Default I think I have a US Customs Service 686 CS-1

Hi all brand new to the forum as I just picked up my very first S&W revolver ever. While researching it I found this forum and read about the us customs model and I'm pretty sure I have one. I have no serial numbers like I see other guns have though which I find very odd. Can anyone help me out with why I don't? And help me with any info they can add looking at these pics? I bought it from a friend for $475 which I thought was a good price now knowing it might be kind of rare seems to be a really good price.

Sorry I can't seem to add but one pic at a time. Or else I am forumly challenged and can't figure it out. Sorry for all the separate posts.

As you can see no where is the a 3 letter 4# serial number. There are no other numbers or anything on the gun besides the caliber and Smith and Wesson name unless I'm just missing it some how. You're right 158 I should be buying him a steak for sure.

Remove the grip. The serial is stamped on the bottom of the grip frame.

The factory additionally stamps the number on the yoke area on models that are shipped from the factory with Target grips (which hide the number)

If you take off the grips and look on the bottom of the grip frame the Serial number should be there.

You had the grips removed and should have seen a serial number on the flat bottom part of the frame.

If you click on Search (just under the word Forum on the home page) and type CS-1 in the Search Site/Google text box you will get a lot of information. The 2M stamp by report indicates a US Customs issued gun, as these went back to the factory twice for a modification/inspection. Many of these were sold as overrun production to regular distributors. Enjoy!

I'm sure I just over looked it. I wouldn't think it would be possible that it has no serial number. And it didnt look like someone had ground anything off. It has to be there I'll look tonight when I get home from work and post it in this thread. Anyone with a book that wouldn't mind letting me know about the shipping date and what not from it I would really appreciate it.

He is definitely a good guy to buy guns from as he always gives me great deals on stuff. I have gotten several off him so far. He just loves to buy and sell/trade firearms and he will give friend prices to those of us he knows well. And he will stand by anything he sells. I had one gun fail on me and no questions asked he bought it back for what i paid for it. So needless to say when I am looking for something I go to him first. And I had the urge for another .357 revolver although I was looking to get a single action again but when I saw this one I couldn't pass it up. Not to mention having the chance to finally own my first S&W revolver. The trigger on this thing is amazing. In double action mode the pull is the lightest I have ever seen on a factory gun and in single action mode it's unreal how light and smooth it is. Makes me wonder if at some point if someone did a trigger job on it.

Likely shipped in the spring of 1988, with the understanding that S & W does not ship in letter/number order and contract guns may be shipped in large batches.

Yes, you have a 4 inch CS-1. The 4 inch barrelled guns were issued to uniformed Customs Inspectors and Canine handlers.

Awesome! Thank you everyone for your help. I am not really worried about a value on it as I don't plan on ever selling it but sounds like these carry a higher value than the standard 686 non us customs guns. I am very happy to know I stumbled upon a model that is kind of rare. Or maybe just uncommon is a better description but either way I am very happy with my purchase. I can't wait to take it out shooting and see how it does. Should be pretty darn accurate as light as this trigger is. I ordered some dies so I can load my own rounds for it. Anyone happen to have a good recipe that works well in their guns I can start of with?
