Best wadcutters for .38 special?
I have a model 36 .38 special and I was wondering what are some good standard pressure wadcutters? I've read a bit about using wadcutters for SD and would like to try some out at the range but they seem pretty hard to find. Any info would be greatly appreciated! I know some people swear by hollow points but I'm not looking for a debate, just some resources for good wadcutters, thanks!!

In my J frame I carry the Double Tap which launch a hard cast double end wadcutter out of a 2 inch at an honest 750 FPS. very easy to control and plenty of penitration. Midway Usa has them.
Good luck

In the J frame snubs the 158gr lswc are as good as any for target and SD if you do not want to shoot a +p loading.
The standard 148 HBwc or the BBwc will also work better than tossing rocks..............and make a great light target load.
Now if you have a Big old heavy K frame, you just stepped up into the main event. Pull the gloves off and let er rip............
Any 38 special ammo will work in these and ask for more.
PS;
Don't hold back on 158gr LRN if you find them..............great J frame practice loads but not good for SD use.

I use Fiocchi 38 wadcutter 148 gr in my K frame, almost like shooting a 22lr, very little recoil but good for papertargets up to 100 yards.

I reload mine. I use a Speer 148 gr. HBWC over a change of HP-38 powder, with CCI small pistol primers. My load is very, very accurate in my revolvers. I load a lot of them, and I shoot a lot of them. For me, it just about as much fun as a man can have with his clothes on.

I shot a model 52 in competition for years and HAD to develop a very accurate load. The gun required "flush seated" wadcutters so that they fed in the magazine. I used 148gr. DEWCs and tried just about every one I could find or cast. The best seemed to be the ones I got from MidKansas (now out-of-business) but are very much like the ones available from Midway (Hunters Supply (Pb) or Ranier (plated)). The load was and is 2.6gr -2.8gr. Bullseye.
This load works well in any .38 I have used….shot in this gun this week.

If your goal is to use a wadcutter round for SD then I suggest the Buffalo Bore 150 hard cast load. Comes out at around 900 fps from a 2" barrel and it's not Plus P.
For the record, that's the load I carry in my snubbies.

Atomic has some 38 special +P ammo loaded with reversed wad cutters.
38 Special +P
I have a few boxes of these, but haven't shot any yet.

Now that is one interesting-looking load! Might have to try a box of that myself...

That upside down HBWC trick is a very old one. The original Hydra-Shock load was this load, and they do not have to be heavily loaded for them to work. Those light charges of Bullseye, W-231, 700-X, or HP-38 will do the trick.

I use Berry's 148 gr copper-plated double-ended wadcutters DEWC.
38 / 357 plated pistol bullets

Please excuse the rookie for going slightly off-topic here, but what exactly is a "wadcutter"? I read the term a lot here, but don't really know what it means.

What a wadcutter bullet is
A cylindrical bullet that is flat on both ends or one end may have a deep hollow cavity that is loaded towards the powder. The bullet cuts a sharp, clean, full diameter hole in the paper target. Behind the target, the ground will be covered with little circles that are 'cut' from the target.
