9mm Revolver w/Barrel 4" Long (or longer)???
I want a 9mm revolver. Why? Well, why not. Plus I have a bunch of 9mm ammo and would rather shoot it out of a revolver. My problem is that all the 9mm Revos I know of have short barrels and I usually shoot +P ammo.
What are my choices? The S&W 940 and 547 are very nice buy very pricey these days and.....have short barrels. The new S&w revolver seems aimed at competition not practical carry. What else is out there? The old Ruger Speed Six....short barrel and pricey. The new Charter Arms Pitbull....short barrel.
I need that 4+" barrel for adequate powder burn. What choices am I overlooking?

Making one yourself.
I have a Smith and Wesson 627 Pinto that I acquired a second cylinder for. Mark at Pinacle re-chambered it to 9x23 for me.
Now I have a convertible that shoots 38/357 with it's stock stainless unfluted cylinder or will shoot most everything from 9x17 through 9x23 with the alternate cylinder (black fluted)
Why not find yourself a nice 4" 586/686 in 6 or 7 shot and have it re-chambered? If you go 7 shot it will even use the same moonclips as the current production 986 revolver so clip availability will be no problem
The cost will probably be about the same as buying a clean 4" 547 and you will have the revolver style you want

I think the obvious answer here is the new S&W 929PC - 8 shot 9mm w/moonclips and a 6.5" barrel. You could have someone cut it down an inch or two if need be.

As much as I am in love with the new 929 I can't see buying one due entirely to the length of the barrel. I'm going to wait and save my nickels and hope a 4-5 inch version comes out.
In the mean time I'll probably get some variation of a 327/627 and start looking for chances to compete locally.
ETA: I think a 929 (or whatever) V-comp would be awesome!

I also am looking to find a 9mm Rev. I would be happiest with a 547 but would consider other DA guns. I prefer a 4'' barrel but would take shorter. It looks like it will have to be a older gun I get as the new ones come with equipment that does not interest me. (It’s not a cost issue; I do not want a locker)

There you go. I thought they were making one smaller than the 929, just couldn't remember for sure, haven't been keeping up with the new stuff.

Thank you for all of your sugestions. Re-cylindering sounds like a good possibility, perhaps a Security Six would be a better candidate for that.

Thanks for sharing the photo. I have occasionally seen the 2 3/4" 9mm but was not aware of a 4". Dagnabbit, that would be too collectible to carry and shoot but would be a perfect carry gun in that configuration.

You're correct, that was my 3" (up past my bed time).
Here's the 4" I had.

I was over on the Ruger Forum probably a week ago in the for sale section. I remember seeing a 9mm revolver listed. Security Six/Speed Six version. It may have been several pages deep. Can't remember the barrel length. It did not seem to be way out of line on the price, as I remember.
The SP101 also came in 9mm. I had one years ago in a 2.25 It also came in a 3.06 barrel length. For a concealed carry 9mm Revolver, myself I would probably give the SP101 a hard look.

Dang, that is exactly what I would like to find, a "Model 10" chambered for 9mm. Perfect, probably unreachable these days.

If I were going to do it, and had the money to annoy myself with the work, I would try to contact Pinnacle or one of the other places that does such rechambering. I'd try to start with a round butt, heavy barrel M10,13,64, or 65 (much as I prefer adjustable sights for my eyes), and see what they can do with it. (There are some with 4" barrels, but I would go with a 3" if necessary to keep the round butt, as I am assuming that this is a personal defense carry gun.) One thing I don't know is if there are 6 round K frame moonclips for 9mm, which could be a fatal blow.
It would be easier, I suspect, to convert a 7 shot L frame because of the moon clip issue, but I HATE HATE HATE that damnable full lug barrel, and it would be pretty heavy and bulky for most carry purposes.
To be objective, the chopped Glock 17 (aka 19L, a 17 with the grip cut to 19 size, done by Don Ellis), or a "26L" (19 chopped to 26 grip frame size) is a lot more useful and flexible. It might even be cheaper. I have started going IWB again since I lost a bit of weight. I had to buy a new holster, and went with a Nehemiah by Dale Fricke for my 19L. I have been impressed.

Shooting 9mm luger/parabellium ammo I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings but I'd use my Swedish m40 lathi pistol.

Okay but that's not FAIR!
The 9x23 is...is....NOT FAIR! (because I don't have one!)
Great idea though!

Here's what I am up against:
A lad posted a 547 3" on calguns.net (California-centric forum and sales site). for $1700.
Another lad posted an old looking Security Six for $675.
I think I will just buy a nice semi-auto and call it a day. Of course, that cannot be an S&W semi-auto but what the heck.

I have a convertible Blackhawk 357/9mm and like it. They won't set you back a arm and leg. They can purchased use for around $375 even in California. Good luck and here is a picture of mine.

$1,700 for a 3" 547 is way out of line. You can find near new in box examples for less than that(Maybe not in Kali though)

I believe that in addition to the N-frame Model 929 S&W also announced an L-framed version of a 9mm revolver which has a barrel shorter than 6+ inches.

I didn't pay anywhere near 1700 for my 4" 547. I paid more than I would have liked, but $1700 is not happening.

S&W agrees with you, Doug M.
I have a feeling I'm going to break my no more buying guns retirement pledge with either the 929 or 986. I'll have to hold them to make up my mind as to which one to get..

I always thought a 9mm revolver would be great, if the frame and cylinder were reduced to suit the 9mm COAL as opposed to the 38/357 length. That would make a nice short BUG.
