It Finally Arrived, Model 640 Pro, The Ultimate CCW
I had this revolver on order for more than a year and a half, and it finally arrived. I have always been looking for that perfect CCW and I think S&W finally came out with the one. The revolver is all stainless steel, with just enough weight, yet not to heavy, to control recoil, and still be comfortable to carry all day. The 3 dot white outline night sights give a great sight picture in all light conditions, and the hammerless design is perfect for carrying in a pocket. The double action is very smooth, making for good steady repeat shots. I use Hornady Critical Defense Ammo in both 38 Special, and 357 Magnum. The revolver being designed to use full moon clips is also a big plus as it makes loading and unloading a breeze, as well as being able to carry extra ammo very easily. Currently for no jacket weather I use an Uncle Mike's pocket holster, and picked up a DeSantis belt holster specially designed for this revolver for jacket weather. If you are looking for an all around great CCW weapon Smith and Wesson hit a home run with this Model 640 Pro.
I currently have Craig Spegel "Centennial" grips on the revolver, and plan to buy CT laser grips in the future for it.

THAT is a nice piece. Had a 640, not the Pro, and had to sell it. Have been kicking myself ever since. That IS the ultimate ccw, you are right.
Enjoy and please post more photo's so I can enjoy it through you.
Frank.

I know , I know, extremely old post, but I came across it, and have been carrying the the 640 Pro for a few month now. Carries great and knowing I have 5 shots of .357 is very comforting. Tried the 3" 686, too big for me, now its a nightstand gun. .45 shield gets some carry every once in awhile too but I am not comfortable having one in the chamber with the safety on, its more comforting to me having a double action pull and not having to worry about a safety. I highly recommend the 640 Pro for any one considering it for concealed carry.
Again, sorry for bringing up an old post, sure someone will give me some heat for doing so.

I don't have the Pro, but I love my 640. I have to agree they are great carry guns!

Drawing attention from 640 owners, but that gun is not the same concept as the 640 Pro. If I was going to consider this gun and wasn't caring that much about moon clips, I would be looking also at the new Kimber 6-shooter, which I have had the opportunity to shoot. Neither of them has any business being fired with 357 Magnum ammo. These are glorified 38s in my view, and I have read lots of mention that others shoot only 38s in these small guns.
What is "ultimate" depends on how you dress and whether your weight and then body type is under control. That determines how your pants or shorts fit and whether having a gun in a pocket is remotely possible.

It depends upon how recoil sensitive you are. While not something I'd want to shoot all day, I don't find 357 in the small j's anything I can't handle.

I have a model 60, and model 637. I prefer external hammers. My carry pistol is a model CS 45. You have a very nice revolver there.

Old thread, but I'll add to it since the 640 Pro is still in production and the info is still relevant.
I've owned a 640 Pro for several years and it is a good option for those who want to carry a J-frame.
There are several functional options the Pro Series model gives you over the the basic 640. These are: Cylinder factory cut for moon clips, tritium night sights, and as a -1 version it has no lock. Here is my take on these differences.
Moon Clips. These allow you to quickly load and unload the gun. Swollen, fired cases easily come out together and five fresh rounds drop right in. Five rounds in a moon clip are smaller than five rounds in a speed loader, thus smaller for carry... It is faster to load also. However, the spring steel is thin and easily bent if you are not careful. Another limitation is you cannot "top off" a few rounds. It is five or nothing.
Three Dot Tritium Sights. These are the best factory J-frame sights I've seen, just not perfect. The tritium dots are bright and easy to pick up with the eye and each dot is surrounded by a white outline for day use.
I find the rear white outlines are too big when compared to the front. This actually slows my front sight acquisition. To fix this, I took a black sharpie to the rear white rings and now my eyes go straight to the front sight.
I understand the basic 640 can be easily fitted with a XS Big Dot front sight which might be as good or an even better day/night sight option than offered on the Pro Series.
My 640 Pro also wears a set of CT laser grips... If you aren't cheating, you aren't trying hard enough.
No Lock -1 Model. Enough said... For some of us a defensive firearm with a lock is a deal breaker.
Ramblings... Light, quick, and as a revolver it is 98.9% reliable. Although I rarely carry 357 Magnum rounds due to the extra recoil and blast, it is an ammo option which I select when headed to the woods. Those who aren't revolver guys might prefer a sub-compact semi-auto. For approximately the same weight and size you get twice the round count and easier reloads.
Everything is a compromise...
