Hello all, been lurking a long time finally decided to join to ask a few questions. I just purchased a new 442, been wanting one for a while now, saw one at my local dealer and couldn't resist. Its the no lock model and shoots great, I love everything about it except one thing....the trigger gets stuck every few shots. What I mean by stuck is when I pull the trigger it stays locked back. I have to squeeze hard several times for it to release. My question is is this normal break in or something more serious? It did this 4-5 times in 30 rounds. Could I do anything to prevent it? Thanks for taking the time to read and respond...

Is this a dry firing issue or when actually shooting? If dry firing, then it needs to go back to s&w. If its with actual firing, does it do it with only one type of ammo? Have you tried more than one type? And welcome to the forum!

Edit: I see its with actual ammo. Besides trying different ammo, if you have feeler gauges, check the barrel to cylinder gap and report back with what it is. One that's too tight will lock the gun up if fired a bunch or with dirty ammo.

I do recall the trigger sticking once while dry firing. Would you say it'd a break in issue? Lube issue? Or more serious?

Not a break in issue and more than likely not a lubrication issue. Revolvers use surprisingly little oil. If it were me, I would measure the gap and try a different type of ammo. But I'm guessing this gun will have to go back for warranty work. Don't fear though, s&w will take care of you and in most cases you'll have the gun back in your hands within 2 weeks. They'll even pay shipping.

I have had the same issue a few times with a 642, but only when my wife is shooting. So gar I've chalked it up to her not letting the trigger reset sometimes. I keep waiting for it to happen to me, we shall see.

My no lock 442 did the same thing, I was able to complete the course but had to push the trigger back forward. Sounds like a call to Smith is in order.

Didn't think of me not letting the trigger fully cycle. Never crossed my mind. I might try a few more dry fires and see if that was the problem

If it's not a reset problem, then it's gotta be looked at. The trigger return spring on a J-frame can take two men and a boy to take off and put on. I mean it's STRONG. Something is way outta wack for the trigger not to return. Good news is I bet it's an easy fix. It may be that the TRS just isn't seated correctly - it's canted. You bought the gun NIB and are sure it wasn't bubba'ed at all?

I'm no authority on the subject, but my 642 has never done that either dry firing or with live ammo. I've put about 1700 rounds through it so far. Dry fired several hundred times. FWIW.

I am by no means an expert, but I'm working on the theory that she is doing something different than I am, until it happens to me.

I have a model 43c that did the same thing until I shot it about 200 times. Now it is fine.

I got a new 442 a few months back and had problems with it firing after several rounds. I removed the side plate and found a lot of nasty stuff in the workings and no lube anywhere. Blowed and washed out the workings oiled it up and since then it goes bang very time with a smooth trigger pull.

Unless you're experienced with the S&W lockwork and know what every part does, what might do, and what it might cause another part not to do...send it to S&W. Or send it to me.
