Default 29-3 With A Prefix Serial Number

I saw one of these posted in another thread that was identified as a Classic Hunter. Is has a 6" full under-lug barrel, adjustable front sight and un-fluted cylinder. It came with Hogue grips. Another thing that got my attention is the serial number: A709xxx (not an N prefix). My questions, is this a Lew Horton special, and what is it worth? The only flaw is a small bit of holster wear on the right side of the barrel. Otherwise it's in really great condition.

Featured on the Cover of the July 1988 "Handguns" magazine. Originally came with Hogue rubber fingergroove grips and limited production of 5,000. Suggested retail price of $475.50.

That's the gist of what I got from the article. Nothing about Lew Horton, just S&W. Also nothing about the serial number in the article.

Your price seems good to me. I would expect these to sell in the $700-$1,000 price range.

Seems a fair price. Go shoot and enjoy it!

Looks like a nice gun and the price was right.

I saw one of those in a nearby gun shop about a month ago and it was priced at $850 or $875, I think. They had it priced a little higher than a 5" full-lug 29-4, one of the 500 ordered by Hill Country Distributors back in 1989.

I'm now convinced it is a Classic Hunter. The gun is drop dead gorgeous and feels really good in my hand. Looks like the next stop is my local range.

I still wonder about the A prefix on the serial number. Just a technical thing, I guess.

I've read on this forum that you can call Lew Horton with the serial # and they'll tell you if it's one of theirs.
