S&W Model 681 NYSP stamped
I am a retired NYSP trooper who was issued a S&W Model 681 when I first came on the job in 1983. When this revolver was retired around 1991 I had the opportunity to purchase. For various reasons I did not. Does anyboby have ideas or suggestions on where to purchase one? Thanks

Too bad you did not buy it then. I think you should post a "Want to buy" add in the wanted section of this forum. Welcome to the place that will help you spend your money ) Kyle

Yeah, this needs to be clarified.
OP: A specific NYSP 681 might be a long hunt, but otherwise a decent used 681 is pretty easy to find on gun auction sites and online retailers.

Is there a trooper's association? Does it have a newsletter? Reach out to that sort of group and see if there are any who know where to find one.

Thanks everyone & yes it is the 681, NYSP stamped. Looking back I just didn't have the money, new house, young family & low salary. I certainly regret the decision so I am hoping for another chance. I appreciate everyone's input and I know the revolver will feel good in my hand and the uniform would not even come close to fitting me.
I also appreciate the offers of PMs if one is seen.
Fraternally, Jack

I came on the job in "83 too, and I think ours was the first class to be issued 681's. The first one I was issued was a shooter and I really liked it. After everyone in the division had been issued 681's there was a recall (recoil shield? recoil pad? something like that) and guns were sent back to S&W by Troop with my Troop being the first. The replacement guns were not marked "NYSP". When the NYSP marked guns were repaired they were sent to the next Troop in line for modification and I never got a NYSP one re-issued to me.
The non-marked gun shot 6" to the left of POA at 25 yards and when they were offered for sale I asked if I could get my original marked one back and was told no so I opted not to buy. Wish i had been a little more insistent on getting a marked one as I too have been looking for one to give my son who just took the entrance exam. Both his parents and his maternal grandfather carried 681's.
Jack, good luck with your hunt. If you find two NYSP 681's, let me know. I'll do the same for you.

I have one I would sell. Model 681 NYSP stamped SS finish. Nice shooter. AAK#### serial numbered. M stamp so recall is done. Make reasonable offer and I'll consider it. Email me at [email protected]

Well....there you go. Seek and ye' shall find. I hope you guys make a deal and both wind up happy. I was holding-out for a dash 3 and the only -3's I have seen were stamped S.A.P.R. (San Antonio Parks and Recreation). I let one pass, but did not let the next one pass. Got it for a very fair price IMHO. The 681's started coming out of the wood-work in droves and there are plenty of imports on the auction sites now. Finding one unmarked is likely a "rare-and-maybe possibility". Finding one marked like you want is a practical miracle.

Anyone know what fair market value is for a 681 NYSP stamped gun? Some say only 500 made. Some say 4000 to 5000 made. Just curious. It's in 8 out of 10 condition as it has been used. It's tight and shoots very well. No play or wear visible other than grips and holster polish on the nose. I believe they are original grips as well. Others posted have same look and made by pachmyr. Any insight is appreciated. Thanks.

I'll put-in my 2-cents worth....which may be about what it's worth. I DO NOT want to step between another man and his deal. When it gets right down to buying any gun that I really want....I do not let the cost of a tank-of-gas for my pick-up get in the way.
I think just about any LEA marked 681 is going to be fairly rare in terms of numbers. Finding out how many were stamped for any particular LEA may be difficult, or even impossible. It comes down to how bad you want that gun and how "reasonable" the seller is going to be knowing you want that particular gun.
Gunpoker is flush with 681's....mostly C.A.I. imports and the ask is ranging from $475 shipped up to $650 plus shipping. These are the ND and dash-1's. Many have been sold for "around" $525.
I would place a gun that was never exported (not a C.A.I. import) a notch above one that was imported, which brings one back to the LEA marked guns. I recently purchased a dash-3 (last of the bunch) LEA marked 681 for $475 plus $25 shipping. It had been well-fired, but is as tight-as-a-tick. I think one can assume that any of these guns have been well-fired....so you're not getting a virgin here. I have a friend that had to send his back to Smith for an overhaul. He had purchased one of the C.A.I imports for $512 plus shipping, but paid Smith $140 to fix it.
JMHO, but I think an LEA marked 681 in good condition should fall in the $550 range. The -3 I got for $475 had a buy-it-now for $650. The only reason I got it for $475 is because there are a ton of import 681's for sale at that price.

Thanks. That's pretty much what I was thinking and just wanted a fair price range. I had no starting point as I traded a 22 mag and 17 HMR for it and have about 500 into it. Give or take.

I think it's just too difficult at the moment to put a price on one much above $500. Too many for sale below that. Granted, the vast majority of those are the C.A.I. imports and I would rather not have one that had made a round-trip across the big pond. On the other hand, I have owned C.A.I. imports in other guns/models that were every bit as good as a non-import. They all left the same back door at the factory. However....somebody show me one unmarked NIB with the papers and we got a whole 'nuther ball game.

I think it's classy and commendable of you to step up and offer to help a fellow member obtain a revolver deeply meaningful to him, and both reasonable and more than gracious to seek simply a fair price and no more.
I hope this deal works out, and works out well with the both of you walking away happy.

There are about 45 of them on Gunpoker as of this moment. I don't mean NYPD's....just 681's in general. One is a buy-it-now for $489.

That gun looks pretty much pristine. Did anybody notice the winning bidder had one (1) feedback entry.
Man-o-man.....you never know. I plan to go clean-up my S.A.P.R. and treat it with more respect.

You might get more interest if you post on the WTS thread.
