Model 29-3 price check
Hello all! New to the forum and this is my first post.
I have been looking for a 44 mag revolver to use as a backpack/camp gun in Alaska and other places(would really like a 29). There is a 29-3 4" I could buy for just over $700 all in that is in great shape(95%+) with the original case and tools. Is this too much? I set out looking for a 29-2 as I like the counter-sunk feature and pinned barrel. The gun will see some use and be a regular shooter at the range with a fair amount of heavier loads. Curious to here your opinions...thanks for the help.

That's on the high end of "fair price" if it has the original wood grips. The pinned and recessed features do not affect the guns shootablity and you ARE going to carry it. Still, you will do better with a bit of patience.

My .02 cents. Unless your living on the interwebs, or have a friend that is hard up for money. The lower priced .44's go fast, real fast. I've been watching them for a couple months, I'm always too late to grab a low priced one. Also, that's what I paid for my 29-4. No regrets,,,

I gave $650 this summer for a 29-3 6" with wood grips but no box or paperwork. Might've paid a little much, but I don't regret it at all.

Got this one in a trade a few weeks ago, so price is inexact. After all, I would guess I'm in it for about $550 or so.
Its a good shooter, though some of the loads I developed for my 8-3/8" one are really brisk!

If you are going to carry outdoors, you might want to consider the 629. I think the price for that 29-3 is a little high. I paid $500 for a similar condition 6" last summer. Your location may cause prices to be higher. Still for your stated use I would go for a 629

A couple of months ago I bought a nice 29-3 with target stocks for $725 total. I might have paid too much but figure time and gas looking for something cheaper and I am probably ahead. The main thing is I had the money, I wanted it and I got it. Larry

In response to your initial question , I believe 700 is about right. A 29-2 would be nice, but nothing wrong at all with the -3.

This past summer I sold a 4" 29-3 in a private sale for $750, it had a great action, tight lock-up, no box or accessories. The buyer was satisfied, as was I.

Buy it, box, docs, and tools is a fair price. If I didn't already have one, I'd ask where it was for sale. They aren't getting cheaper.

When ever these opinion post are asked, there will always be those who advise waiting for what could be up to a year to save $50-$100 dollars on a cheaper one that comes along.More important than price is condition, and then quality and fit and finish. Always best to use your own judgement in these cases Then to ask others if you should. If the gun is singing to you then buy it. If not then pass and wait for another.

My opinion
Backpack/camp gun in Alaska=629
Fair amount of heavy loads = 629-3, 629-4
The price for the 29-3 is fair.
