Default 637 Wyatt Deep Cover info

Hey guys,
I'm looking for info on the 637 Wyatt "Gunsmoke." I've been looking into purchasing this model for my Dad and was curious to know if it's available without the lock? Even though he has quite the collection of guns, he's currently pocket carrying a Colt .25. ??? When I showed him my 442, I saw the sparkle in his eye and I've been looking at some Airweights to upgrade him to. The 637 is a beauty and the Gunsmoke logo fits him like a glove! As far as he's concerned, Marshal Dillon hung the moon. I thought I'd see if you guys could give me the lowdown for a great gift for the ol' man? LMK

You might check out John Bianchi's Frontier Gunleather company, they sell a James Arness signature belt and holster. Somewhat expensive but every Gunsmoke fan should have one.

Unfortunately, the Smith & Wesson 637 "GUNSMOKE: WYATT DEEP COVER" revolver has absolutely nothing to do with Matt Dillon or the Gun Smoke radio and television series.

There is another television show about some gun shop and a Wyatt family who operate it. I understand they are off the air now because Rich Wyatt, the male lead, got busted for tax evasion. I have never seen the show, but you can probably find something on YouTube.

http://blogs.westword.com/latestword...fteen_guns.php

http://www.denverpost.com/ci_2288690...ay-taxes-9news

Edited to add: Still, it is a neat revolver and some of the prices I have seen appear to be bargains considering what you are getting. If the funny business with the Wyatt family doesn't concern him or you, it would be possible to just pretend it relates to the other TV show, which is one of my favorites, and enjoy a very nice looking J-frame.

Ruger or Urberti single action in a leather rig for a gift.

Wyatt Deep cover only if they are giving them away or as a joke. Wyatt=fool

If his eye's lit up at the 442, why not get him a 442? The gunsmoke version is not my cup of tea, might not be his either. Ed.

Thanks for the feedback guys! TucsonMTB I know this model's not related to the old tv series and I don't know much about Mr. Wyatt and his tax problems, so no worries. As for evaled's comment, I know he likes the stainless better and of course thinks I'm crazy for getting the black 442! I just think the polished bits and bobbed hammer of the 637 look like his style. The Gunsmoke logo is just a perk! Does anyone know if it comes sans the lock?

The only current no-lock S&Ws I have ever seen or heard of are the centennial models. (642, 442, etc.)

My wife bought me one for my last birthday. Aside from the rather silly name sake I find it to be very functional. It is supposed to be a performance center model. Trigger is very sweet.

Pretty much any j frame is a dandy present IMHO. They come in so many flavors, you can never have too many of them.

Default 637 WDC Info

Had one and wasn't for me or my wife. A model 10, or 36 snubby shoots and handles better. I do like your 442 idea, never leave home without one. Just my opinion, some find the 637 to be great.

I liked my Wyatt 637 so much that I bought a 2nd one. It is a PC gun and a sweet little carry piece. In my pocket as I type. I originally thought the hammer return spring was too weak, but my 'smith said to leave it alone, that was the way the PC designed it.

I changed out the grip as I have never cared for the "Hip Grip" style and mode of carry. Also, the grip feels slick and seems to loosen when firing. Ignore the logos, just as I also ignore the 'Ladysmith' logo on my Model 60 .357, plus the ugly disclaimer in the barrels of Ruger revolvers.

A forum search will turn up other recent 637 Wyatt threads.

This from a man who never met a J-frame he didn't like . . . or almost never. Oh, and I resemble that remark too.

These were introduced in 2013 at the SHOT Show. I an certain they are not in continuous production. It was just a single small run. All of the revolvers are identical

Default whats a hammer return spring?

Just curious what do you mean by Hammer Return Spring? The Hammer Main Spring? the Trigger Return Spring?

I believe the actual terminology is 'rebound spring.' It serves to return the trigger to its forward position, and has a 2nd function that I am not familiar with. Other posters should have this for you. Am NOT talking about the coil mainspring.

I'd buy a M37 and have the work I wan done by a good gunsmith

Better yet, I'd buy a M38

Wyatt is no Marshal Dillon.

Just my opinion, of course

Does anyone know if the WDC grips are available aftermarket I always run my Barami Hip Grips with a Tyler T-Grip in front of it. I'd like to try a set of these WDC hip grips.

Second question: Is the trigger DAO on the WDC?

The WDC grips are advertised in the Dillon Precision catalog for $29.95. I'm sure they're also available direct from the mfg, DeSantis. I have 2 Wyatt snubs and have removed these grips from both. They are a little loose on the frame, do not tighten properly, and do not afford a secure hold on the gun. Also, the shelf (?) that hooks over the belt is smaller than the HipGrip's, and I've found the piece to not be secure when carried IWB without a holster. It can work up and out of the waistband. It is also uncomfortable.

P.S. Forgot, the WDC is DAO. It is, however, a VERY slick little carry piece. The only thing wrong with mine, grip aside, is that I do not have a third! Hope all this helps.

I ordered a DeSantis Clip Grip for my model 37 and like it very well. I previously had the Hip Grip on a model 38 and found it needing a T-grip adapter, and it cracked at the screw hole after about 3-4 years of everyday carry ( not too bad for $20 bucks I suppose). My LGS charged about the same for the DeSantis and so far so good. No T-grip adapter needed.

I fondled a WDC at another LGS about a month ago and thought it was okay, but I left it there, it's gone now. I'm usually fine with a set of Wolf springs in my S&W revolvers. Thankfully we live in a free country where we can have them they way we choose.

Yes, the Wyatt Deep Cover is double action only. But the action was worked on from the factory and is very good.

