9mm --986 and 929— I know the guns are new and not many guys have them. When these two guns come in at my LGS. I will need to pick one. I'm only shooting them at the range. I like the 5 in. barrel better but the 6in. rev. is made more for 9mm. If i'm shooting 25 to 50 ft. at the range would one gun shoot better then the other ?

How is the 6" made more for 9mm?
Personally, I don't think you'll see much difference between the two. I would go with the 5". I'm not an expert, but the space you're talking about is common when S&W puts an auto round in a revolver. It's seems to be an extension to allow for a shorter cyclinder. I guess it's cheaper than redesigning the frame. Although I have no idea why Smith does this. Ruger doesn't shorten the cylinders on their blackhawks in 45 acp or 9mm.

I agree, I really dont see why a 6 inch is made more for a 9mm than a 5 inch. I dont think you will see much, if any, difference in accuracy. I think you are lighter and smaller are the advantage to the 986 and one more round is the advantage to the 929.

The shorter cylinder is because of the shorter cartridge of the 9mm. the 45 ACP cylinder is the same way on a model 625. I guess the theory is the sooner it gets into the barrel rifling, the sooner the projectile can get stable resulting in higher velocity and better accuracy. Thats just my guess, Im sure someone who really knows will explain.

The pc revolver was made with .355 barrel made for only 9 mm rounds. The other revolver has a .357 barrel. Sw made a 9 mm revolver years ago the the barrel can shoot 9 mm and 357 it shoot good with 357 but when you shot using 9 mm it was all over the place. I may be wrong with the spec.

I would guess that the 929 will be more desirable for USPSA with the revolver division minor allowing 8 shots. Although you would need to remove the comp for that. Also the longer sight radius should help one to shoot it more accurately. The shorter cylinder makes for less freebore before entering the forcing cone, should improve accuracy.

If you just intend to plink with them either one should work fine. If you compete the extra round could make a difference. As to the Pro version using a .357 barrel I don't know but I would like to hear from somebody that has slugged the barrel to be sure. The gap on the 929 is because it is an N frame the 986 is an L frame. My 627 38 super has the large gap too. I was told before I bought it that S&W used a .357 barrel on it but when I slugged the bore it is a snug .354 and shoots lead very accurately. Either one you buy if you don't like it you shouldn't have a hard time selling it.
