I bought the second S&W 500 mag in the county I live in back in late 2004. It has sat in the safe ever since only seeing daylight maybe 8 times since purchased and remains unfired. Having fired a friends 1 time mine will remain in the dark. I did not care for the recoil at all. Yep,big wuss here.

I think I am on the same page as you, if the 500 won't do it then the 458 sure will.

S&W 500 recoil
It's not that bad. I've shot quite a few rounds out of my 500. I have a 6.5" barrel. Mine came from the performance center. You won't be double tapping anything unless you load it waaaay down and shoot the lightest bullet you can buy or cast. I prefer the Barnes 275 GR XBP. With 40.6 grains of H110 I get 1770 fps. The recoil is heavy but not abusive and certainly is not going to leave you with a strained or broken wrist. I shot 500 GR factory loads when I first got it. Again, pretty stout recoil, a lot of noise and a heck of a flame ball, but no serious damage to me.

It was a few weeks past that I took my Smith 6 1/2 44 to the range for the first time in years. Took along an old favorite load of 270 gr. Speer bullets over a max load of296. Once that was a really fun load! No more! My son is now the proud owner of that lovely piece!
Each year past 70 I'm enjoying the 38's and 9MM's more and more. Kind of like that commercial where the guy says he's a bad golfer BUT still wants to be able to BE a bad golfer! Same story here! Now that I can afford all the reloading supplies I could ever want, I'm my wife's caretaker. My shooting is just getting worse! Doesn't matter I just use the "Cowboy" range! (Bigger targets!!) And go when I can.

I pretend the 500 and 460 do not exist, less temptation.

I've had the dubious pleasure of shooting a 375 H&H model 70, same cartridge on a double rifle. 454 casull. I have a 44 mag redhawk that I used to shoot on a regular basis. The 375's were not bad regarding recoil but the 454 was about as much fun as I could stand. 2 rounds were all the fun I care for. Since then I love shooting my 44 specials and 357 magnum but really prefer the 38 special when going for accuracy. The 500 S&W is really not my cup of tea. My neighbor has one and one day maybe I'll ask to shoot it. One day in the far distant future. Frank

screen grab of the muzzle flash. That's a friend. He only shot it twice. I could only stand about 1/2 dozen before my hand hurt.

Looks like the bear stopper debate is settled, but one question remains: how do you persuade the bear to shoot it?

I enjoy my 8" 500, but 500 gr. is the heaviest I've used. Still, it's not a ful afternoon of shooting.

I'd like to try one out just to feel for myself. In the vid it doesn't look like fun, but.... I was expecting the 629 Classic in 6 1/2 to be far more punishing than it is. It really isn't at all. Soooo,...

WOW, whats the fuss all about?? Maybe with those 700's but with normal loads, say 350gr XTP's its just not that bad, heck both my daughters enjoy shooting mine on occasion!

Way too much for this old guy. Have fired a 454 casul and even that was my limit. My 44 magnum Redhawk is sitting in the safe gathering dust as I shoot my 44 specials more and more. to those who own and shoot the 500 more power to you. To quote Dirty Harry "a man's got to know his Limitations". Frank

That 700g load generates handgun recoil to the level of stupid IMO. No thanks but that's just me.
