I believe the L frame 357 is called the 686 and 586. I think they even make it with fixed sites in the 681 and 581.

Sent from my Motorola Flip phone.

Surprised their is only a two ounce difference in weight between it and the MG, assuming same grip material? Trade that for one less round?

Will it ever come to California? Maybe I'll have to wait until I'm in Nevada to see one.

Paul 105,

Could you please turn the gun upside down and take a picture from the bottom. I want to see how the ball detent locks into the frame.

In CA you can also remove the DA sear and then it becomes a SA revolver and will be exempt from the roster. You just need to find an FFL that knows this and will do it for you. The guys at Calguns.net can usually help with finding an FFL in your area that will do the transfer.

Is .44 in L frame something like .357 in a K frame?

I believe that is not the case, it needs to be made a Single Shot not Single Action...Therefore you have to do other Modifications so the Cylinder will not Turn...

No, it's SAO, not single shot. Here's a quick read on it: How To Import Off Roster S&W to California!! Instructions - Calguns.net

As of March 6, it still is not on the California Approved List. The next time I'm in Nevada, I'll try to find a store that has one. If I like what I see, then I'll see what it takes to get one.

As much as I love my 696, I always wanted it to have a 4 inch barrel. I even acquired a 4 inch barrel from a 686 that I considered having rebored to .44 caliber.

I have a 629 Mountain Gun with the stock(Hogue?) grips that came on it. The stock grips on the MG leave the backstrap mostly uncovered.

I also looked at a model 69 today. The stock rubber grips on it wrap around the grip frame completely. I suspect that, based on this alone, the 69 may be a bit more comfortable to shoot at least in completely stock form.

I've been meaning to track down a set of Pachymyar or other grips for my Mountain Gun that cover the backstrap completely to see if they might tame it down a little bit.
