Default 686-5 Mountain Gun

I'm a big fan of the Mountain Guns. I got my first one, a LNIB pre-lock 629-4 a few weeks ago. Since then I have been looking for a 686 Mountain Gun. Today I won an auction for a LNIB 686-5 Mountain Gun. My understanding is that these are pretty scarce. I know it was only the third one I've seen on Gunbroker ever. The last one that I saw was a few months ago and it was the Lipsey's Exclusive and not a seven shot like the one that I purchased. When I get it I will post some pics but in the meantime I was curious to see any pics anyone has of theirs. Also I was wondering how many of these were made and if there is any preference beween the seven shot models and the second run made for Lipsey's.

At the risk of being judged and told how much I overpayed...I wanted it bad enough to give $1450 which was the Buy Now price. I understand that this is probably three times the original retail but the bottom line was that I wanted bad enough that I really didn't care. The seller had another one that was NIB just like the one I purchased and as soon as I clicked "Buy Now" the other one instantly sold for the "Buy Now" of the same price I paid for the piece I won. I don't buy guns to sell them later, so I know that however much I "overpayed" will eventually be irrelevant. Nice pics 5Wire...so why did you let her go?

I can't say anything about what you paid because I do the same thing as you did. You look for a long time and finally you see it the price (within reason) doesn't matter.

gdodgen. IMHO, YOU DID THE RIGHT THING. YOU WILL BE ENJOYING YOUR GUN, WHILE THE BARGAIN HUNTERS ARE STILL SEARCHING FOR ONE THEY CAN STEAL. I HAVE PAID TOO MUCH FOR A FEW GUNS IN MY TIME--LIKE IN THE SCENARIO eegalsc DESCRIBES. I HAVE NEVER REGRETTED THESE PURCHASES. THESE GUNS HAVE TURNED OUT TO BE MY FAVORITE REVOLVERS………….

Wow. I would not have expected that level, but can't say I am all that shocked. It is a great platform for a lot of purposes. I have one and much as I would hate to, it is likely the first of my firearms I would sell. I doubt it is worth that much, though.

Thanks. I had it almost nine years and I wasn't carrying or shooting it and I was jonesing for something else. I'm more or less attracted to snubbies and unusual pistol actions.

Here's my track on the gun. They don't come up for sale very often, as you mentioned. The Average Price Trend was pushing $1,000 as of March 2014, so although you paid top dollar, you won't lose anything on it if you keep it for a few years and decide to sell it. (Your price is included in the average but not in the chart. It might lift the trend a little.)

Congratulations! I'm looking forward to your photos.

If I recall correctly, there were about 1,500 686+ Mountain Guns produced. Not a lot. Below is mine. It has less than 300 rounds through it and is really a pleasure to shoot. The out-of-the-box trigger is one of the smoothest I've ever felt and the gun is much more accurate than I am. The angle of this photo makes the caliber inscription on the barrel difficult to see. Great guns. Wish I had one in 45 Colt. Enjoy yours.

Jerry

The 686 is an great revolver, well respected by all S&W aficionados, and the -5 Mountain Gun is one of the best of the best.

Next you'll have to look for a M625 MG in .45 Colt. Then you'll have a trifecta.

When you do post pics of you M686 please post one of the end label. My hobby's a little less expensive. I like to collect the info on the labels. I've got about 1,000 and so far I've spent $0.

Default Nice Mountain Gun!

I wish I had a 686 MG. The half lug barrel looks much better to my eye than the standard full lug on a 686. The four figure price is a little steep for me though.

You should get one in 45... either Colt or ACP. I love mine! The 45 Colt is on the left and the ACP is on the right.

OK, not being very bright, I have to ask: Other than the "Mountain Gun" etching on the barrel what's the difference between it and a regular 686? OK, I get the half lug but is there any other difference?

don't get me wrong I like it and think it's a great looking revolver. Just wonder what the difference is to command such a price.

