This week I am picking up my Model 25, but I may also pick up a 586 the guy has, 6 inch full lug 6 shot. What are peoples opinions on them? I plan on putting a set of Pachmyer Billy Jordans I have on it if I get it. But people like them I assume? Anything I should know about them?

IMHO the 586 is one of the best all around revolver / handgun one could purchase. The 586 was the first handgun I ever bought and has been the judge of all other handguns I've purchased since. You should have no regrets once you take one home.
Hey the screen name relays my thoughts, enough said.

That it does, I grew up with my Father having his 25 Target and 16 Combat, and with mom and dad being gunsmiths, my mom taught me how to tune and stone on her J-Frame, and then after my mothers passing I been looking and getting S&W's when I can, got a Nickle 10, a 29 Target, Getting a 25 Target, and Hopefully that 586 Combat. There simple yet very effective and high quality revolvers.

I have a 6" 586 & it goes hunting with me. I pity the animal that comes within 30 yards of us. It shoots almost any factory load I feed it & the prices are continuously rising. Great gun, great investment.

I like mine.



Sold off a 686 to get it.

Like USMC586 said, my 4in 586 is the standard I judge others by. Buy it. You will not regret it.

You gotta get it. I love the 586s (and 686s). I don't have a 6" but I gotta say its on my list. Here are my two: 3" 586-5 PC L-comp, and 4" 586-1:

I wouldn't think twice about whether to purchase it or not.
The 586 is a must have for any collection large or modest in size.

I am a 586 owner and like it very much, the only thing special I know about them is the recall on the early no dash and dash one versions. Nothing serious unless you plan on using the gun as a main defensive tool, it regards an issue with primer flow back into the firing pin hole with some particular .357 loads causing the gun to lock up. S&W CS is still honoring the recall and on their dime if you choose to have it done. A lot of folks don't even bother to send theirs in for the fix, the only reason i sent mine in was for the free shipping and while it was home i had the custom shop do some work on it. you won't be disappointed if you do get it, but you might be if you don't.

Ive owned a couple of the 6" versions.Nice guns but too (nose) heavy IMHO.

Smith357, I'm sure you've been asked this before, but where did you get those stocks? I love the rounded edges!

The 6" IS nose heavy but the Pachmehr grips help with the grip. Being mostly a range gun, I don't mind it and even my wife has an easy time shooting it with lighter ammo. I can really see why somebody would like about a 4" barrel

They handle the recoil from a 357 very well,I just never became a fan of that cartridge.Ive always played with the 44s and 45s and just recently started with the 38s and 22s.Ive always been a bit backwards :-)

I reshaped the originals, when I bought the gun, Bubba had already softened all the edges, along with a bad trigger job, so I just went at them with a disk sander and rounded them similar to J frame target grips then a few coats of tung oil.

My first one was a 6" as a Christmas gift from my oldest, and now my favorite, son in 2011. Unfortunately, it started an "addiction" which my wife just can't understand. I seem to always be one gun purchase away from being a happy man.

Another advantage - you can shoot .357 Magnums in it all day long, but you can also shoot .38 Specials. Another forum member compared them to "bunny farts"! Go to the range with it and you'll understand better.

I'd also add some Model 19s (which I have) with your "586" to put it all together. You won't regret owning either, or both!!!

Great gun, I had a pair of blue ones that I shot for tens years.Can stand magnum rounds all day without the cylinder heating up and binding like my k frames 19/66.

The Model 586 is my favorite Smith & Wesson.

Mine started out as a 6", but I realized that I liked 4" barrels better, so I had it re-barreled to 4".

I have a 586 no dash 6 in.barrel.When I try to open the cylinder but its stuck,it still turns. Had to bump 2 times to open I need help

I have a 4" nickel 586 no dash that I bought when they first came out. Shot it some. Didn't cotton to it. Went back to my K's & N's. Mine sleeps deep in my safe.

It sounds like the yoke retention screw is too tight.
Try loosening it maybe 1/8" turn at a time until the cylinder swings freely.

The screw in question is on the right side of the gun, above and in front of the trigger.

I have some good p&r blued guns, they are shooters not queens, but when I get to the newer stuff I like stainless. I have often wanted a 686 but I never considered the 586. That just leaves more for you guys that like them. JMHO/YMMV

Make sure it's clean under the ejector and the ejector rod is tight (LH thread). And, like Hillbilly said, check the yoke retention screw.

Well I am hoping to get it, I will have a total of 4 for the moment and my wife likes my S&W thankfully. She loves my Nickle 10-6. Lastly I am looking for a Model 10, reblue the frame, put a stainless steel PPC Slab barrel on it an SS Cylinder. Think it will be a nice pistol, but thanks guys. My Father is hoping I get it along with my 25. Hell he has been ecstatic about me getting a 25 that matches his lol

Something about a blue gun from S&W. The 586 is a great place to start if you don't have one already.

You can't go wrong with a 586. All around, just about the perfect revolver. 4" or 6".
