Default crack in frame on model 317-1

just went to clean my 317-1, serial number CCM7---, .22 LR, there is a half inch crack on the bottom of the ring on the frame where the barrel meets the forcing cone...didn't buy it new, wasn't there when i purchased from private party two years ago, have only used factory remington, federal and winchester ammo...
questions:
any idea what could have caused?
common problem with this model, or unheard of?
best to contact s&w via phone or email?
thanks...
have pix, but don't know how to add to this post, am rookie at forum stuff...

A known problem with certain models, caused by over-torqueing the barrel into the frame. Likely covered by factory warranty, contact S&W.

Technically the warranty only goes to the original owner, but sometimes the CS people don't ask.

Don't ask, Don't tell. Or do like most of our politicians...just lie like a dog!
