Is my new S&W500 missing the ejector rod cap?
I just picked up a new Smith and Wesson 500 revolver. I haven't fired it yet, but it seems to be missing a cap at the end of the ejector rod. There seems to be female threads at the end of the rod like it supposed to have a cap like in the photos.
If it is missing the cap, will Smith and Wesson send a replacement to me? Also, is this something that was forgotton at the factory or could it have wobbled loose somehow? Is it common? Should it be locktited?

Yep, yep, nope, maybe
Im not a fan of lock tight on guns.... maybe the lightweight stuff, but if it were mine I would just tighten and keep an eye on it.....

Your ejector rod doesn't have the threads needed to mount a cap. You will have to send the gun in to S&W to have them replace the ejector rod.
p.s. you MIGHT do the job yourself if you have the right tools and know how, but why not contact S&W and let them take care of it.

Agree with the previous posts...
-End is missing
-rod is not threaded
It has a lifetime warantee to the original buyer.
I know it stinks to send a brand new toy back to the makers, but that is precisely what I would do.
They will either thread the rod and install the cap or replace the rod all together. Either way it will be done right and you don't have to worry about doing something wrong and damaging your new revolver and having Smith not cover the subsequent damage under warantee.
Send her in!

I would give S&W a call and see if they will send it to you. I am certain you are capable of screwing it in.
I would not use locktite unless after shooting it, the cap continues to come loose. Then I would only use the removable locktite
and Welcome to the Forum

This is what's missing and you can see it fits into female parts.
Smith & Wesson Extractor Rod Cap S&W 460 500
S&W should send you a free one. I wouldn't send it in for just this.
Check in the box under all the packing stuff.

heck I'd like to see a close up of the threaded end of the ejector rod... to see if there is sufficient threads for the cap to be screwed to........... unless the rod doesn't have at least a 1/4" of threads...... I'd get S&W to send me a cap.............if the rod has almost no threads /non threaded then I'd send her back to S&W.........like the gent said above......... look into every part of the box & packing...........
If you inadvertently dropped it upon a shag carpet........ get out your vacuum sweeper & stretch a woman's knee high hose over the end of the vac hose & vacuum the area thoroughly........ the vac will pick it up & the part will be caught by the hosiery. A wise man would make sure that his wife's hosiery was a spare pair/old pair & that his wife said it was okay to use it first.

How is it that that particular part came up missing? (if you don't mind me asking) I'm a recent owner of a new S&W 500 mag, 4" revolver and am wanting to get all sorts of goodies to go with that new gun including all sorts of reloading stuff. In looking at a Google search It produced the "Ejector Rod Cap Screw" as a buy or add on and I'm wondering why. Is it like a new truck and doesn't come with a bumper (read cap screw) or is it that the heavy recoiling gun shoots that little bugger loose often enough to offer it for sale to anyone? Just not sure why I happened to see so many of them offered for sale, and then to read this thread. Is that a part that it wouldn't hurt to have another or maybe a couple in the gun bag just in case? Smithy.

Yep, recoil surely did it. It's best to check all your gun's screws/nuts after a day at the range. Invariably one gets loss.

Comfort. It's a lot more comfortable to eject the empty brass when the ejector knob is on the end of the ejector rod.

Thanks Jaymo, I was leaning that way. So, lack of it will not affect shooting itself, right ?