Rich Wyatt may be a fool but his namesake J-frame is no joke. Don't discount the revolver because of that relationship. It's a solid little DAO shooter with a PC tuned action and bobbed hammer. There's a lot of gun there for the money, and the polished bits are bonus if you like that.

Don't we have enough bigotries with S&W without propagating what a despicable name "Wyatt" is to some people?

S&W isn't responsible for Rich Wyatt's actions and his legal issues occurred and/or became news after the guns had been made. What should they do, recall the guns because the guy's name is on them?

What we "should do" is just let it go, allowing the name to be mentioned. I have one of the guns and tend to take it a bit personally.

I really don't know who Wyatt is, nor do I care. The logos do not bother me as the gun handles and shoots so well. That's why I have 2. Really like the PC-tuned action, as does poster WC145.

I also have a "Ladysmith" model 60 in .357. The attractive, pink-ish (to me) finish and logo aside, it's the same brutal little close-in gun as it's non-logo-ed 'brother.' Nobody except the range shooter to my right is going to see that logo. And it also shoots well.

I concur that the Wyatt Deep Cover is a great firearm. The trigger and action is incredible. The Gunsmoke logo etc. is meaningless. The 637 is just one fine little defensive weapon.

Absolutely. This is a first class, PC j-frame that exceeded every expectation.

The smooth trigger surface and action are excellent. Wasn't sure about the bobbed hammer, but I am now. The weak point are the grips. Wasn't a big deal to swap them out .

I own 2 of them. Maybe 3 by tomorrow?

I've got one, too. My first post was addressing the comment about giving the guns away or the guns being jokes because of the name. The gun is far more than the reputation the name brings. But, there's no changing the relationship, it is what it is. Lighten up, Francis.

Anyone or any shop can pay S&W to make a run of whatever gun they have or a mix of features. This is how Talo, Bone Collector and Big Rock do it as has a name that slips me who had a batch of custom 5" 500s made.

Sounds to me this example was a marketing attempt and tie in with the show....etc. S&W doesn't likely have any personal affiliation with the guy who called up and either hand picked components or told the PC to do it for him.

That said, let's all get together and commission a batch of 500 PCs identical save for caliber to the 3" 460 XVR PC . The 460 always gets copies of the 500 specials like ES, Bone Collector...etc. That 460 PC is a dream, I just need it in the king of pistol calibers

Hi, SW forum. I haven't posted in awhile. However, I just picked up a like-new Wyatt Deep Cover, and shot it yesterday. WHAT A GREAT LITTLE GUN! I saw the episode on TV where they introduced the gun, and thought it was a good idea. Sure, the Barami hip grip long pre-dated DeSantis' product, and before that Officers would wrap their J-Frame grips with rubber bands to keep the IWB-carried gun, sans holster, situated above their belt line. And, Mr. Wyatt was hardly the inventor of the bobbed hammer!

That notwithstanding, the 637-2 with the "Deep Cover" treatment looks great and shoots great. The polished trigger doesn't bite the medial joint of my trigger finger, and the polished screws, cylinder flutes, and hammer look great. The PC action work is quite apparent during firing, in that you get a boring thunk-bang, thunk-bang as the cylinder smartly locks-up before ignition. The pull is suitably light, and the weapon fires reliably without the extra weight from the hammer spur. I easily passed my agency's qualification course with this gun with the DeSantis grip installed. Not a perfect score, but it's a super-light J-frame with small grips, and I split the course with 39 rounds PMC 132gr. FMJ, and 21 rounds 135gr. +P Speer Gold Dot ammo. At 10ft, it put 5 of the +P Gold Dots into a group where all were touching, and POA=POI. NICE!!! I carried it IWB for the rest of the day, and it was VERY comfortable with the DeSantis grip keeping the gun solidly above my waistline. Great features put together in a great gun. I paid $0 for the gun, having traded two good, but unwanted guns for it. Asking price was originally $500, and my dealer threw in at least $100 worth of ammo and a (heretofore unused) Hogue grip.

I liked the show. Great guns, beautiful women, and fascinating gunsmithing projects. Mr. Wyatt's personal woes and alleged business practices don't concern me. I wish him and his family well, and like the "package" he induced S&W to sell for a brief time.

My "Wyatt Deep Cover" 637-2 will be part of my concealed carry rotation for the foreseeable future.

S&W is now making a Centennial variant with similar features. It lacks the Wyatt/Gunsmoke engraving, and they added a new grip design. That, to me, shows that the original idea had substantial merit.

LMK
If you (or anyone else) is interested, I have a 637 Wyatt "Gunsmoke" model that is NIB, unfired, (I am the original owner) with the box and papers listed for sale in the classifieds with pictures. If you are seriously interested, PM me and we will talk seriously about price. You can certainly buy one from me a noticeable amount less than I have ever seen one sell for over the counter, and that will include shipping from my FFL to yours.

I bought this gun because I like J Frames and because I was aware that it is a limited run model. Brought it home and put it in the safe January of this year. I have too many (yeah, I know that's not possible!) and I need room in my safe. My sons are not revolver men at least at this point in their lives. All their friends have plastic semi auto shuckers and so do they. They each own a good S&W revolver already so I've done about all I can with them. I'd like to get some space and subsidize the purchase of some of the revolvers that I've bought since. PM me if you are in the least interested in buying this model of J Frame and let's talk! Thanks for allowing the commercial here!

Edit: Found the link to my ad. Take a look here! http://smith-wessonforum.com/guns-sa...-revolver.html .

Default 637 Wyatt Deep Cover info

I remember the episode where Rich Wyatt traveled to Springfield to sell S&W on it.

I'm sure the execs we're thrilled about the publicity, probably thinking of how many J-frames they'd sell every time viewers saw his daughter Paige holding a 637.
