Performance center 986 7 shot, first look
Well I just picked up my PS 986 seven shot 9mm and it may be the last gun I ever buy online. BTW JayMoore you told me not to buy without touching you were right I'm an idiot.
I love the feel, I love the size, I HATE that I can't shoot it because the *** doesn't lock up on ANY of the cylinders without moon clips but does lock up late , but it locks up, if I have a fully loaded moon clip in it.
People have told me that the PS guns were just different versions of there mass produced guns and as such were just high priced mass produced guns.
For $1000+ I expect better from a gun that is billed as a race revolver.
I've been buying Smith's for over 35 years and I've never had one that had NONE of the cylinders locking up.

Reason: It's in a blue box not a gray box .. :)

Is the ejector sloppy in the cylinder, and that is why it sort of locks when a moon clip is inserted? Trying to figure out what is going on there. Please post some pictures. I really want a 929, but I will not be buying one until I can lay my hands on it, or Jerry M gets it for me...

Ejector
It does not seem sloppy to me.
I am going to have my expert look at it tomorrow.
Learn from my stupidity .. Touch first .. then buy !

First, I believe the 986 is a Pro Series gun, not Performance Center. Next, there is something very odd in what you describe. I'm wondering if the hand or the bolt has an obstruction of some kind preventing it from functioning.
Can you take the side plate off and inspect? Don't try if you're not familiar with doing it. Don't want to spring the sideplate.
Definitely have a competent gunsmith check it over and good luck.

dis-assembly is no problem
I can get it apart no problem. I've been buying and taking apart Smith's since 1976. And you are correct it's in a blue box not a gray box like my TRR8. Several people have busted me on this ..

He calls it a PC gun too ..

JayMoore gave it a thorough look over.
It's the ejector 100% , several of the O.D. tangs are not even touching. When I got to the range and was able to fit ammo into the moon clips. It locked up fine. I am looking at getting it laser welded and fixing it myself.

Probably only a call to S&W would clear up whether it is actually assembled by the PC gunsmiths or on the regular assembly line.
ETA: I wouldn't fix a brand new gun myself, send it back to S&W and have them fix or replace it. It'll take a little longer but it will still be under warranty if anything else goes wrong.

My only problem is if they will let it go out like this once they could do it again. When I emailed Smith all I got back was a return form. Nothing that addressed any of my questions. Just a return form. You are 100% correct I should send it back. But this is well within my abilities now that I know it's not a major internal problem or messed up engagement on the extractor. I can have it fixed in hours. Smith won't give me a timeline.

I can assure the worrywarts that the fix is well within kdiver58's capabilities.
As a "for instance", he has EDM'ed hidden threads surrounding the muzzle of a .22 pistol just for giggles! (Which calls for a photo, 'cuz it's hard to put into words how mad that is...)
The revolver runs well as is. Was able to put a few through it. Given opportunity, I'll probably get one. Spending a $1000 to save on ammo costs seems loony, but if you shoot enough, the "launcher" is the cheap part of the equation! Plus, the tiny powder charges that are practical with 9mm means quicker recovery times. Good thing for Steel Challenge and such.

My $.02 is to send it back. I sent back a new 629 recently (cylinder bound like crazy while closing /opening, no end shake) and they had it fixed and back in about a week. They may let them out the door wrong once but doubt they'd do it twice.
But then I understand the desire to fix a problem on your own in a new gun.
Only problem with my 986 had been ejector rod coming loose and tying the gun up. Hope that's all I run into
