Default Info on 13-3 Nickel 3 in (Drank the kool-aid, more pics added)

This is my first post in the revolver section so go easy on me. I was offered a trade today for this firearm. This won't be my only smith pistol, but will be my first revolver. Thr trade would a be a straight one for the 4013TSW I have listed in the classifieds.

The 13-3 is original owner with only 50 rounds of .38 spl throught it. Nickel and condition is close to 100%. No box unfortunately. It has a 3 inch barrel.

Would yall make this trade? I'm inclined to take it since .40 just isn't my scene.

Pics below. Thanks

Vince

I have a blue 13-3 in 3". I have factory grips and a Tyler T on it. It's become one of my favorites. To me, 3" and nickel is worth a premium. I don't know what a 4013TSW goes for, but I think I'd rather have a 3" nickel 13.

Make this trade. You were already getting rid of the 4013TSW anyway. If you haven't missed anything in your cosmetic and mechanical assessment of the 13-3, as described it's NRA "perfect" -- impressive to find, especially for the hugely sought after 3" version of the Model 13; nickel makes it all the more uncommon.

If the 13 turns out not to be the revolver for you, I guarantee that, again, as long as you've done your checks correctly and it's in the condition described, you will be able to sell it for significantly more than you're asking for the 4013TSW.

Trade...fast.

Just one warning.
Once you get it, you will be hooked.
This won't be your only revolver.
Take the plunge. The water is fine.

So I made the trade. Wow. What an amazing firearm...I cannot wait to shoot it. The condition is unbelievable. Very very close to 100%, timing and lockup is on point, as to be expected from a revolver that's seen 50 rounds. The former owner thinks the box and original grips are laying around too and will send them to me if/when he finds them.

Nickel sure is hard to photograph. And I thought being addicted to Smith semis was bad, now I may have a revolver problem

Each of us here bitten by this pernicious bug and on the perpetual hunt has (or will have) at least one story of the amazing find at the incredible price -- congrats, you just got yours.

Enjoy...and keep on the seller for that box and grips.

Vince:

I'm glad you made the trade. I have the blued steel and stainless steel (Modle 65) cousins of yours, and I really enjoy them. By the way, as I assume you already know, keep any solvents or bore cleaners, etc. that are used to remove copper away from your revolver, as those agents could damage the nickel plating. I use Break Free CLP (Cleans, Lubes, Protects) on my handguns as it works well and has nothing in it that would damage the finish on your handguns.

Congratulations.

Dave

A fine revolver. I gifted a blue 3" M13 to an ex-GF... when we broke up she declined to sell it back to me. So I consoled myself with a 3" M66.
I recommend BreakFree CLP very highly... the Dept Armorer noticed me using it & began buying it in gallons with a pump sprayer! When you shoot... before you shoot... wipe it down inside & out, including barrel & chambers leaving just a film. The firing residue will be on top of the film & much easier to clean up.

I'm a big fan of CLP, too -- it's my primary gun cleaner. A note of caution, though: leaving a fine film inside the bore or chambers before firing can increase pressures dangerously. Best to leave the gun with a film inside and out after cleaning, but running a dry patch through the bore and chambers just before shooting.

I fear you are in trouble. My 13-1 was the third revolver I purchased many years ago. I had to dig thru 35 revolvers to find it this morn. I'm down to 35 after giving some to my boys. It's a great revolver and it's cold outside so the can of Ren Wax has come out.

So what would yall say is the best way to preserve the nickel finish? I only use CLP break free on all of my firearms so I am off to the right start in that respect. I saw that someone mentioned Ren Wax, is this a good option?

Also, are there combat grips available at a more reasonable price than the Keith Browns. Don't get me wrong, those are gorgeous but I can't fathom paying $400+ for some grips.

I will look at the serial number tonight and report in on that, would love to get an idea what year it was made.

CLP, store it in non-corroding material, never leaving it too long in storage without a fresh wipedown, and don't make it a carry piece -- these are the best ways to preserve the finish.

The Keith Browns combats are modeled after S&W original factory combat grips, which can periodically be found on the classifieds here or on eBay for far less than the lovely but for most of us cost prohibitive KBs.

Factory combats are excellent grips to my hands, but you may also want to look at factory round butt targets -- also known as "banana" -- grips, in both smooth and checkered, which I have found to be almost perfect for 3" K-frames.

EDIT: Just remembered our own Kurac, who makes gorgeous grips, has begun making combats styled after S&W factory; I imagine K-frame versions aren't far behind. Have a look: http://smith-wessonforum.com/accesso...#post137640788

Sure would look and feel nice with a pair of Grasshorn Stags and maybe a Tyler grip adapter.
I only have e 3 inch and it is a 7 shot 686 form a forum member , it wears Rodgers grips. Same as Safariland DA combats. Not real pretty but feels good. Other K frame is a 66 with Gasshorns.
I need a 3 inch K now dang it.
Rodgers grips on the 66 before Grasshorns.
