If they were easier to get, that'd be my gun. I don't blame you for hitting the buy-now, I've passed up on guns that I've regretted cheaping out on in the past. Hope you enjoy it!

Here is my -4. Bought it new in 1999. Replaced the front blade sight with one I bought from Smith & Wesson with orange ramp. Also had a trigger job done the same year. Gunsmith had me sign a form releasing him from responsibility.

i have a square butt 686 that one day will get a mountain gun barrel installed and converted to 7 shots by the factory. That would be my ideal perfect packing gun. 7 shots, stainless, tapered barrel sq butt and 686 so i can shoot the hot fast small bullets up to the big 180s

THAT WILL BE A SWEET CUSTOM, El Toro. WHAT BARREL LENGTH, AND DASH, IS YOUR ORIGINAL REVOLVER ? ? ? I PRESUME, PERHAPS ERRONEOUSLY, THAT YOUR 686 IS A NO DASH. HOW ABOUT POSTING A PIC--YOU KNOW HOW WE ALL LOVE GUN PORN......

I AM FASCINATED BY THE ACTUAL SQUARE BUTT K/L/N FRAME GUNS. I CONVERT ALL OF MY RB GUNS (OTHER THAN SNUBBY CARRY WEAPONS) TO SB GRIBS, USING AHRENDS TACTICAL CONVERSIONS......

BELOW ARE MY 3 MOUNTAIN GUNS. FROM L TO R, THEY ARE THE L FRAME 686+, AND 2 N FRAMES -- A 629 IN .44 MAGNUM, AND A 625 IN .45 COLT (ALSO IN THE SINGLE PIC)--ALL WEARING AHRENDS.....

I love it when old threads pop back up and they're still interesting! I agree with most that the 686+ Mountain Gun was one of the best offerings by S&W.

Here's my story - 1998 was a rough year for me on several fronts. This particular day, My wife (at the time) and I were fighting about something long forgotten. I went for a drive to just clear my head and ended up in a gun store that I typically didn't frequent. Weissers in National City in case anyone has been there.

I don't remember if I went there to buy anything or just wander, but somehow the salesman ended up showing this. It was far from what my gun interests were at the time, but it went home with me anyway. Total cost out the door, after my 10 day cooling off period of course, was $499. Sales tax and the DROS fee were around $50, so the gun was $449.

Over the years I really came to enjoy it. It's been carried some, shot a bit and shows a little wear here and there. I still have the box, all the papers and even the goofy "Massachusetts warning that guns cause suicides" paper slip that came with it.

Kernel - if you're still reading this thread years later and want more info from box labels, here you go:

With the limited number over the years, it'd be kind of cool to put together a list of serial numbers, who's got the one before and after and even where they were purchased from across the U.S. - a map with pins in it would be cool. Mine started in San Diego and is now in Anchorage.

Anyone have the ability or is up to collecting the info??

I LOVE THE OLD THREADS THAT ARE STILL RELEVANT. YOURS IS AN INTERESTING STORY, INSPCALAHAN.......

MY LOVE AFFAIR WITH S&W REVOLVERS, AND MOUNTAIN GUNS BEGAN, WHEN I WANDERED INTO A LGS, THAT I RARELY FREQUENTED, AND SAW A VERY CLEAN, STAINLESS, 4" S&W REVOLVER UP ON THE WALL. UP UNTIL THAT POINT IN TIME, I HAD OWNED ONLY BLUED COLT DIAMONDBACKS AND PYTHON REVOLVERS......

THE DURABILITY OF A STAINLESS GUN IS REALLY WHAT ATTRACTED ME, AS I WAS LOOKING FOR A GUN THAT I COULD TAKE INTO THE WOODS, AND ON CAMPING / FISHING TRIPS......

THE GUN TURNED OUT TO BE A 686+ MOUNTAIN GUN. NONE OF THE NOMENCLATURE MEANT ANYTHING TO ME. UPON HANDLING IT, I DECIDED THAT IT WAS JUST WHAT I NEEDED. A COUPLE OF YEARS LATER, I FOUND A 625 MG, IN .45 COLT, IN A GUN SHOP, DOWN IN FLORIDA, THAT NEEDED A NEW HOME. I STARTED TO REALLY LIKE THE MG CONFIGURATION, FOR ITS VERSATILITY OF PURPOSE--RIGHT AT HOME IN ANY ROLE......

BY THEN, I WAS HOOKED ON S&W REVOLVERS, AND I HAD PURCHASED 2 MODEL 629s---A 3" AND AN 8 3/8" VERSION. I THOUGHT THAT I REALLY "NEEDED" A 62 9 MG, IN .44 MAGNUM. I PURCHASED A BRAND NEW ONE WITH BOX AND PAPERS, AT A LGS. AFTER ABOUT A MONTH, I SOLD IT AT A LOSS. I JUST COULD NOT WARM UP TO THE IL. I PURCHASED A USED PRE LOCK 629 MG, FROM GB, AND PAID MORE THAN THE NEW ONE COST ME. AT LEST, IMHO, IT WAS A REAL MG, THAT I COULD BE PROUD OF........

I LOOKED IN VAIN FOR A 625 MG IN .45 ACP. I KNOW THAT THEY DO EXIST, BUT I HAVE NEVER SEEN ONE. I ENDED UP PURCHASING A SCARCE 4" MODEL OF 1989, ON GB, SPENDING CLOSE TO $1500. WHEN ALL WAS SAID AND DONE. I DO NOT REGRET THAT PURCHASE ONE BIT ! ! ! IT HAS THE NICEST TRIGGER, OUT OF THE BOX, AND IS THE MOST ACCURATE, OF ALL OF MY S&W REVOLVERS......

I WAS NEVER A FAN OF THE .41 MAGNUM CALIBER, SO I NEVER FELT THE "NEED" FOR SUCH A MG......

MY MG COLLECTION STANDS AT 3, PICTURED BELOW. ALSO BELOW AE MY TWO 629s. THEY WEAR PRE-BAN, SAMBAR STAGS BY EAGLE GRIPS. THE MOUNTAIN GUNS WEAR AHRENDS, TACTICAL CONVERSION GRIPS......

AS YOU MUST HAVE GUESSED, I HAVE AN AVERSION TO MODERN S&W GOODYEARS.......
