I often carry my model 34 kit gun 4" loaded with .22 LR Mini-Mag
Hollow Points and don't worry a bit.
You get hit center mass with 2-3 of these and i believe you will
cease moving towards me with bad intentions.

Sometimes carry Ruger LCR with 8 CCI Stingers in it.
Shot placement is everything.

Sometimes I carry one of my snub 34's or 63. Especially when I'm on the tractor/4 wheeler/lawnmower. Killed a doe with my 2" blue 34 after she tried playing chicken with my truck. One shot to the control center........Lights out.

I'll carry my NAA Black Widow with the 22 mag cylinder when I am walking the dog. Some don't think they are accurate but I can hit minute-of-soda-can at 10 yards pretty regular.

I've never carried a 22LR pistol for carry but if it's all I had I would not hesitate.

I'll admit to having done so.
Dog medicine...
...of course that was back in the days when it was actually possible to purchase .22LR ammunition!

Never done so but if it was my only gun I would save some money and use that 22 as trade + cash towards something a little more serious

I use to CC a NAA .22 Magnum, but it went back 3 times from normal use and dry fireing. They fixed it each time but I was not going to put my life on the line with something that failed.
Anything else is the same size as a .380 ACP or a "J" frame and a .22 is not what I want in a CC.

Deriter2011,
Now than my knickers are untwisted .............
Since the stats say there is a 15% hit rate in real-life shooting scenarios a point in favor of a .22 revolver versus a similar size center fire revolver is capacity. For example a 43c holds 8 rounds of .22 LR and other similar size center fire revolvers hold 5 rounds.

In olden days I often carried a .22RF because that is all I had. On occasion I still carry my M-34 2" or 63 3" around the place or on a quick trip to town. Of course, my NAA is always in my off pocket when I am on duty.

A friend came within 5 minutes of dying, bleeding out, when shot in the leg with a .22lr That was three weeks ago IIRC.

I had a Taurus PT-22 that I carried a few times, because it was so small. For a really small gun, I now have a Ruger LCP in .380 that is much better for defense. The thing is, if I was out walking in the country, the PT-22 would've been a lot better for impromptu plinking...it was really fun to shoot.
.22 isn't the best, but I understand it's done the trick many times.

I've been known to carry a 3" Hi-Standard Sentinel loaded with 9 CCI Stingers. Felt comfortably well-armed.

I frequently carry a NAA PUG .22 mag. in my pocket as a BUG. When I'm out mowing or weed trimming around buildings, I carry it loaded with snake shot. I've seen the damage a .22 mag hollow point can create on larger animals, and while it may not be the man stopper of larger calibers, it can be very effective with shot placement.

I use to carry a NAA Black Widow also at one time now I stick with the 380 or 9mm. Plus I quit buying 22LR guns because of the ammo crisis. I own 7 22 rifles for anything I want to be able to do with them but I quite buying them because of the ammo shortage. I can get 380 and 9mm any time.

Somebody I know has a 317LS.
Dump a cylinder full of CCI Tripleshok rounds into a baddie or three and I think the message will be sent.
Photo made just after purchase. NIB from 1997.
She shoots a .45 pretty well, too but it's too heavy to carry- for her.

John Hinckley shot President Reagan with a .22.
That started the Brady Act thing that dogs us to this day. BTW, it wouldn't have helped, but by golly they didn't waste the opportunity to punish honest, sane people over it.

IF I were going to EDC a 22 it'd be a 2" S&W 317 or a Beretta 71.
OR a S&W 2213 (once I find one!!!)

Well, if I told you that even my kit gun is a .38 (model 36-6), would that answer your question?
As a kit gun, the ability to carry hundreds of rounds with no effort at all is certainly a point in favor of the .22, but EDC?
The first reason that comes to mind for carrying a .22 for defense is the unavailability of a .25.

I am glad that there are some of you out there that either have carried a 22 revolver at one time or that even some of you edc. I think I see the function of one of these as they are simple and cheap & easy to shoot so that you can use one effectively. I know its not a 45, but if you are fairly good with one,,,,,,it could work. Thank you all who responded.

My NAA Wasp in 22mag has been in my pocket every clothed moment since I bought it about 3 months ago. Still need to get my Kangaroo Carry for my 640 38spl to up the caliber, but in my line of work I doubt it would become EDC. Definitely more often but not EDC.
Stay safe, John

I carry a NAA .22LR whenever I walk the dog or mow the grass; Mr. Noshoulders frequents my yard and the trails we walk. I only shoot the water moccasins and rattlesnakes, non-poisonous snakes are welcome.

