Rear or front sight adjustment for 640 Night Sights?
I have the following 640 Pro that shoots about 2" left at 10 yards (Not just me, either, does it for other people).
I would like to adjust the sights a smidge to bring it in line. However, I am hesitant to start tapping on the night sights for fear of damaging the gas tubes.
I've not adjusted night sights before. What do you recommend for adjusting? Are these sights durable enough to withstand tapping with a brass punch, or is there a better way - perhaps a site pusher (I've not found one)?
Thanks

I think the sights are durable enough for tapping with a brass rod... but if it were me I'd opt for a sight pusher.

Well I went ahead and got the following sight pusher: Williams Ramp-Type Front Sight Pusher Aluminum Black
It worked. Managed to move the front sight a smidge and I'll go to the range tomorrow to do the final adjustment.

I suspect the recoil of firing a Magnum round from a "J" frame revolver puts far more impact on the front sight than gently tapping the sight base with a brass drift. I would rather gently tap the palm of my hand with said drift than fire the revolver with said Magnum round. And, yes, I have fired a Federal 125 gr JHP Magnum with my M640 Pro. I don't intend to do much of that. But the gun and sight are designed to "take it" with out too much complaint.
Best,
Rick

Pef, fortunately when I sent my new-in-the-box 640 Pro back to S&W to have them actually install the rear sight, they mounted it fairly straight. Mine shoots to point of aim-ish.
Although I'm more of a two dot guy (dot over dot), I thought the three dot night sights would be a good alternative. The 640 Pro sights are a much better option than standard J sights, but they could be tweaked slightly to make them better.
I would have designed the front tube bigger and/or a different color than the rear tubes. I also would have made the front white outline bigger than those on the rear (Ameriglo I-dot Pro example below). My 640's front dot appears slightly dimmer at night and smaller during the day. This tends to draw my eyes to the rear sights instead of the primary aiming aid... the front sight.
One could argue the standard 640 with a tritium front blade replacement might be a better sight option.
Let us know how the sight realignment worked on your 640...

Good news, bad news, good news:
Good news - It worked.
Bad News x2: 1) The pusher did make some marks on the barrel sight ramp and it did mar the front sight base. Fortunately you do not have to move the front sight very much to change the point of impact, given the short sight radius. If I had to do it again, I would let some oil weep into the front sight fixture (don't know if that would help, seems like it would) and place the frame in a vise (secured by fabric), and then use the pusher. I did not use the correct set up.
2) Shortly after correcting it the hammer pivot pin broke in the Pro, and Smith had to replace it. Bummer, as I was becoming attached to the gun.
Good news: The replacement gun they sent me was spot on.

Pef, Sorry to hear of the grief you are having to deal with...
Did you get another 640 Pro and if so, how is the fit & finish?

The new 640 Pro cleans up nice:
With my carry ammo it is dead on. Being the OCD person that I am, I noticed the trigger is "Canted" in that it is not exactly centered when it is pulled all the way back. (Good Lord, who would notice that??? What the heck is wrong with us gun nuts?)
But overall it's great. I put in a 13 pound rebound spring and polished the return sufaces on the star, which "speeds ups" the reset with the weaker spring.
Definitely a keeper!
