Default N frame round butt template or tracing

I'm new to the forum. I'm 74, married to the same woman for 55 years, reloader & bullet caster since '59. I confess to also owning several Ruger SAs (sorry if the truth hurts). In addition ,I'm addicted to large bore single cylinder motorcycles.

I need a template or tracing of a round butt N frame (grip) for a square butt to round butt conversion.

Surprisingly Brownells nor Cylinder & Slide had one. I'd appreciate a lead (or a tracing).

Thanks,
Henry

I was considering a K frame square to round butt conversion. I was going to install a set of round butt grips and trace around those for a template. Think I have myself talked out of it though....

If you want to PM me with your address I could trace around the grip frame of my 24-3 RB. Unless you are want to create something special though, there are many mfg's that sell RB to SB conversion grips. I did a semi custom by buying some RB to SB finger groove grips from Kelly's, and them shortening and removing the finger grooves. I have smaller hands so they work well.

Before you start to do any grinding, when you get the tracing/pattern be sure to check whether or not the last number of the serial number on the bottom of the grip frame will be affected in any way. In many instances the last digit is positioned too far to the right and prohibits grinding the frame to make it a round butt.

Even though the serial number is also stamped in the yoke cutout on the frame, the one on the grip frame is the s/n of record that the BATF takes a real dim view of altering in any form.

I round butted a M67-1.
I just used the new grips (Ahrends RB finger grove boot) as a template.
I scribed a line along the new grip edges. Then, I worked to the line with hacksaw, files and Dremel tool, and a lot of sand paper. Finished up with 600 grit. In my case, I had groves to remove all the way up.
I was happy with the work.

Best,
Rick

There are Thailand grips on eBay that convert round n frames to square grips.

I am overwhelmed by the response!
To KLYDE: If you decide to do the conversion to your K frame, I can send a tracing of my 686 RB which should be the same as a K frame.

To: H. Richard: Thanks for the offer to furnish a trace, however K-MO has already contacted me by email & is sending a trace.

To: GunHacker: Thanks for the warning. I did this conversion to a 4" 25-5 in the early '90s and was careful to not disturb the SN. That 25-5 was stolen in 2000. I had a heck of a time locating a replacement (a story in itself). I hope SN location is consistent from N frame to N frame.

To Rick (Riverrat38): Sounds like you persevered to get a good result. I have a belt sander which helps.

To: K-MO: Many thanks!
Henry

BigBill: thanks for the tip on the square butt to round butt conversion grips. I used Pachmyer "Compacts" on my original 25-5 and really liked them. I'm committed to do them again......they may not be pretty, but they work for me.

If you have a problem with the serial number location, you might consider contacting the ATF. I believe that they ARE rather cooperative when you get in touch with them before cutting, and the serial number can be re-stamped before you start. A tracing is OK, and, at one time, Brownell's did sell some clamp-on metal plates for assistance in limiting the filing and grinding, but a pair of K RB Magnas will do as well, with a little care.
