sw 638 or lcr made decision
I have been debating for a while on 638 or Lcr
have been shooting my buddies Lcr
and its nice i shoot well with it but I am more accurate with my mod.60 no dash but like the light weight of lcd then i researched
the new 638 like the shroud but still pull hammer back. and same weight as Lcr. Well i did it i bought the 638 tuesday and just got back from range, I did not think it possible for a snubbie(in my hands) could shoot a 2 inch group(5 shots obviously) at 50 ft. off hand but i did it. could not be any happier with purchase.
Thanks for letting me share my excitement (wife doesn't know i bought it yet lol)i was bursting to tell someone Smith did it again another winner.

Nice shooting, sir!
On a very good day, I can do that with my wife's 638-3, shooting in the single action mode. But, it took a fair amount of practice and a trigger job to be able to say that, and it doesn't happen all the time.
New out of the box . . . that is very impressive.
Congratulations on your great new revolver!

MY favorite J frame for CCW. I have several humpbacks..even a pre 38. But the 638 goes in my pocket...I don't have to worry about scratching up a 58 year old beauty that way. Nice choice. That is very impressive shooting out of the box. I shoot mine at 10' and 15'. Any farther and I am running not fighting. Or using my primary carry weapon.. A SW 4513TSW or SA XDS .45

I just shot my new 638-3 for the first time last week and let me just take a moment to share in your enthusiasm for your new revolver!
I was shooting at a hay bale w a target jabbed onto it so I didn't really measure groups but I was very happy w how it performed.
Now on the hunt for a 649....

Congrats on your 638. I'm a big humpback fan myself. I have a 638-3, 638-1 and a 649 no dash. I'm searching for a pre-lock 649 (.357) to round out my collection.

You will undoubtedly get recommendations from more knowledgeable and experienced people but here is some food for thought.
Range session with some affordable ammo we bought last year.
Water jug "test" that illustrates why we use this at the range, happily.
Water jug test of what I carry. Hard to find, but it is just as accurate as the stuff in the first picture, is easy to shoot from a recoil perspective, and is not too noisy. I shot a round indoors, forgetting to insert my ear protection, and had no ill effects or ringing.

Welcome to the humpback club. A 638 has been my daily carry for almost 2 years now. My regular shooting loads are even lighter than yours - 3.2g of Trail Boss with a 158g round nose flat point lead bullet I cast myself. I can shoot that load all day in a K frame, and for quite a while in a lightweight J.
As for carry ammo, I can tell you that out of MY 638 the Buffalo Bore standard pressure 158g LSWCHP equals the velocity of the +P Remington with the same bullet. (Of course it kicks about the same, too, the laws of physics NOT being subject to selective enforcement.) This is supposed to be the old "FBI Load" from days gone by, which is reputed to have been pretty effective.
