSantis Speed Scabbard but after a few days went to carrying it the way I have always ended up...tucked in behind the left hip with butt forward...no holster.

Have been carrying guns that way since getting my first CC license in Connecticut in 1970. Everything from a 2" Model 60 to a 6.5" 29-2. The only gun I won't carry that way is one of the "Safe-Action" semis like a Glock or XD.

In very little time I just forget the gun is there...

My routine urban concealed carry gun is one of my 5" government size 1911s with a spare magazine. I sometimes conceal carry my 4" Colt Python for nostalgia with two speed loaders. My rural carry gun is either my Glock G20 SF 10mm or my FNH FNX-45T with two spare fifteen round magazines. My concealed carry gun for the woods is my 4" S&W 29-2 with two speed loaders. My open carry guns for the woods are my 6" Colt Trooper, 8 3/8" S&W 29-2, or my 8" Colt Anaconda with two speed loaders.

I'm sure cbr will disagree or at least find fault with a comment from an old fat man, but my experience has been that it is the guys over 6' tall and generally over 200-250 pounds who are more likely to carry full size, steel guns.

LoL. I do not find fault nor disagree you are likely right "most" probably are. Personally i am 5'10, 172lbs but i am sure i am a minority.
I just like big guns, they seem to fit my hands better which makes.them easier to shoot.

I've occasionally carried my Model 21 in a pancake type holster and found no serious problems. But I'm 6'2" and about 210

if anyone remembers what the old safariland shoulders holsters were like, I used a 4in. and a 6in. to carry n-frames back in the day. when wearing a coat both were invisible. 5'10 and 245lbs in those days. a couple of lbs. more now.

Back in the day, I used to carry my 25-2 (6 1/2") didn't even take the target grips off. Full moons in strong side speed loader carrier. Just to see if I could. I was a heck of a lot thinner then.
I tried my 5" 27 in a similar rig.
My buddy used to carry his 6" 28 on duty & off. He got busted on a lot when he first started carrying it... jokes about how long to clear leather? He had to carry it (uniform) in a high ride holster when everyone else was using drop loop holsters in order to sit in the patrol but he was just as fast to his first shot & was about the highest qualifying score.

Thumbs up

One of the advantages to being a bigger guy. At 6'1"/250, a 4" Highway Patrolman on me is like a snub K-frame on a welter- or middleweight.

I have a model 58 with Fuzzy Farrant stocks with no palm swell that my buddy had made. He used to carry it in a upside down shoulder holster made by Safariland with a pouch for 2 speed loaders on the off side. When I carry the gun today I use a Desantis strong side belt holster with a good belt and never had trouble with the weight. I could be called burly as I'm 6' tall and weigh in at 275#.
p/s my favorite cc gun is my 642 in a Nemisis pocket holster.

Default N frame carry

Have carried three N frames during the past 30 years concealed, a model 58 despurred, and a 4" 29/despurred & more recently a LH M-24 RB....I can carry these guns IWB with a polo shirt or button up shirt with shirt tails out and not be noticed.....when the weather cools off as it has now....I wear fleece jackets or hoodies, carry OWB with a good pancake and all is well. Not petite either - 6'1" 250 lbs.

Default New gips on the 27-2

I haven't carried it outside home yet.
Just got the Simply Rugged Cumberland yesterday, I think it will work better than I thought. Rob dose great work.
The grips are Executioner aka Grasshorns which replaced the Ajax "ivory"

27-2 28-2.jpg

Cumberland1.jpg

27-2E2.5.jpg

The 4 inch would pack as easy but concealing target grips will take a coat for sure.
I did carry a 4 inch 28-2 back in 1975 it was not easy my other option was a .36 High Standard Griswold and Gunnison which I did carry before I was 21.

I have a 28-2 Highway Patrolman with in 4" . I have never concealed carried it. I love the way the gun shoots and spend more range time with it that any of the others. I like to have it in the truck as a second gun, but carry a Shield. Living in Florida there are not many times I am wearing a sweater or jacket. More often wearing shorts and a t-shirt year round. Khaki's and a golf shirt to work. The Shield fits in my right pocket inside a DeSantis holster.

I have that same holster for a 2.5" Colt Diamondback. It's the only thing I carry OWB, and I love it, but I usually do IWB.

Here's my 5" 627 V Comp in a Simply Rugged that was actually made for my 5 1/2" Redhawk, but works/fits just fine with the S&W too. I've carried the Redhawk A Plenty in this holster, and the S&W just disappears when the T shirt gets untucked. Hardly even know it's there. I have a number of Rob's holsters, and they all work fantastic for me. When I'm visiting the LGS and some customer is talking about how they need something small and light so they can conceal and carry it, they have me show them my carry rig. Dropped jaws are the norm. (I'm a fairly average size guy, not big and burly at all)

pic taken before I dumped the Hogues.

For me the key is a holster that pulls the grips in tight to the body, which the SR's do VERY well. After that, the rest is a breeze.

I have a few N frames I carry for different occasions. the biggest one is this 625-3 4" 45acp and the smallest is the 625-10 2" 45acp.

I also carry this nasty 3" 629

I also use this 2.625" 627 when in the mood.

Big gun. Big holster.

Not big man.

Conceals well but I don't carry it often.

I most often carry a 1911 in a similar holster.
