Default Compensators???

I have noticed that some of the new S&W revolvers come with a compensator on the end of the barrel. What would be the purpose of a compensator?

Joe

The compensator is supposed to reduce somewhat the amount recoil and "flip" of the muzzle on firing, especially on the monster rounds like the 500 and 460 S&W cartridges.

Since I'm not a fan of most comped handguns, I'll say that the purpose is to put more noise back on the shooter.
Actually I think I've read somewhere claims of as much as 40% reduction in recoil. So the more recoil, the more reduction you'll likely notice.

As noted earlier, the purpose of the compensator is to help reduce muzzle flip. While it certainly helps with the hard kicking cartridges, a lot of competitive shooters favor the compensators for light target loads. Surprisingly, there are companies that sell compensators for .22 rimfire guns. When speed between targets is the name of the game, (steel challange, USPSA, and ICORE) the compensators have a pretty big following. The new model 929 revolver (9mm) comes with a compensator, with the intent being quicker transitions between targets.

A compensator reduces the reward thrust and vertical rotation of firearms. It does this by directing high-pressure gas through a series of vents.
Compensators work BEST with lighter bullets moving fast because the bullet passes through the compensator sooner allowing high-pressure gasses behind it to vent forcefully.
As bullet weight goes up and speed drops, compensators loose "perceived" efficiency.
Smith & Wesson's compensated X-frames are an example of effective, efficient compensation.

Default V COMP work?

I just got a 629 V COMP and fire it this weekend for the
first time. I was shooting 44 specials not magnums. I also
had my 629 no dash 6" with me. Seemed the 4" V COMP had less
felt recoil than the longer tubed gun. Didn't really notice
more noise, of course had my ear muffs on. ha!
The heavy V COMP barrel help with that also I suspect.

Compensators really do help with recoil. I have fired my comped 640 both in darkness and from inside my pocket. I was not blinded and my clothes did not catch fire
