Default S&W 500. Alliant 300-mp powder

Powder is real hard to find these days where I live. I found a bottle of Alliant 300-mp in a one lb container. I have a question regarding loads for the 50 cal magnum. If anyone has tried h110 or lil'gun I have some load data for the 325 and 500 gr. Horniday ftx.

Has anyone tried 300-mp in either of those two bullets? I am using only starline brass. Also, are there any powder loads not listed in the Hornady handbook which will work?

Thanks for your help.
Dave

I have not used 300-MP personally
Alliant web site list load data with 350 grain Speer UCSP
Fed 215 primer, OAL 2.25" 49 grain (max) 300-MP

Alliant Powder - Reloader's Guide

I have used H110, N110, 2400, A9, Lil"gun, IMR4227, N120, and W296, load data out of the Hornady Manual.

Additionally I have used IMR Trail Boss and several other IMR powders as described on John Ross's web site.

I dont see that brass headstamp makes any difference. Starline , Hornady and Winchester brass I measured all had the the same volume I measured, around 63 grains of water if memory serves.

All the brass I have is for Large rifle primers not the original large pistol primer brass and is marked accordingly.

Good luck and be safe

I have used 300-mp extensively with the .500 S&W. 49.0 grains under a 325 gr. Speer as well as a 350 gr Sierra work quite nicely. I have never tried a 500 gr hornady as i have not been able to get them but I worked up a charge of 46 grains under a 400 gr Sierra. One thing I have found with 300-mp.... It works much better with a magnum rifle primer. With a regular rifle primer I was getting a lot of unburnt powder. If it were me I would try that 500 grain with a starting load of 40 grains.

My local dealer had several pounds on the shelf that was not selling at all last year. Most of the Magnum reloaders around my area are stuck on 2400, H110, and 296 being the ONLY Magnum handgun powders. Last year after deer season I started rounding it all up to supplement my H110 and AA#9 powders. Per what I have read it should be as good as it gets for a Magnum handgun. I believe I have a copy of Handloader with quite a bit of reloading data for it somewhere. The article showed it getting more velocity than anything else in the calibers listed.
I am loading for both a 44 Magnum, and a 480 Ruger Super Redhawk using heavy cast bullets. Both with 9.5 Inch barrels. I am expecting very good things out of this powder.
