Default Rainy Day at the Range

Rain or shine, it had to be done. My "new to me" 629-5 was begging to be shot and I took the 29-4 for "grins". Both shot to POA, after slight sight adjustment.

I did notice that the 629 seemed to have tighter tolerances in the chambers of the cylinder. Some of my loads, assembled on a Dillon 550, would not "fit" but, the majority did and shot fine. The 29 "ate" everything! There were two different loads, one with 2400 and one with Unique. The Hornady XTPs shot great!

It beat staying at home and watching golf!

Nice pair. Curious why some of your loads wouldn't "fit"? Both are the same chamber specs.

Very nice pair! A Smith 44 whether magnum or not is on my want list! I have 1 big bore, a 625 JM. Really enjoy shooting it. Wouldn't it be great if I found a 547 too? Bob............... P.S. have you tried 1 of the new gun umbrellas you can attach to your Smith?.......You know I am just kidding!

I will have to check the specs on my other loads and perhaps recaliberate my dies. Some of the rounds would fit but, required more force to insert them fully into the chamber. I didn't want to "force" anything so, I opted to try them in the 29 and they dropped right into the chambers without any issues.

I have experienced the same issue with my .44 special and .44 mag reloads using a 629 vs. my Model 29. Once in a while a cartridge will not chamber properly in my hunting 629, but will slide right into the 29.

Throats are certainly tighter on the new .44s. I load up to 0.004" larger bullets for the older revolvers. That definitely doesn't work well in the new ones! It's like having two different calibers that look the same. But worth the bother when best accuracy is desired.

Rainy range time? Hard on finishes but...:
