Finally located a brand new S&W M57 .41 Mag + Another Surprise
Well, it took a while but a brand-new "unspoken for" M57 .41 mag revolver came into my LGS. I have to say this revolver is of real work of art and a downright beauty. It didn't even make it out of the box to the display when I told the salesman to mark it as sold. For those who followed the previous thread of my purchase choice/search, you'll know I had a hard time finding this and even had one come in but was previously sold from a list which led me to the Talo 3" .44., So I'm thrilled to finally nail down a M57.
Now for the surprise, along with the Model 57, they also had come in with it a brand-new Model 25 .45LC. Talk about when it rains it pours, this really put a burden on my choice of should I stick with the .41 Magnum or go with the .45 Long Colt in which I already have firearms in that caliber such as my Uberti 1866 Yellowboy Lever action rifle that I simply cherish..
And since I am already in the process of setting up a reloading station on my workbench for the .41 Magnum, I knew I couldn't let the M57 get away, especially for the price he was giving me which is slightly lower than any prices I have seen on GunBroker. But adding to the difficulty of the choice, the salesman informed me that from what he has seen the model 25 is even more scarce getting out to dealers than the model 57.
So I made the only rational decision anyone could in such a predicament. I bought them both.
Pics will follow when I go back to take delivery of them. Now I have to get my boxes of 45LC from the safe I've been hanging onto for a while and get them ready for the range.

Sounds like the only logical choice you had was to buy both!
Looking forward to the pics.

That was the only viable choice.

Good choice! The .41 Magnum and .45 Colt are two of my favorite calibers. Yes, please post photographs!

I certainly will add the pics when I get all three latest revolver purchases home!
In the meantime, I thought I'd stack up side-by-side the three caliber acquisitions that will likely move up my favorites list:

No doubt if I left one unpurchased it would have been gone by the time I went back for it. That's been my luck and experience in the past. As the saying goes, strike while the iron is hot.

I have an unfired, New Old Stock 57, 4" and bought a black Delrin ILS plug for it. You might think about that too. I have since found a square butt, stainless 657 4" prelock, so this blued beauty will be sold as new, yet with the included but not installed ILS plug.
Yesterday I shot the 657 4" and noted that the 20.0 gr PowerPro 300-MP load with 210 gr in both lead and plated seemed more at home than it did in my Blackhawk 4 5/8. That is particularly true with the hotter lead load. I'd say you are going to love that gun, given the right grips..

Congrats on your 657 4"!! Sounds like you're going to be enjoying it for a long, long time! My hand was actually very comfortable with the stock grips, but we'll see how that turns out after some extended time at the range.

A man after my own heart! Sometimes, one must just do what needs to be done.... I would have done the same thing and suffered the consequences when I got home... Happened before, may happen again. I have had both of those revolvers. Sadly, they were sold off for something else that I just had to have. That was years ago and I still lament my youthful stupidity but who knew that we would see the situation we see now. Those kind of Smith and Wesson revolvers will NEVER be made again. That is very sad to say, but, it is the reality. In my opinion, you did very well and made a wise decision both financially and materially. Great revolvers in the very best of tradition.

Congratulations, nice find. What exactly does one have to do to get a box of ammo "ready for the range"?

1st off, nice guns.
If you had posted a poll before buying, 75% of people would have said buy both; the other 25% are just weird, or financially challenged. But it's easier to tell other people how to spend their money, than doing it themselves.
I have an M58, my favorite load for it is a 215 lead swc with 7.5 grains Unique. Conveinently, I also load some 45Colt (255lswc) and 44 Specials(240lswc) at the same time because the powder thrower is all set up.
Enjoy.

Thanks Aircrewman! We all have sold something off at one time or another in haste always regret it later on. So you're not alone I'm sure. If I could go back in time I would kept a few of the revolvers I sold off over the years. I think I have arrived at a point of sensibility to only seek out new acquisitions and not the thin that herd anymore. What I own is what I'll keep and if I can't afford the new acquisition without a trade, I'll just wait a little longer to save those extra nickels for that next gun. Anyhow, I am looking forward to these new acquisitions.