Thanks,
Bob

However, the barrel tapering turns the front sight into that shark fin look I personally avoid, at east in double actions.

I inherited one of these and a matching 686-5P from my brother. I also received a 629-2 Mt Gun. I don't shoot them too often, but they are a pleasure to shoot. Now for the bad news. my brother was anal about boxes and receipts. I looked and he paid $424.00 in Oct of 1998. ENJOY. I know I do!

Look where the barrel meets the frame and you can see that it tapers down, mountain guns have the thinner tapered barrel with no underlug. This makes them lighter, for carrying in the mountains I guess.

Heck, if anyone wants mine, send me an email and I'll cough up some crummy cell phone pics. I prefer FTF in WA.

As mentioned, Mountain Guns have a tapered barrel, plus a black powder chamfer on the cylinder, and a black, ramp front sight. They also have smooth triggers that I think may be slightly wider than standard at the time they were introduced. The net effect is that you save a few ounces. Plus, the tapered barrel gives a look that many on this Forum like.

Mine was purchased with a red post on patridge front sight. I am the second owner so I don't know if it was ordered like that or changed.
One thing I do know is that the CHEAP CHEEZY etched lettering on both my 686 & 629 mtn guns has worn off. They are "nameless" now. OK though I'll keep "em" and enjoy "em".

686+ MG, SS L frame , 1998 ltd ed stocking dealer special,
Product code 104200 , 7 shot pre IL, fluted cylinder,
Hogue rubber grips, RB frame, tapered barrel with shrouded ejector rod (half lug),
.375 semi target hammer, .312 smooth combat trigger, internal firing pin, MIM hammer trigger,
(new round rear site) drilled & tapped for scope,
Black ramp FS laser etched trademarks.
On a side note the L frame 7 shot 686 MG weighs 35.5 oz compared to the 6 shot 4" K frame Model 66 that weighs 36 oz.

Not all MG's have the chamfered cylinder including the 686-5,

Did S&W make a pre lock 6 shot 686 MG ?
I have seen a 6 shot 686 MG but it was an IL gun,

Shown below for size comparison with 629-2 MG (top) and nickel 19-4 (bottom)

I personally like the looks of Mountain Guns...they remind me of the lines of a Model 27. I've only got one...a 625-7 in .45 Colt. It is easy to carry and a pleasure to shoot.

Yes, I think they did. I have three M686-5 MG's in my s/n collection that I did not desinate as 7-shots. I have one that is a 7-shot. It's possible I missed it when collecting the info, but I don't think I would of missed it on all three. They all have the same product code as yours.

To buy the MG you need a whole "mountain" of money. A plain M686 will cost ya just a small butte.

If you have pics also the 7 shot 686+ will have cylinder stop notches that line up with the cylinder flutes.

I'll have to remember to look for that. Do the 8-shot N-frames line up the same way?

I dont have an 8 shot N frame 357 but a quick check on the net indicates the 8 shot notches do not line up with the flutes,
Kinda makes sense considering the 7 shot shifted the notches in line with the flutes that an 8 shot shifts it over again,
BTW having the notches align with the flutes is supposedly more robust as the stop notch is not cut right above the chamber.

Since a N-frame cylinder is larger, I thought "maybe".

I got my 686+-5 straight from S&W to my front door. It cost me $300.00 new. I sent them my 586 with an AAAxxx serial # for a warranty repair and it could not be fixed. They offered the Mtn. gun as a replacement for an extra $300. They were new then and they asked me if I wanted 6 or 7 shot. Having been unaware of the 7 shot, I took it. So yes, at least a few 6 shot Mt. Guns were made. They only made like less than 2000 before starting to put the locks on them. I had the black front sight on mine, but it has a 24K gold bead now. My 686+-5 weight is 36 oz. with Jordan trooper grips, and my 686-1, 6 shot is 40 oz. with Coke bottle grips. The trooper grips are heavier so a Mt Gun is 4.5 oz. lighter. Bit the balance is much better than the full lug. And I get a stronger gun with lighter weight than a Model 66. This is a NEVER SELL GUN.
Here is a bit of trivia, when I got my 586 in 1981 they were new and there were no speedloaders for them. Had to have for duty use, and found speedloaders for Colt Python were perfect, and still in use today.

