Default I'm liking my 27-2 transition revolver *pics*

I recently got it in my head that I needed another 27-2. I only have one 27-2 with an 8 3/8" barrel and a pre-27 with an 8 3/8" barrel. I was bummed when I saw what the prices were for nice specimens.

I ended up snagging one that is super nice with the correct box (numbered to the gun). No tools or papers. I have a set of papers from a 27-2 that may work. I also have the screwdriver and cleaning rod. I can probably scrounge up a mop and brush.

This is one of those tweener guns. It has a special order code of 3336 which may mean that is was made on the 336th day of 1983. The 27-3s were coming out. Mine has the 27-2 frame with recessed cylinder, but the barrel is not pinned. I'm not sure what that does to the value, but I'm not worried about it. For me, it's cool to have such a model. There is just something really neat about a 6" nickel 27.

Very pretty in nickel !

Your 27-2 is a "Transitional" gun with features of the P&R 27-2 and NON P&R 27-3 revisions.
You said you weren't sure what the transitional status did to your guns value,
IMO it doesnt help but but consider this,
Before 1960 the four screw Model 27 had RH ejector rod threads,
In 1960 the Model 27-1 had the 4 screw frame of the 27 (no dash) and the LH threaded cylinder/ ejector rod of the Model 27-2 that would appear 1 year later (kinda suggesting the dash 1 revision was a transitional model )
The 27-1 fetches a hefty premium because it was made in low numbers and collectors want rare revisions ,
On the other hand in the case of the transitional 27-2 it does not add a premium because S&W didn't add a revisional change ,
If you understand that P&R features are considered more desirable among S&W purists & collectors removing one of those features (pinned barrel) = less desirable.

Perhaps if S&W had given the transitional 27-2s their own revision those one year transitional 27-3's might have been considered rare and collectable,
Who knows if 30 years from now collectors will look for rare "Transional 27-2's"...only time will tell.

Yeah, I kinda expect that it would be considered less desirable by today's collectors, but I also paid less for it and I think it's kinda cool. Who knows what the future will bring, but I'm not thinking it's rare and more valuable.

Thanks for the information.

Wink

I agree the transitional models between dash 2 and 3 are currently less "desirable". We are all conditioned to put a high value on P&R. However, I have a 4"bbl. 27-2 nickel gun that is a transitional. I'm just waiting for the market to begin "liking" these guns as unique and few in number.

Same here. If they don't become more desirable, I'm fine. I really like this gun.

The finish on this gun is incredible. The top of the barrel looks like it is jeweled. It's my first 27 in nickel.

I guess folks like the old guns better. Not a lot of interest so far. LOL.

For reference (if anyone does a search someday), below is the label on the box. I like that the newer 27's come with target grips, target hammer, and target trigger.

Can anyone confirm that the special order code is the ship date?

You definately caught the attention of a few transitional 4" owners including me.
Four inch 27-2 serial N 941017 with the same serial prefix that is also a transitional gun.

Nice! I see that yours has a ramp front sight. Is that because your barrel length is different?

Pictures don't do these beauties justice.

Beautiful 27. I had a 27-2 Nickle in 6" and did like it.

The Baughman ramp front sight on the shorter barreled guns was more for carrying and quicker drawing from the holster. It is named after the FBI agent who asked S&W to put it on his Registered Magnum.

The Patridge squared front sight is more for target shooting and is supposed to give a more precise front sight.

Cool

I believe the transitional models will be a collectible variation...someday. Here is my 28-2 6" barrel, Hogue grips. Its a nice shooter.
I sure like the 4" model that Engine49guy has shown us. Wow.
