Need information on revolver
New on the forum .My dad gave me his smith and Wesson .38. I want to know whats the price range on the revolver and around what time it was made. On the right side of the barrel it says 38 s.&w special ctg. and the left side of the barrel says smith & Wesson. Under the butt it has the serial number which is 96K2176 and is a six rounder. Also, on the side near the rounder I think it says c16, on the bottom of that it has 11738. Thanks for reading. Hope you guys can help me out. Thanks again

Looks like a Model 15-4 4" from around 1981.
Should have "Mod 15-4" stamped on the frame with the cylinder open.

Thanks. Yes just checked it out and it does have mod 15-4 stamped on the frame with the cylinder open. Perhaps do you know what's the price range on these?

I paid $400 on Gunbroker recently for a 15-4 a couple of years newer than yours. Values vary around the country. I may have paid a bit too much. Mine's just shooter grade, nothing special.

Sounds good. The one my dad passed on to me is in excellent condition. He told me that he used it only once.

It would likely sell around here at $500-$550 or so in the condition described. Elsewhere it could be wildly different.

15-4 Value
In Kalifornia, an example like in the photo would probably be at least $500.

$500 all day long in my neck of the woods too.
Shoot it, enjoy it and take care of it. They will last a lifetime with the right care and feeding.

The M-15 is a great revolver. I shoot mine on a fairly regular basis and I love it. I know you will enjoy yours.

Model name, BTW, is Combat Masterpiece. Shoot it with some good quality factory ammo, and you'll see why.
Enjoy that fine piece.
