Default Safe to Keep Rounds in Speed loader for storage?

Hey all,
I was just wondering if their is any safety concern in keeping rounds in a speed loader for storage? I have my 66-8 in a safe next to my bed with Safari Land speed loaders loaded with 38+P. I've never heard of any issues...just curious.

Best Regards,

-Greg

I see no issues with keeping ammo in a speed loader for long lengths of time.

So your 66 in the safe is also loaded?

I found my old duty rig in a box with 2 speed loaders I forgot to remove (I always carried 4). They had 38+Ps in them. They were there for 28 yrs., no problem with them. I have speed loaders for all of my revolvers and I keep them stored with ammo in them. I really don't see a problem with that at all.

You probably want to practice with them every so often.

No issues with the ammo.

The issue is whether you can use the reloaders adequately to make them useful

BTW, I recently washed and dried a loaded Safariland speedloader. Loader is fine. Not so sure about the ammo! The package stayed together throughout the ordeal.

No worries about long term ammo storage in speedloaders, either.

No problems at all. Just practice with them as they can sometimes be a bit tricky for guys who don't.

I can't "top" Topsarge, however I have 2 loaded speed loaders that I received with a Model 19 2 1/2" I purchased in 2000.

I forgot about the speed loaders until I found them about 2 months ago when looking thru a box of old holsters and such.

No problems noted with the loaders or ammo, so back in to storage they went for further long term testing, however after reading Topsarges post, I'm guessing my experiment is now irrelevant.

So, in summery, those 2 speed loaders have been loaded and in my possession since 2000 (16 yrs) and I have no idea how long they had been loaded before I made the purchase, but I'd say you're "good to go".

I've washed and dried more speed strips and speedloaders than I care to admit. Never any harm to the loaders and the ammo always went bang when used at the practice range afterwards.

If you stop and think about the boxes ammo comes in, putting it into speed loaders probably protects it as well or better at the case head and primer. If you don't see any verdigis/corrosion on the bullet itself or corrosion on the exposed part of the shell, you're probably good to go. The usual cautions about extreme heat and humidity apply of course, but ammo in the factory boxes would suffer just as much. I've got some old FBI Federal +P that is older than many of our readers and some of it stays in the speed loaders with my 60-4 that I'm willing to bet my life on. YMMV, though.

I have a couple of speed loaders and speed strips for mine. They are very handy and I like the speed strips when I carry a revolver on occasion.
