Default 629 explodes

This is my first post on any forum. I shot one round out of my 629-3 last Sunday with no issues. The second shot made a very loud BANG. This is the result. I was not hurt.
I sent a picture to Smith and Wesson and they are sending me a shipping label to ship them the revolver.
Thought you guys would like to see the picture.

Any idea what caused it? Factory ammo? reloads?

Good grief man. Glad you weren't hurt.

That looks like what happens when a double charged reload go off. Were they reloads?

It's a left handed revolver, those all blow up. Seriously, glad you are unhurt. Joe

So, handload or factory.

I see you have one of those rare left handed 629's.

I think that this is a new one. Reloads?

Is your hand OK?

We handgunners are VERY lucky, even luckier than the people who stand next to us.

Something smells fishy here.

New member. Posts a controversial post with a strange backwards picture, then no more comments when the questions are fast piling up, and yet his logged in light is on?

That is definitely not the one that was going around for the least few years on this board and most others. I just compared the pictures.

Trick or not, I don't know. But the fact that the OP has not responded to concerns expressed speaks volumes. These events just cannot happen unless there is a great overload of a fast burning propellant such as Bullseye. Which indicates great carelessness or stupidity in reloading practices.

Its just been one hour since the original post.
Some of us don't spend all our time at the keyboard.
We may yet get more details.

You mean you can't just fill the case with powder and pack it down with the bullet?

It's an ammo problem. S&W is not going to cover it. Stick with factory loads by American companies.
If something goes wrong, you will at least have some recourse.
Stay away from reloads unless you make them yourself.

Possibility of the gun being among the SN's listed in the 624/629 recall for the cylinders made from out of spec stainless steel?

Saw this happen to a guy standing next to me at the range. Was in a Judge shooting a Colt 45 cartridge. Cut his hand up really bad where he had to go to the emergency room.

The Colt 45 cartridge had to have had a double powder charge.

Default Wow

Good evening, As I said, I am new to the forum thing. I read this forum quite a it because I find it useful. I didn't notice that the picture was in a mirror. That picture is from my buddies camera. I will post more pictures of the revolver when I get back to my computer. I am on my kids I pad. Trust Me. It happened! I always buy quality rounds and shoot reloads from a trusted person. I shot one round and I didn't see hole in the paper 30 feet away. The recoil felt normal. I cocked the trigger. I fired. It felt like a huge flash and BANG. Something hit me in the side of the head but it was minor. The round next to the one I was firing was severely dented and I dropped it in the grass. I went back to look for that round and other pieces but I can't find them. It is in an old wood yard that is growing in. Anyway, I probably won't have time to check this forum out for a while. Hope some of you don't mind and those of you that get all wound up because someone isn't on the computer all day should get out and do some shooting, hunting, or scouting.

I don't believe anyone got all wound up, but this sort of thing seems to go around on the forums a few times a year, and it's usually either a forum troll or someone posting a thread about what they "heard" vs what actually happened. They come on and post, then disappear, and are here only to try to stir the pot.

I believe you can understand the skepticism.

Glad you didn't get hurt.

I would just add here though, that the term "quality handloads" is a subjective title at best, especially when they are someone else's that you have no quality control over.

Ditto on the OP not getting hurt. I suspect a light load would have not had the same recoil as a standard load, and if one round lodged part way in the forcing cone the cylinder would have not be able to advance to the next chamber. A bullet lodged farther down the barrel with a full power round following it may bulge (or even crack) the barrel, but I think the cylinder would have been spared because the pressure would have vented out the barrel/cylinder gap.

I think the photo points to a major pressure overload, probably by a major powder overcharge or the bullet being pushed back in the case and compression of a standard charge, possibly by recoil from the first round.

New member. Posts a controversial post with a strange backwards picture, then no more comments when the questions are fast piling up, and yet his logged in light is on?

Let's not condemn the new guy yet.
Look at his join date - April 2013. His first post came six months later.
Are trolls that patient? Wait six months to start trouble? I doubt it.

By the way, this is NOT the same gun that has floated around here before. That gun had an IL, this one doesn't.
Here's a pic of that one

That's to bad, no one likes to wreck a gun.
I'd really like the details on the load.

We covered the "other gun" question in several posts above.

Not condemning, just questioning the post(see my last post above).

Ok, riddle me this: who keeps their guns, much less their blown up ones, and their EGGS in front of the SAME MIRROR?
