mod19 v. 686
Here's a question for those that are more in the know than I am. I found a nice 4" 19-5 priced at $595 and looked it over and it's in pretty nice shape. AASXXXX serial number puts it at late '82 if I read the book correctly. I currently have a 4" 686 no dash that I really like but without having them side by side it's hard for me to see a lot of difference other than the 19 is built on the K frame and the 686 on the L. For those of you that have handed both, is there an appreciable difference?

Since they both use the same size grip frame, they will feel the same as far as the stocks go. The L frame will be more muzzle heavy. To me, it depends upon the purpose of the revolver. If for range use, it hardly matters. If for carry, the K frame will be easier to carry. One thing to consider is that spare parts may be more of an issue for the discontinued model. That said, I would take the 19.

I have carried and shot both in 4 inch barrels during my LE career, and I currently own a snubby 66 and a 6 inch 686. The grip size of the two models is the same; however, if you had an equal barrel length in both the 19 and the 686, the 686 will weigh more because of the larger frame and the full underlug barrel.
In my experience, that is an advantage when shooting full power .357 loads, since it will help lessen recoil and muzzle flip. It's not of much concern if you fire .38 special, .38 Special+P ammo, or less hot loads in .357 magnum. I don't think many would dispute the thought that the L Frame 686 is built stronger than the K Frame, and is better suited for firing sustained .357 magnum rounds.
So it comes down to what purpose you want the 19 to fulfill. It's lighter, and in a short barrel, it makes a pretty good concealed carry. The 686 is more of a .357 magnum work horse in my opinion. I love them both. Please post pics when you bring home the 19.

I sold my 19 and bought a 686 when they first came out. A decision I have regretted for several decades. The 19 balances better, and for me at least is quicker swinging to another target.

I'd get the 19 as they are getting harder and harder to find in good shape for a reasonable price.
I like the K frames best, but I shoot the snot of my 686 4" and its a keeper that I'll never get rid of. Because the L frame has the full lug it is soooooo sweet to shoot D/A. Points like a Python (IMHO) The K frames are balanced so nice - can't beat 'em! You can't go wrong with either one.
Sooooo you may have noticed that I told you to get the 19 AND KEEP the 686. You won't regret a no dash 686 in the future!

There's a reason many folks believe the Model 19 is one of S&W's most perfect revolvers.

A nice M19 or two should be in every safe in the land, but I prefer the L frame in 4in for range use with anything except .38Spl. I have three of each, and I could never let them all go except one...

For many the M-19 is the quintessential fighting revolver. In its day, millions went to work with cops of all types every day, for a number reasons; easy of carry, balance, and the power of the .357 Magnum round are just a few examples.
I can’t imagine not owning several M-19/66’s as long as I own firearms. All of the above being said my M-19 is kept unloaded in a silicon storage bag, and my M-586, (The carbon steel twin of the 686) is one of my loaded ready revolvers.
I guess what I’m trying to say is buy the one that feels best to you, you can’t go too far wrong with either.

If you like......
If you like to shoot a lot of full bore .357 loads, the m686 is a stronger (and bigger and heavier) than the m19, which is known to get premature wear from such a diet. I like my 686 but I wouldn't mind having a m19 to go with it. The 'K' frames are excellent pistols.

Thank you everyone for sharing your knowledge. As you've mentioned, it would be a great accompaniment not only for my 686 but also my old 28. Then I'd have one on every frame size but then the hunt would begin anew. My 28 has a 6" barrel and I'd need to get a 4" to get them to match. Well except that they'd all have a different finish but that's for another day.

I have both but comparing the two isn't quite fair. My M19 is blue 4" barrel, more suited for carry and only occasional shooting 357mag. The 686 is 7 shot, 5" barrel, more of a range gun. Wouldn't be my first or second choice for EDC. Open carry and a woods/hiking choice. The L frame allows me to shoot 357 all day long. I like them both, but the 19 was, is and always will be my favorite revolver.