EDC is every day carry. I do have a 9mm but someday may move to the 22 revolver. Right now I carry a 38 revolver and will switch to the 9 mm when I get a holster from Alien. Mercy, I did not know when I ordered the holster from them that it could take up to 6 weeks to get it. Found out that deal after I had it ordered. It did not take them that long to run the credit card though. They got the money and I am still waiting. The 38 is a ruger lcr and is not much fun to shoot. On the other hand, the 9 mm is quite pleasant to shoot. As I mature more and if the arthritis gets to be a problem, then the 22 will be my edc. Hope everyone understands this, as I do understand that it is not as powerful as maybe others. But it is a lot better than nothing. I think I trust it to do the job.

As I like to say when these topics come up, ask Robert Kennedy about the effectiveness of a .22.

EDC is a 7-shot 351c in .22 Magnum. I like the extra rounds, light weight, and gentle recoil.

I never have, but if it was all I had of course I would. These days the lightest I go is a Keltec 32 and it's a nasty little stinger.

If ever I am unfortunate enough to get into an actual gunfight, I surely hope that I will not be standing there holding a 22 handgun. Even if you hit the other guy he will probably still kill you.
Get a 45 and learn to shoot it well.

I really prefer 9mm and .38 Special for a EDC gun and can carry one easily. Id prefer not to be carrying anything smaller than a .380 but admit to carrying a Beretta 21 on occasion in a shorts pocket while taking out the trash near the neighbors mean dog.
However, the first rule of a gunfight is 'Have a gun.' I have trained several people who FLAT OUT REFUSE to go any larger than .22, because of size or recoil. I believe a .22 is much better than nothing, and encourage those people to learn to shoot the gun well and carry it.
I have been able to get many of those people to move to larger calibers eventually. Case in point is my wife, who really did not care for guns at first and refused to shoot anything larger than our .22's. Now, without pushing her into doing what she did not want to do, she has moved up to 9mm and .38 Special on her own.
I purchased one of the Aussie 3" Model 10's for my 3" K frame collection, and when it arrived she said "That's mine!" Now its her house gun, and I get to shoot it occasionally.
When our 940 showed up, she almost claimed that one, but I told her it had more recoil than the Model 10 and was harder to shoot. She said "OK, I guess you can keep that one."

Hitting an assailant with a .22LR bullet out of a pistol in a self defense situation virtually guarantees that individual will need some kind of medical services, even if it is only a bandaid. Of course you may need the services of a mortician because your peashooter stopped nothing. Of course most by far will never need to use their pistol in a self defense situation, so a cork gun might serve just as well as a .22.

While I have 2 4inch 34s in the safe........ if I'm looking for something smaller than my 3" 66 K frame for a walk in the woods....... it's always my 3" 60-10 w/ .38s and 1-2 speedloaders....... and maybe a single speedloader of .357s.
I thought I'd use a 34 a lot; but seems not so much.........they seem to only come out to accompany a centerfire rifle.

Once upon a time while I was a student in seminary I worked in a shipyard as unarmed security. One night I got shot at when I blundered up on some folks who were apparently doing a deal of some sort, dope, whatever. Later that week I bought a Ruger Mk. II which I proceeded to carry in my pocket at night. It was what I could afford. I got to where I could shoot seagulls out of the air when they flew near me at night. I'd hold the flashlight with one hand and shoot with the other hand. It worked. I figured if or when the need arose to engage a criminal, hits would come easier than on seagulls.
Nowadays my circumstances are much improved over those student days. I have several very nice revolvers and a couple of 1911's from which to choose for SD/CC. I've been considering if I need to buy a gun for cc. With that in mind, I've been looking at what's available. I've been thinking... it'll probably be a .380 or maybe a 9mm. That having been said, I've been thinking... S&W has some nice little .22 LR revolvers. I shoot revolvers fairly well. I could afford to practice with a .22 revolver. And, it's something my wife and daughters would actually shoot. There's something to be said for a gun that folks will actually shoot. JMHO. Sincerely. brucev.

EDC no, however a SR22 loaded with 40 gr CCI Velocitors could ruin an otherwise good day for a varmint - better than a pointy stick.
Best.

Boy I'd hate to come a time when looking down the sights at something I didn't want to be there, hear a bang, and know its a .22lr that was dispatched. Yes, more effective than many non-gun options, yes, when sent in triplicate or more they can surely demotivate! But still, it's severely lacking in the fast acting. I'm fine with .32h&r or .380acp but get a little squirrelly feeling about the little twenty two. Y'all think the BG is just gonna run and leave a blood trail for someone to track? Sorry, I get the rational I think, but can't get comfy with the idea.

Don't usually, but have occasionally.
6-8 CCI Stingers in the face should give most goblins something else to do, rather than threaten me.

Certain amount of mall ninja stuff here. I sense some generation gap issues too. Does a .22 equate to minimal clothing?