Thanks to everyone for all the replies and pics. I can't wait to see mine when I pick it up. Lots of good info here for sure! Nawilson, I think you are right, I do need a .45 Mountain Gun. I had been looking at a few on GB, but when the 686 Mountain Gun came up, it took priority. What's interesting is when I got the Smith and Wesson revolver bug, the only Smith and Wesson I owned was a beat up J frame I took in a trade deal. I have since bought five N frames, a K frame, and an X frame. I was planning on buying an L frame next, but was just planning to buy a good used 686 or 686 plus. Never thought that the 686 Mountain Gun would be my first L frame! So I'm pretty excited about it. 5wire, that chart tracking the prices of 686 Mountain Guns is very interesting, thanks for sharing. On the topic of overpaying for guns we want, I have to say that all my other Smith and Wesson revolver deals were pretty lopsided in my favor. I usually am watching about thirty different guns on GB and always do quite a bit of research before I buy. So if I over payed on this one I still feel like overall I have come out ahead. As soon as I pick the gun up I will get some pics posted.

No mention of a six shooter version. I never heard of one. There was a six-shot, 4-inch 686. I owned one but it had a full underlug.

You will love that Mountain gun and your right its easier when you add them all up and divide to cost average,
In time the pre lock 686 MG will exceed what you paid thus the expression "We never pay to much for a gun just sometimes pay it too soon".

Also comparing 5,6,7,8 shot cylinders the size of the cylinder doesnt matter it is the number of cylinder chamber holes ,
with an even number the opposite cylinder aligns directly under the one in battery and thats where the bolt catches the notch.
An odd number like the 5 shot J frames and L frame 7 aligns with a flute at the bottom every time .

When you think about it cutting a stop notch directly above the cylinder chamber probably makes it the weakest point.

Oops, I forgot about the reissue of the MG, so yup. there's a six shot version with the internal lock made long after the original 1998 seven-shot version. Got it

As usual, Kernel Crittenden hits the nail on the head.

In my opinion, the 7-shot, 686 Mountain Gun is the finest S&W revolver built in recent time. It weighs about the same as the 6 shot Model 19/66, can handle .357 full time or 38 Specials forever, is round butt, which allows the flexibility of concealed carry or the use of a square butt conversion grip, and it is stainless. What else do you need? The 7-shot 686 Mountain Gun should be a regular catalog offering.

Back when the L frame was introduced, due to longevity issues with the K frame and Magnum loads, I had hoped they would simply offer full-lug AND standard ejector shroud versions since it was apparent the K frame in Magnum was going away. Unfortunately, the factory did not take that simple step. I wish they would now, and I much prefer the Model 27 style of tapered barrel as is on the Mountain Gun.

The easy way to remember is that odd numbers of charge holes place the stop notches in between the charge holes, where the steel is thickest, and even numbers place the stop notch directly over the thinnest part of the charge hole.

A Model 686 and 586 with a half lug barrel is also on my wish list,
Incidentally while the MG has a tapered barrel with a narrow rib the Model 19/66 has the wide rib heavy barrel profile like the Model 29/629.

A while back a fellow member (sorry lost his ID) posted this picture showing his 686 with a 586 that has had the full underlug cut back to a half lug and refinished...Made quite an impression as it has the strength of the L frame with the looks of the K Magnum.

I recall that string too, and that is a much better looking revolver than the factory 586/686. I really dislike the full lug barrels; they are ugly and really trash the balance as far as I am concerned. From a practical analysis, I can't justify my 686MG. It really does not do anything for me that my 66 doesn't, and most of my other revolvers are 4" N frames that can use the same leather.

