586 no dash - unpleasant surprise
I recently bought a nice 586 no dash from an online auction site. It came with Hogue rubber grips installed. No box. Pictures and information indicated a very nice revolver, and it is - with one exception. I removed the rubber grips to find (to my horror) a small rust spot with a bit of pitting. See picture.
With S&W factory stocks installed the spot is visible just above the stocks.
Live and learn. Always check under the grips or have them send pictures with the grips removed.
So with this in mind, how would this spot affect the value? Is it worthy of the factory stocks even with the blemish showing? Is there anything I can do to fix the blemish without making it look worse? Thanks for the input.

I use a Birchwood Casey Presto blue pen for stuff like that. It's like a felt tip pen. It won't make it look like new, but it could get rid of the shine and make it less noticeable. I don't know of a way to make it like new again. If you get bluing on the blued part of the gun, you can usually polish it away with really fine steel wool (rub lightly and quickly). Works for me anyway.
I hate when this happens to me. I've had several guns this year that have shown up with small undisclosed scratches, etc. Some sellers have rebated a little money, others wouldn't. I'd much rather have the perfect gun that I thought I was getting than some cash back.

I think that it is still worthy of the wooden factory stocks. It is a spot but overall, I don't think that it will detract too much for value or desirability unless you need to an absolutely pristine model. I would just use it, shoot it and enjoy it. They are great revolvers.

Kind of what I'm thinking. I was disappointed initially but i never intended it to be a collector gun, even though I was wanting a gun that was close to that level. Would I have bought it if I had known it was there? Maybe not. But at my price point I probably would have ended up finding another that, in the end, would have had a bad place on it as well.

Just fit a new side plate if it bothers you that much.
If it was mine I'd touch it up with a blue pen and forget about it.

I agree on touching it up.
It will probably disappear enough for you to forget it's there.

There is slight pitting, a bit beyond surface rust. Will the rust come back under the blue pen touch up?

Oh heavens! Get me to my fainting couch while I clutch my pearls.
If it had the original grips and box and were presented as pristine it might be something to grouse about. On a used gun, aftermarket grips, no box - pffft. So what. Darken the spot with a Sharpie and enjoy it as a shooter.

Keep it protected with oil and it shouldn't.

The pits will always be there but you can control future corrosion by keeping oil on it. I think the wood stocks look fine and after you shoot it, you will forget about it.

After you find out how good it shoots, you won't even think about that blemish.
Dang 03fatboy beat me to it.

Next time get a 686
Seriously I wouldn't worry about a cosmetic blem on a probably 30 year old blued gun. Now you have an excuse to shoot and carry it.

As for the wood grips... IMHO you owe it to yourself to try the gun with a pair of the smooth combat grips that were also available with/for that gun during the period. I eventually end up trying to put them on all the K's and L's I shoot a lot. Who knows, they may have a little higher edge and cover that pitted spot, but as others have said, a little touch-up blue (I like the felt tip pin type from Birchwood Casey™) and on a gun you shoot it will disappear in significance if not in fact.

FUNNY!!!! I hope you don't mind if I use that one about a thousand times! Fainting couch! Jees, I could use that line at work for all the AR types, AND in gun world, for all the AR types.
But, seriously, that is disappointing. Personally, I'd say a used gun is a used gun. Sometimes you win on the online stuff. Sometimes not.
I bought a 19-7 that has a spot like the one in question. I yanked the horrid-looking original Uncle Mikes rubber grips (do they make anything that ISN'T horrid looking?) and replaced with wooden round butts. Lo and behold, the new grips covered the spot. So, I won that one.

Rubber grips tend to trap oil and other moisture that rusts the metal under it. I discovered this the hard way, much like you did.

Last night I cleaned up the rust, then tried the blue pen and it helps. I think I will be happy with it. I'm too OCD when it comes to this sort if thing...will post a pic later.

Look on the bright side. The gun has an obvious flaw. So the pressure is off. Now when you put that inevitable little scratch or ding in it, it won't matter. You're freeeee! (To shoot the heck out of it).
