Dumb question but ?
I have a 638 and a 442 and have read that if you wipe down the carbon steel (442) guns at the end of the carry there would be no worry about rust. That is great information but my question is what should I wipe the gun down with? Is there something I need to avoid or is a clean oily cloth good?
Sorry for the stupid question but all the j-frames I have ever owned were the stainless/alloy or just stainless.
Thanks in advance, Frank.

For many years I have used a Silicone Gun Cloth to wipe mine down & have never had issues with rust.

I have used the silicone gun cloths, too. But I always seem to return to an old sheepskin wipe with a very light touch of universal gun grease.

Silicone socks and very light oiling. No corrosion I can detect.

I think you are in good company. I saw a Hickok45 YouTube video on gun cleaning. He is a big fan of Ballistol . . . can you say stinky?
Revolver Cleaning - YouTube
But, the point he makes near the end of his presentation is that he always wipes his pistols off with a rag that is "lightly soaked" with Ballistol to eliminate "rusty fingerprints" just before putting it in the safe.

Frank, I apply gun grease to a small soft cloth to wipe all my guns. I still use old Hoppes and Rig brands and I'll assume that new gun grease is even better. I purchased my Model 36 no dash new in 1967. I believe the gun grease has contributed to maintaining a new looking appearence. I have kept it in a sheep skin holster, wool inside, ever since . It was my first CC but for that I used an Uncle Mike's holster.

Hard to beat RIG (universal gun grease) on sheepskin for wiping down guns. I've used it for years with great success never had a gun rust on me. One small can will last years, just build up a residue on the sheep wool and after cleaning your gun wipe it down with a RIG Rag great for stored guns also.
Thanks,

Besides wiping with a silicone cloth, I like to brush mine with a shaving brush that is lightly oiled. I put a thin line of oil (Hoppes #9 Gun Oil) on the gun and pick it up with the brush and spread it all around. The brush allows you to get into uneven areas and into corners and creases.

How does it smell?
I usually stick to WeaponShield because it has received the "sniff of approval" from SWMBO.
Oh, and you may be shooting more often. No firearms get wiped down "daily" here.

Someone suggested Renaissance Wax to me a few threads ago when I posted that my EDC had gotten some rust on it. I have some on the way this week actually, but a lot of guys on here swore by it!

Thank you all for your information. With the j-frame 442 I believe I only need to concern myself with the cylinder and barrel? I will also wipe down the rest of the gun, but I believe these are the only parts that are carbon steel.
Thank you all again, Frank.

The smells not so bad. It's doesn't smell as good as Hoppes#9 but it's not so bad either.
I wipe down my 442 carry gun daily when it comes out of it's holster.