Finally got a chance to take some pics of the new 686 Mountain Gun. I was very pleased with its condition when I picked it up from my FFL.

Congrats on your purchase and the fact that you are pleased with the condition. Seems like a bunch of money to pay but you have what you want. I've waited for 18 years to find a gun and the price I was willing to pay, and I've peeled out the hundred dollar bills for the "I gotta have it now" guns. I'm sure most here will congratulate you and agree that happiness is only your next away!!

SMART MOVE ! ! ! WHILE OTHERS WILL DICK AROUND, LAMENTING HOW MUCH THESE REVOLVERS ARE SELLING FOR, YOU WILL BE ENJOYING YOURS. YOURS IS SURE TO APPRECIATE BEYOND WHAT YOU PAID FOR IT.
I TOO AM A FAN OF THE MOUNTAIN GUNS. I OWN THREE--A 686, A 629, AND A 625 IN .45COLT. I SEARCHED FOR ONE IN .45ACP, BUT TO NO AVAIL. I FINALLY PURCHASED A MODEL OF 1899 IN .45ACP. THIS IS ARGUABLY MY BEST REVOLVER AS FAR AS TRIGGER PULL AND ACCURACY, SO I STOPPED LOOKING FOR A MG IN THAT CALIBER. SINCE THEN, I HAVE SEEN SEVERAL FOR SALE--OF COURSE ! ! ! IN ANY EVENT, HERE ARE MY THREE. L==>R THE 686, 629, AND 625. TE SINGLE PIC IS THE 625. THE GRIPS ARE AHRENDS SMOOTH TACTICAL CONVErSIONS, IN OIL FINISHED MORADILLO………...

One Eye Joe, that's a nice trio! I'm currently in the hunt for a Mountain Gun in 45 LC and it will be my third MG as well as my first 45 LC chambered revolver. I was watching one on GB last week and got sidetracked when I found a ANIB 627-5 with the standard four inch barrel and just couldn't pass it up...pics coming soon of that. Anyway, it seems like there a lot Mountain Guns coming up for sale lately and there are still quite a few pre-locks in great condition available if one is patient.

I like all the mountain guns but have only one at this time. It is my favorite of any version..................625-6 .45 Colt. The .45 Colt and the .45-70 seem like Gods' own rounds............you can shoot rabbit loads to bear stompers in either one with the correct platform.

THANKS FOR THE KIND WORDS gdodgen. THE PRE LOCKS COME AROUND IF ONE IS PATIENT. I WAS EAGER TO ACQUIRE A 629, AND EVENTUALLY WON ONE ON GUN BROKER. NO SOONER DID THE SMOKE CLEAR, WHEN A PRELOCK CAME UP FOR SALE. I BID ON THAT ONE, PAYING MORE THAN THE FIRST ONE. AS SOON AS I GOT IT I SOLD THE ONE WTH THE LOCK. THE .45COLT IS A WONDERFUL CARTRIDGE, AND I REALLY ENJOY SHOOTING THAT MG. VERY ACCURATE AND EASILY CONTROLLED. ACTUALLY, I ENJOY THEM ALL. GOOD LUCK IN YOUR HUNT…….

Kernel, here is the picture of the box label as you requested. Sorry it took so long...and sorry it's upside down. I posted it four times trying to get it right and even rotated the pic and re saved it in my photo library, and it still posted upside down...

I bought my Model 686-5 Mountain Gun in October, 1998. $432.85 minus a $25 rebate from S&W that the dealer gave me right then. I also am blessed with two Model 625-6's (one Colt, one ACP) and a Model 629-4. I love the Mountain Gun format.

The fellow who sold me the .45 ACP really ticked me off. He sold it to me as "unfired after leaving the factory" but the gun arrived filthy. He put a note in the box that said, basically, "I had to shoot it before sending it to you. Neener neener neener!" He went into my "jerk" file.
