Default Performance Center 460 XVR "M460 Carry"

I decided to scratch my X frame itch. I had been intrigued with this gun ever since its release at the SHOT show back in January. I know that basically this same gun was released a few years ago as the 460 ES "Bear Survival Kit"or something like that. I have also seen similar pictures of a short barreled 460 model with a compensator. I had one from the first production run in my cart on CTD back in February and by the time I went to check out it was no longer available. So I got bored the other night and found one on GB and hit the "Buy Now" button. The gun is being shipped to my FFL and should be in the first part of next week. I already know that many will dismiss this gun as simply being unpractical for its intended purpose because of weight, noise, short barrel, etc. I just have a fascination with big revolvers. I bought a Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan a few months ago in .44 mag and regretted not getting it in .454 Casull. And yes I already have a four inch barreled 629 and love it. At any rate, I'm excited about my new purchase, as well as it being my first Performance Center piece, and would appreciate any of you guys' input. Was wondering about other forum member's experience with this specific piece, and any advice on loads, different grips, muzzle blast, and so on. I will post pics as soon as I pick it up.

Congratulation on your acquisition.

For clarification the new 3.5" is the the uncompensated version of the previous Lew Holt 3.5" compensated model.

You will enjoy it.

Thanks, and great picture by the way! Is there a huge difference in the felt recoil of the uncompensated model? What are your favorite loads?

Not much difference in recoil to me; much less noise and muzzle flash though. While the 200 FTX loads will draw a big crowd, I like to shoot the 240 XTP MAG and 300 XTP MAG bullets out of the shorter guns. You don't have to run them hard for them to print small groups and they are still have plenty of energy.

These guns favor the hand-loader.

Have fun and be safe.

Still trying to decide what I think about the olive green Hogues. I don't dislike them...just wondering if black would look better.

They shot fine. I believe I did a range report back in late April or May of this year. A lot less muzzle flash and noise coming back making it more pleasant to shoot in my opinion. Recoil is about the same as the 3.5" comped version to me also. recoil of the shorter barrels 460s is marginally more. Up close they shot low, I put a shorter front site on my comped version and plan to do the same to this model when I finish some of my other projects.

It is a good shooter. The recoil is not to bad but make sure you have GOOD hearing protection. I use double protection when shooting mine.

Default 460 PC

I just got a new-to-me 460 & plan to give it a work-out with a variety of handloads this weekend. I like big-bore snubbies & if this is as much fun as it looks, I'll be selling my 454 SRH shortly.

I think this just sold me on the M460 XVR.

I would sincerely appreciate, if you could measure from the back of the cylinder to the end of the barrel?

I think I read some place that the cylinder was about 2-5/16" long.

Here in WI, I would need a Min of 5-1/2" from the firing pin to the end of the barrel to be legal for hunting, so I would also assume that would have to be the same to carry while deer hunting.

The cylinder length is 2.3"
length from the firing pin would add about another.1"
total length would be 5.8" to 5.9"

My state eliminated the min barrel length requirement. Can you mount a scope and/or hunt with this short of a barrel? Such a beautiful gun. I'm saving up for one.

Yes you can mount a scope on these. Your muzzle flash/blast is going to be awful hard on your scope though!!!

I would suggest not.

A "See All" work well.

Good luck and be safe

Those are nice looking grips but I'm thinking they might be awfully hard on your hands??

I got to the range today to shoot mine. I was confused about whether the sights would be well regulated as the previous owner had changed the front sight to a taller one but you went with a shorter one. I decided to leave the taller gold bead FS (.308" vs the HIVIZ .208") on & change the shorter rear sight (.115" blade, which was adjusted fully down) assembly out with a .160" white outline assembly (that I was going to use for another project) & set the adjustment to the middle of it's range. I hoped the taller rear would raise the POI (offsetting the taller front) plus the .160's "U" notch is 50% deeper (.075" vs .052") making front sight acquirement easier while keeping a sight blade, which I'm used to.

I shot about (120) rounds ranging from 45 Colt +P to near max 460 Magnums (using IMR4227, Lil'Gun & 2400) & this setup worked great for me. The 250 & 300gr JHP 460s required a couple clicks up from what worked on the slower LC+P ammo & the 225gr FTX loads hit a little lower still (at 12yds out). Since the rear sight is still basically in the middle of it's range I think this will be good.

It's a BLAST !! And I think it's easier to control than my SRH 454 7-1/2" bbl. It's a little heavier, shorter barrel & has the MagNaPorting to help. I didn't notice any downside to the porting (noise, blast...how can you make it worse?) I tried some 45 Colt power cast lead loads & apparently this gun doesn't like lead bullets, so it'll get a full diet of copper only from now on.

This is what I'm wondering as well. I would love this exact model in 500. Part of me is thinking of buying this 460 just based on the fact that it seems every ridiculous short or light Magnum I've wanted has been discontinued (340PD, 329PD, 500 ES) .

I wonder how long this will stick around?

OP nice pick up.

Also, the wood grips on it in that ruggyh pic up there make it GORGEOUS.

I'm lovin my new .460! Got some handloads worked up and now just need to find some range time to see what it likes. All I've gotten to shoot so far has been factory Hornady 200gr FTX ammo - and with that at least, I can say that the recoil is less violent than shooting .454's out of my snubby Ruger Alaskan! As pictured above, the muzzle flash is impressive - especially at night...

I have to assume by "carry" you not only mean the model name but carry as in a woods gun. Anything bigger than 44 is for four legged not two and if you actually had to use it in a self defense situation vs human you will not have a jury of your peers on your side if charged especially in a liberal state, not to mention the people you are endangering with such a violent load. Ammo has come a long way most 357 and 44 will kill or stop anything in the US. Love both my 500 and 460 both 4" but would never carry it daily and one is really losing the point of a large magnum with anything under 4".

Yes, "Carry" is the model's name. It's rarely shown anywhere but it is on the gun box's label.

Default S&W 460 XVR 3.5"

I just ordered the S&W 460 XVR 3.5" to add to my X-Frame collection. Has anyone been able to locate a holster for this great looking gun?
